    Default the abscess thread

This is pasted from another thread, but i think it will help a lot of people on this site and may be sticky worthy. it describes my abscess i got removed 48 hrs ago.

FIRST POST ON ANOTHER FORUM NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO
just wanna start this thread with a god dammit!.

on my bicep, close to the crook of my right arm, a bump arose. the bump is not HARD, but its basicly feels like a huge zit on my arm. its about the width of a half dollar and the height of like 2 1/2 quarters on top of each other. the bump is pinkish light red and warm to the touch.

---- I do not have a fever. I do not feel sick. I actually feel pretty good, except for my arm, which only hurts when i flex my bicep or brush the bump against my skin.

until this morning, it hadnt really been bothering me. I woke up and today it HURTS SO BAD to move my arm.

there is no whitehead on it. ive been puttin neosporin on it (maybe stupid) and it seems like its dried out the skin, but this morning it seems like the redness may have spread just a tiny bit, and it started hurting.

i wish i could upload a pic. ive looked on the net for abscess pictures, nothing i can find matches what i have.

the weird thing is, the last time i banged up there was the 23rd of august. thats like 18 days. the bump didnt appear until a good 3 days or so after

has anyone here had an abscess and gone to the hospital? im 19 and im not so worried about my parents unless im gonna be in the hospital for 15 days like i read. wtf? and people are put on painkillers after. wtf?

i can make an appt with my former bupe doctor, he'll see me and either prescribe me something like antibiotics, or tell me to get my ass to an ER.

THIS IS THE POST AFTER I GOT BACK FROM THE ER

so i went to hospital last night. bump was getting bigger. couldnt fold arm, hurt so bad it had to be straightened out 24/7. pain was so bad.

there is something that unless u have had an abcess u cant tell someone. the longer you wait with an abscess, the worse it will feel getting it operated on.

i went in at around 2 am, got back in the ER around 3, got IV antibiotics. shot me up with morphine, and then operated.

and IT WAS THE MOST PAINFULL EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE. imagine having a bump on ur arm that is huge and hurts bad when its stationary, and then having a FAT ASS needle full of novacaine stuck down in it, i cried like a baby. Then, i got a shitty morphine shot. because of my suboxone (down to 1mg, 1 pill left, hadnt taken it in almost 48 hrs when i went to the ER) the morphine shot didnt work.

they took a scalpel to it. i cried. it took em probably 15 minutes to work on it. they had a guy nurse hold my hand while i boo hooed and the female nurse operated on it. the slicing was bad, the pressure squeezing out the puss was the worse part. i was semi screaming. worst experience of my life.

after it was over they bandaged my arm, and i REALLY started crying. the hot nurse i had came in after it was over and asked what my pain level was, i started crying and she goes "oh, looks like a 10" and gave me another morphine shot. i dunno the mg but it was 2 of those little glass morphine vials. that did the trick

they have my on clindamycin (antibiotic). and percocet. i slept for 12 hours today. i have to go tomorrow and get my bandage drained (its leaking, big red spot on my bandage the bigger than a golf ball in size).

all in all, if you want someone to go to the ER with an abscess, tell them that the longer they wait, the more pain they will be in.

they said it was one of the worst they'd seen. the nurse that gave me the morphine shot said that she heard people talkin about it and that it was a bad one.

AND THIS IS SOME ADVICE I GAVE TO SOMEONE WITH AN ABSCESS WHO WAS THINKIN OF LETTING IT GO

i just got out of the ER 24 hrs ago for a horrible abscess i just let go.

the longer u wait, the more painful it will be.

does it hurt already. mine got to the point of hurting so badly that i could not move my arm out of the extended position

ask yourself, how painful would it be to have a 2 inch needle inserted into the middle of it. after that is done how painful would it be to have some doctor SQUEEZING the life out of it and pressing on it as hard as they can. does it hurt? everyday you go without medical attention the pain will be worse. also, with ur 60mg dilaudid a day binge do you really thing the ~30mg of morphine IV before the procedure will do you any good? NO. i cried like a baby. during and for about 20 minutes after the procedure.

your fine if your typing this (HE THOUGHT HE HAD A NEAR OD BUT DIDNT). you need to be worried about the abscess. describe it for me

hopefully someone with an abscess will read this and go to the ER. alot of the info i posted will help persuade people to go. this should be the thread that gets linked into a thread when someone thinks they have an abscess.

hey, and maybe even a sticky (i would clean it up)

you were in pain cuz you took subs before morphine and i'm surprised it hurt that bad after a lido block.
you posted this from bluelight thread? there is already an abscess thread here at opiophile that is stickied.

just type in "abscess" in the search function. hope you're feeling better.

the morphine vials usually are 10mg total. they make them in 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10mg. 10mg is the most common. you prob got 2 of the 6mg vials i think. i am prob wrong haha.

Wow. Did you tell them you were on sub?

They're supposed to hit you with large doses of strong meds... the guidelines for doctors treating a bupe patient are really clear about high dosing and "titrate to effect" (meaning give more until it works).

I happen to carry the article about the guidelines around with me in case I get in a car accident or something; I know they'd have to give me massive doses and/or LOTS of local anesthestia/or a nerve block (those last two are not blocked by sub).

Man I almost feel your pain..... and I thought the little pimple on my finger was bad.

    Best of luck!

i feel your pain. i had a monster abcess on my hip, this thing was about 5 times the size of the one you described. went to the doctor, he had me go to the hospital for emergency surgery. at this point i felt so sick, i would do some dope and feel like i had a horrible flu, then an hour later when it wore of i felt like i had malaria and terminal aids and just gone through 3x the normal chemo dose at the same time. so i get down there, i was on dope but the pain was bad. they gave me demerol IV (which was awesome btw ) and tried to squeeze the shit out of it to avoid surgery. i grabbed the motherfucker by the shirt and said GIVE ME THE SURGERY IF YOU KEEP SQUEEZING THIS I WILL SQUEEZE YOUR NUTS TILL THEY POP. maybe in different (harsher) words, but you get the idea. for that surgery they knocked me out. i had a huge hole in my hip and a lot of pain after the surgery, packed with guaze that i had to replace twice a day for two months. the whole experience sucked balls, and to make it worse all i got were vicodin 5mgs. luckily i had 5 different scripts, one from my PCP, one from the first doc i saw there, one from the surgeon, and one from the outake doc (oh i guess thats 4 scripts).

but anyways, i couldnt score dope cause i was stuck in bed, i couldnt walk so i was dopesick and the vics didnt touch that or the pain. this lady i used to shoot dope with was kind enough to bring me dope on a couple occasions tho. sweet lady, i feel bad about stealing so many pills and dope from her.

No matter where you hit on your body, an abscess can show up in a different place than where you hit. Say, you do an IM in your left bicep, then a few days later an abscess shows up on your right thigh.
Abscesses are not picky about where they go.
True, it is most likely your going to get an abscess from where you last did your IM, but especially with IV use...they can show up just about anywhere.
Make sure your using a long enough needle for IM injections and rub the site well after the injection to circulate the fluid into the tissue. This goes the same for a missed IV hit! If you ever have any questions, please send me a message. I work Harm Reduction and worked in the ER as an RN for many years.
There are so many things you can do to avoid those nasty abscesses!
Hope you feel better and I am always around...Well, now anyway!

To keep the abscess fairy away you have to be pathologically sterile,

rinse everything in 99% alcohol, use sterile water or boil the shit

out of it and always clean the skin with alcohol before shooting.

    And filter,filter,filter. ! .
