This whole thing about family acid being a different high is just down to higher doses IMO, lower doses of psychs, particularly LSD tend to have more negative unconscious material associated with them as the ego is still firmly in place. It is very doubtful that any LSD adulterants (from impure synthesis) would be active at the microgram level. There are very few drugs that are active at this level anyway.

Stanley Owsley's essays can be found here http://www.thebear.org/essays.html. Interesting stuff IMO. Used to see him from time to time in the early 90's at Grateful Dead shows. He would usually have a card table in the hall of a venue and be showing/sell his handmade belt buckles while talking his vegetarian rap. What a character.

His "family alchemy" dominated the part of the Dead scene I was involved w/from late '80's until Jerry passed.

I've definitely bought "family" acid from old hippies at Dead/Roger Waters shows in Mountain View but it was pretty good acid, nothing more.

The acid I usually get is out of control and is produced by small, local groups who are extremely tight-knit and have no connection to any larger organization as far as I know. My area seems to be absolutely swimming in cheap and strong acid so I'd imagine there is a pretty good number of groups like this operating around me. IIRC a huge bust of an organized group took place in the East Bay (Oakland/Berkeley/El Cerrito) earlier this year. Guys had the means to produce a shitton of LSD and MDMA.

Agreed, the DEA tried to pass some bullshit off like that before saying that "real" LSD doesn't exist any more. The reason feel it's different is because there are way less micrograms per hit these. In the 60s the average hit was roughly between 200 and 400mcg per dose, now-a-days it's in the 40 to 60 range. apparently though it's easier to flow with the trip when it's a larger dose... Aww... LSD, I wanna trip soon.

there are plenty of threads out there on other sites that explain very well how acid goes from crystal to paper/vials. how it used to be distributed even.....some are very very interesting reading. i could drop some links later if people are too lazy to google (not that theres anything wrong with that, right now i am too lazy to google them or i'd be dropping them

My cousin was in the 'rainbow family' and used to tell me some awesome stories about their gatherings, but i never had the chance to go.
LSD wasn't really my thing, but in HS, early college I did a bit - my first trip was the dead/Dylan back in 86 or 87...here in nyc we used to get strong acid in the late 80s/early 90s - blotters were $5, occasionally someone would have microdots, only saw liquid once. Enjoyed many summer afternoons tripping away in sheep meadow in central park. The doses were usually good quality, but when it wan't I hated the comedown and not being able to sleep for days.
About ten years ago acid seemed to dry up (the silo bust?, or maybe I just moved into different scenes), but shrooms were everywhere - even now are more popular than ever. A few years ago someone offered me a blotter in club- it was very weak, but i was on mdma at the time so it was hard to judge. Last summer several people were talking about some good blotters going around (white on white) and since then whenever I go to a big (underground) warehouse party or club there seem to be a good number of people tripping on lsd. It is still dirt cheap, maybe the economy has something to do with it becoming popular again?, or perhaps these things just go in cycles.
Anyone else notice it (re) gaining popularity? Is the quality increasing as well?
