    Default Missed Shot/Abscess

I havent seen anything on the forums about this in quite some time, so I figured I would share this since there are alot of new (and young) people here. After all, the purpose of this site is harm reduction, and you wouldnt not believe how many people I have heard giving others wrong information when it comes to this topic. After going to the clinic this morning, and hearing a COUNSELOR misinform someone, I knew it was time to bring it here.

For those of you who insist on IV'ing, I'm sure you know how dangerous it is, and that is why you take all of the preventative measures necissary, right? And thats also why you never cut corners, even if you are in a hurry, and if you dont have the proper 'tools', then you dont even consider it until you are properly equiped, right? Of course, thats what I thought.

Also, if you are persistent on IV'ing, practice your technique. This will reduce the chances that this will happen to you, greatly. Practice makes perfect. For those of you who do miss, however, apply a warm compress or somthing similar as soon as possible to the area.

If you start to notice redness, swelling, tenderness, or heat (the area will actually become hotter than the surronding areas), chances are that you have an abscess. (NOTE : IT USUALLY TAKES ATLEAST 24-48 HOURS FOR AN ABSCESS TO FORM). First, I would suggest that you seek medical attention immediatley, as chances are pretty good that you will have to get the abscess drained, and this is something that you definatley want a professional to handle. (Please, please no 'do-it-yourself' doctors...this isnt a joke guys...) However, in the meantime, apply an icepack, or cold compress, or something similiar. NOT HEAT. Heat will cause the infection to spread, and (if you've ever had one of these before, then you know what I'm talking about, if not, then just trust us) as painfull as an abscess can be, you want to confine it to as small of an area as possible to keep the pain and discomfort to a minimum.

    So lets review:

    Heat for missed shots
    Cold for abscess

Please do not confuse these. Especially if you are a health care professional...

    Class dismissed.

And an advice... if theres any way for you to open and litterally put the shit out of there, then do it... But only do that by aspirating movment not the other way around, thats because you dont wanna any of the shit going in to the vascular system... but hey, even when done at the ER they allways made the assumption that it goes into the vascular system and so they give you antibiotics just in case.

So you may add a rule:
    - If you have full spectrum antibiotics and are able to suck the shit/pus out of the absess then do it.. but do the least pressure and try aspiration.. When done clean with alchool then water with soap and then take some antibiotics for a week or so.. By the 2nd or 3rd day everything will be ok..

EDIT: At first "the shit" is just the liquid you inject, its as clear (colour) as that, but it will infect.. if you are able to open it and get it out do it..

    Thanks for that info.
Actually, you do want to use heat with an abscess, this will bring it to a head and help the abscess to drain much quicker. Which is exactly what you want. Heat will not only speed up the healing process, but reduce inflammation and decrease pain. I know it may seem the other way around, but trust me, I have treated several abscesses and heat is definitely the way to go.
Seeking medical attention is recommended as well as antibiotics will help treat the abscess if it has not healed on it's own.
Using heat is great for missed shots and I do recommend that if you should miss a shot, apply heat right away and up to several times a day to reduce the chance of an abscess forming. Heat will increase circulation in the area which is also what you want when you have an abscess forming.
I cannot stress enough the importance of using clean new needles and making sure to clean the area with alcohol and washing your hands well before injecting. Using clean water to cook with is also really important and keeping your cooker and other equipment clean is a must!
If you don't have alcohol clean the skin with soap and water really well.

If anyone needs any information on needle exchanges I can post information for your area.
For anyone wanting to brush up on safer injecting there is a great manual and I will post that up for you guys.

I am having trouble downloading the attachment I wanted to share, but you can google it and download the manual. It is called, "Getting off Right" and is a great manual for those new to injection drug use or even for those who have been injecting for a while.
Just google or search on any search engine for the above title and you should be able to easily download it. I have a couple of copies I keep around. I wish I could send everyone a copy that injects.
It really is a great read.
Sorry, I am unable to attach it here. Either I am just really stoned or not as computer savvy as I would like to think.
I will keep trying, but meanwhile if you are bored or really want some good info take a look at it.

Nah, you didnt make me feel badly, you just made me feel like an idiot.

