Gray day, no dawn,
Everyone that's here, is gone
Except of course my Junkie son
Draw the black flag cross the moon
Burn the bottom of a thousand spoons
The Poppy frees us from the gloom
Star light, star bright
Heart pounding in my chest tonight
Vampires shrinking from the light
Oh, God whose image we are in
Christ, who frees us of our sins
Bless you for the Heroin
At first I thought a snake had got me, happened dreadful quick,
T'was a bullet bit my leg, right off I got sick.
Came to in a wagon filled with ten more wounded men,
Five were dead by the time we reached that bloody tent.
Gimme some of that Soldiers Joy, you know what I mean,
I don't want to hurt no more, my leg is turning green.
The doctor come and looked at me, this is what he said:
"Your dancing days are over , son, its a good thing you ain't dead."
He went to work with a carving knife, sweat fell from his brow
'bout killed me when he saved my life and cut that lead ball out.
Oh, gimme some of that Soldiers Joy, ain't ya got no more?
Hand me down my walking cane, I ain't cut out for war.
The red blood ran down my leg, ran right to the floor,
Run right down his apron strings, like a river out the door.
He handed me a bottle, said, "drink as deep as you can"
Then he turned away and turned right back with a hacksaw in his hand.
Gimme some of that Soldiers Joy, you know what I like
Bear down on that fiddle boys, just like Saturday night.
Gimme some of that Soldiers Joy, you know what I crave
I'll be hitting that Soldiers Joy, till I'm in my grave.
