Default allergic

ok so about a year or two ago i had to have a wisdom tooth removed and before i had insurance i just asked to wait it out the 90 days for my new employer's insurance to kick in. so they put me on t3's for a couple weeks. after taking them i would itch like a mother fucker. so then i started taking them with benadryl to stop the allergic reaction. it worked.

so now about a couple months ago i came acrfoss the same pills and took them and blew into full allergic reaction. i mean i was crying i was itching so hard, my face was comepletely covered in hives as well as my arms and my head blew up about twice the size.

i asked a pharmiscist about this and he said soon enough i will be allergic to all opiates. he knows im an addict, he used to fill my bupe and now methadone. so i think he was trying to scare me.

anyway, what the fuck. how come i can take everything except codeine, arent they basically the same main chemical in codein as hydro, oxy, heroin or morphine, whatever?

No, its not the same as h-codone, o-codone, etc. Alot of people can not tolerate codeine, who can tolerate other opiates. The only one you may be weary of is morphine, as codeine is metabolized into M.
The codones are not codeine derived. Oxy is derived from thebaine. Im not sure about hydro, but Im pretty sure it is not derived from methylmorphine.
It sounds like the pharmacist is trying to scare you. What ou describe is fairly common (I have the same problem, but not to the same extent), and I have no problem taking any other opiate/oid. Anaphylaxis is possible, and it sounds like you have experienced this with the codeine, but just because you are sensitive to codeine doesnt mean you will be "doomed" as far as narcotics are concerned.
I just saw that hydro can be derived from codeine, but this still doesnt mean you are prone to a hydro allergy.

A lot of hospitals ask if you're specifically allergic to codeine when you check in. They don't mention other opiates, so I've always taken that to mean that lots of people must be allergic and that codeine must be different than other meds in how they affect your body.

Ein0606

dont sweat it...the pharmacist was full of shit

codeine gets metabolized into morphine, so IF you are allergic to any opiates, it would ONLY be codeine and morphine (and stuff derived from morphine;ketones like hydromorphone for example you MAY be allergic to, but then again sometimes the allergy is to JUST morphine and codeine) the rest have nothing to do with morphine, as they are derived from thebaine (oxycodone and hydrocodone, also oxymorphone) or are "made in a lab" like fentanyl, tramadol, meperidine, methadone, etc.

and the part about "soon u will be allergic to all opiates" is crap. there is no incubation period for allergic reactions. either you are allergic to a med or you are not.

dont listen to that fool; he's got it all wrong. On purpose probably...you know how antsy people get around methadone and stuff.

ignore it, it's all bull

well i figured he was bullshitting but i have no problems with morphine. i can shoot it all day long same with dilaudid.

i am allergic to phenergan too and when i was at the hospital the dr. told me that one day your body can handle something and the next day it cant. he said it was weird how allergies start but this had nothing to do with narcotics consiering i was like 14.

but anyway thanks for the input, ive been wondering about this since the last reaction and always had it the back of my head.....

cool, so if anything, you are allergic to codeine and only codeine.

Shit sucks anyway.

Hey Oxy, do you know if commercial hydrocodone production involves thebaine for the most part? I have a few sources that say dihydrocodeinine can be synthed from codeine, but this seems like an impractical means of production, considering the relative "uselessness" of thebaine alone. Also, could the "parent" substance a drug is derived from cause a different allergic reaction? For example, could hydro derived from codeine cause a more pronounced allergic rx in a codeine-allergic individual than a thebaine-derived hydro?

Sorry to jack the thread, just curious.

yeah in bulk like for pharm. companies and stuff, hydro is synthesized from thebaine...but to answer ur second question, nope, hydro is hydro no matter how it was made..its the bottom line that counts...hydrocodone is hydrocodone.

perfect example is with meth

you can make meth from reducing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, but the bottom line is still meth..

Thanks for the info. I guess I should know that, but for some reason I thought the parent may make a difference. But I guess molecule is a molecule, regardless of how it is produced.

Well, what you really want is a reduction to a highly distilled (crystallized) D-Meth, after all, there is D-Meth and L-Meth (i.e. Vicks inhalers). But I don't think anyone here cares much about that...

But anyways, since you've always seemed to be highly educated and informed in these departments...you say that Hydromorphone is derived from morphine? I had thought that Hydromorphone was a derivative of Hydrocodone (am I mistaken that an extremely small percentage of Hydrocodone is metabolized into Hydromorphone?)