LOL, I'm J/k, you didnt do anything but correct me on something that I thought I had finally put my finger on. I know that I will still here people contradict this regularly. As a matter of fact, the person that told me to put an ice pack on an abscess is actually a very respected MD in this area. Although he (and others) will argue about this until they are blue in the face, and will go to their grave with their opinion, and after alot of back and forth by me, I've finally figured out what side of the fence I will rest on. Even though I have the upmost respect for the person that I talked to on this subject, and know his credentials, and how brilliant he is, and when it comes down to it, I really dont know candy that well at all, I am going to have to say that I will take your word over his.

After all, I wonder how many times he's shot up? (LOL, this guy is straight as an arrow, hes never even took a puff of a cigarette, thats about as far as his experimentation goes.) Thank you very much Candy, and TBH, I am glad that I made myself look like an idiot. If I wouldn't have made this post, I would still be misinformed.

    Thank you very much candy.

May I be excused from class now?

Yeah, I've always used heat for both missed fixes and nasty abscesses and it greatly reduces the healing time, and if its a missed shot, you can feel it dissolving into your tissue at a faster rate. Actually I missed a two days ago and cut a towel into three inch, two feet long shreds and alternated them out with hot water at least 6 times over a period over an hour and by the next morning it was gone, literally wouldn't have known it was there. And for abscesses(), it takes a little longer, but heat in any form will help definitely, wish I would have known about this long ago

I have two abscesses in the last 3 months. I didn't notice them until 4-5 days later when I feel the area becoming stiff. Heat will "ripein" the abscess speeding it along. I use Cephalexin 500 mg 3 times a day for a week and 800 mg Ibuprofen 3 times a day for swelling and pain.

Around the third day, I drained them using a sterile xacto blade. Lots of puss and I wonder just where all that puss comes from for 2 days. But oh does it bring relief.

I haven't had to see a doctor with this approach and have since been using syringe filters and proper darts for IM.

My non-professional but raised around nurses advise is:

Garlic in the first few days, like 4 BIG cloves a day. Chop them up into little pieces and toss and wash, this isn't pro advice but it works for me, 2 decades of shooting tar and I've never needed anti-biotics for an abscess.

I really wouldn't do this for more than 3-4 days, if you're not seeing improvement on day 4, get help. I can usually tell two days out if a muscle or miss is going bad and I start wolfing down garlic.

I'm not a med pro, this is just what has worked for me so take it with a grain of salt, but 3-4 cloves a day has kept me from ever seeking help for an abscess.. If you run a fever, fuck the garlic and go see a doc..

FYI: If you go to the hospital to get an abscess drained it hurts like a mother f'er. They give you a local anesthetic but since the area is infected it doesnt help one bit. They basically cut it open and drain it as much as possible and then insert gauze to keep the abscess open for several days to redrain it again. Ouch ouch ouch. After getting a scar worse than my track marks at the time I decided to take matters into my own hands if it ever happened again. You CAN suck most of the puss out with a syringe and what you cant get out you can poke with a syringe around the abscess to drain it. I actually injected hydrogen peroxide into my abscess and watched ole faithfull shoot out a whole bunch of nasty stuff. I recommend that anyone who gets and abscess to go the the hospital and dont take matters into their own hands and get antibiotics.

This isn't really a reply to anyone specific, and slightly off-topic, but there's another reason to use heat. The bacteria that most commonly infects wounds and other things in the body obviously thrives at our body temperature. well, they can't survive much warmer than that, so heat will actually kill a lot of the bacteria, depending on how long you heat it up for. Just like with pasteurization, you don't have to boil it to kill the bacteria, it just takes longer the lower the temperature is. obviously some bacteria will survive, but often with abcesses it's a matter of just slowing down the infection enough that the body's natural defenses can take care of it.

EDIT: to the poster above me: hydrogen peroxide is awesome stuff. the regular USP concentration works great as an antibacterial, and it bubbles when it comes in contact with infected tissue, which is great because it really gets it down into the cut/infection. and the best part of it is that it doesn't hurt at all! unless it's REALLY sensitive, where ANYTHING that touches it hurts, but even then it won't hurt anymore than water.

While doing alot of reading up regaurding this topic, I came across this post on BL. For the most part, if it comes from BL, I dont even pay attention to it, but this looks interesting. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this, or know if there is any truth to it?

I checked the search engine, and saw a lot of posts about having and identifying abscesses, but didn't see anything about getting rid of them. I thought this might be some helpful information for people trying to get rid of them.

Let me start off by saying that if you have one, your right thing to do is go to the hospital and get it looked at by the doctor. The information I am giving is not from a doctor, and I do not claim for this to be a cure all/fix all for treatment. I do, however, know that not everyone can afford to go to the hospital, for monetary or legal reasons. So, in the name of harm reduction, here is an option to try before you go to see the doctor.

That being said, a while ago, I had an abscess from shooting dope that was terrible and I couldn't get it to go away. I had just gotten from my job, and I was on probation, so I didn't have any money and if I got into any trouble, I was facing jail time.

My good friend is a professional Kung Fu fighter, and in his ten years of fighting, he has encountered a lot of infections. When he told me that he could probably get rid of it, I did not believe him, considering it hadn't gone away in two weeks. I was soon convinced otherwise.

    WHAT HE NEEDED:
    Shotglass (or small glass)
    Salt
BC Powder (or crushed up aspirin)
    Baking Soda
    Flour
    Water
    Wash Towel
    Abscess
    Access to Extremely Hot Water
    Clean Bandage for After

    WHAT HE DID:

Take a shotglass (or a small glass). Take equal parts of BC powder (if you don't have any BC, powder, crush up some aspirin pills), flour, baking soda, and salt, and pour them in the shotglass. You'll need enough to fill the shotglass about half of the way up. Pour in some water, but only enough to get all of the powder wet. You don't want a liquid solution, just a wet mixture of powder. Stir it all together.

Once you have the solution, clean off your abscess with soap and water. Once the area is clean, take some of the damp powder and make a layer of it on top of the abscess, covering it completely.

Turn on your sink, and turn the heat all the way up. Once the water is steaming, get the washcloth completely saturated, and cover the abscess with it and press down. The water should be so hot that it will fucking hurt. It can be extremely uncomfortable, but will be worth it.

Once the washcloth cools off, remove it from the abscess, and repeat the process about five times in a row. Once you are done, clean it off again and wrap it in a bandage.

This is the exact process he used on me. It was extremely painful, and took about thirty minutes. The next day, less than 24 hours later, the abscess was completely gone.

I have used this process one more time since then, and it worked both times.

Like I said, the best thing to do to cure an abscess is to go see the doctor. This was just my last ditch effort to do something about it. I had already made a doctor appointment for the next day, but my friend asked me to let him try something before I went. It was just crazy... I canceled the appointment because it was gone by them.

    Be safe...

when i got a really sick abcess
i poked/tore it with a needle , drained it into the sink,
rinsed it with cold water, rinsed it again with peroxide,

Umm....maybe to avoid possible septicemia. In fact it really bad advise to suggest aspirating an abscess .If it needs aspirating get medical help.

For all of my playing with needles when I was a kid I never got an abscess. I guess I was lucky to have learned from some one who practiced basic harm reduction. I did get one from getting stuck with a nail. We were moving some old boards from our basement and one stuck me in the leg.

I went to see my doctor for a Tetanus shot and because it was starting to look weird - red, warm to the touch etc... I hadn't really heard of an abscess at the time. He lanced it and I was surprised how much gunk came out. It looked like a small boil on the surface but most of it was subcutaneous.

And why go to the ER when you know they are just going to treat you like absolute shit? No, I'm sorry, thats what they do to all their patients on a daily basis. They take extra special care of those who come in with abscesses due to IV drug use. He might tell you that he is giving you a local anesthetic, but just shoot you up with water. When it comes to squeezing all of the infection out, not only will he use enough force to make sure, 100%, without the slightest doubt, that its out, but he will use more than enough force to make sure that your buddies out in the ER can hear you screaming (and trust him, he knows what hes doing. he will make sure you scream), and that you never forget his name, the date, the time, and every other minor detail, because this doc makes sure that he teaches you a lesson. When he packs it with antibacterial gauze, he overstuffs it, just 'to be safe', and when he dresses it, he will make sure that its not going to come loose, after all, its so tight its cutting off your circulation. Finally, just to ensure that you've had plenty of time to reflect the hell that he put you through, he 'forgets' to click the discharge button, and you sit there for another hour. Ohh, and of course, when you go to pick up your meds from the pharmacy, they had absolutley no problem filling the antibiotics, fortunatley; as a matter of fact, the doctor called them and told them to dispense more, and a higher mg. While he was at it, he cancelled the prescription for the perc 10 325's, all 60 of them. This infuriates the hell out of you, and is the last straw. It took every ounce of self control you had not to kill the doc while he was putting you through all this hell, but since he (intentionally) pumped you up (and phsyched you out) for the painkillers by repeatedly saying how EVERYONE who has to have an abscess drained usually needs at least a weeks worth of both anitbiotics and painkillers.

A slightly exagerated (but in all fucking honesty its not off by much) story, but I've read/heard/seen numerous horror stories....

I'm glad everyone that you know is a professional IV'er. I've been around motherfuckers that say they IV, but they dont know how to fix the dope, barley know how to tie off (but never have one), and they sure as shit dont know how to hit themselves. They actually expect someone to do this for them every time they want to get high. If you hear this chump talkin on the streets though, he's a 'hard core, straight up junkie, no joke.' ROFL. If this guy ever asked me to fix him up, I would stab him with his needle and steal his dope. Fake gangsters are wanksters, so what does that make fake junkies? Wunkies? Fuckin wunkies!

Sadly it's true that many doctors mistreat abscesses, but after you've tried a hot compress and you still have an abscess......get medical help.Do not try to aspirate it yourself.

Not a good idea. You need an appropriate antibiotic in the right course.Otherwise not only will it not work, you'll also mess up your ability to use antibiotics in the future.

Nick, This is a great point. I don't know about your side of the pond but over here antibiotics have been grossly over-prescribed. Doctors have only recently started scaling back their use. People develop immunity to them. Your body can take care of itself some times. That's why seeing a doctor is very important as they are trained to make that decision.

There are also, as Nick previously indicated, different types of antibiotics and various types of infections. It's not worth risking your life by self-medicating. Some people have had success it's not guaranteed.

I always hate hearing stories of junkies or those who are IV drug users being treated poorly when going to get medical care. I guess being a former IV drug user myself, I have always had a soft spot for anyone dealing with any kind of addiction or problems associated with that lifestyle.
I would cringe at the thought of a doctor administering water instead of Lidocaine to numb the area being lanced. I have yet to see that happen and hope I don't.
I have treated many abscesses, never had one myself. Surprisingly so after all the years I injected that nasty tar.
But, I really have to say that clean practices will help to reduce the number of abscesses people get.
Now this doc that Oxy talks about seems to have his information backwards. I am sure he is a great doctor, but heat is the best to use when you have an abscess. Not only does it help with circulation to the area to bring the necessary oxygen, but helps in bringing about all those white blood through increased circulation to help digest all that nasty bacteria.
My best advice is to really consider medical attention before lancing a abscess yourself. This can lead to septicemia, which is when the bacteria enters into the blood stream and that can be extremely dangerous and make you very sick. And getting medical attention will help you to get the right antibiotics that treat skin infections like abscesses.

i want to bump this thread and ask if anyone thinks what i'm about to explain is an abscess.

i did my shot, pulled back and it registered so i started to inject, checking it halfway through and then finished my shot. i didn't miss (or at least i didn't think so) because there was no pain upon injection. after a minute or so a small white bump arose at the injection site, which i shrugged off because it seems like every time i do a shot into my left arm, i get spots, bumps, or (supposedly) rashes in that area. a few minutes later though it started to get red, warm, and puffy about a 50-cent piece in diameter around the injection site. it's not numb, nor is it painful and after putting a super hot rag on it for ten or fifteen minutes the redness has gone away but it's still a bit swollen and i can feel it getting harder. can anyone tell me what this is? i always wash my hands, clean the area with alcohol and use new needles every time.

and i have another medical question for anyone who can answer. is there such a thing as a bruised vein? i have a bruise underneath the skin right on top of a vein and it's pretty tender. has anyone had this?

First Question: you most likely missed some of your shot, like the OP says, abscess will take a while to show up ~48 hours. So you do not have an abscess yet, treat the area like you do have one though, massage, apply heat, all that good stuff.

Second question: It's just a bruise, no worries.

so it's been a little more than 24 hours and the spot is starting to redden up but not much. it's been tender the whole time but hasn't started to swell. i'm really hoping that it isn't an abscess. i've been applying a hot rag as often as i can and massage it pretty frequently but i suppose i'm just to keep watching it right?

are there any better ideas for applying heat, that someone could suggest? i would appreciate any and all advice.

    good advice! Thank you!
As for abscesses, I can personally vouch for NOT doing it yourself. I missed a shot in my hand and got an abscess, and decided to drain it myself with an Xacto knife and some gauze. Bad fucking idea, now I have a big assed scar on the back of my hand.
