i came across this on wikipedia, and thought it was really interesting cause i never knew this. Posting it here cause i'm sure someone else will too. oh ya and for those who dont know, loperamide is immodium.
"
When loperamide is taken by itself, it cannot readily cross the blood-brain barrier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood-brain_barrier); however, when loperamide-containing nanoparticles are coated with polysorbate 80 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polysorbate_80) and injected, the results were the same as typical opiates and opioids -- long, effective analgesia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analgesia). A solution prepared using loperamide coated with polysorbate 80 resulted in a very short duration of action and less effective analgesic effect. The same study concluded that loperamide does not cause any analgesic effects when taken by itself.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loperamide#_note-1)
Concurrent administration of P-glycoprotein inhibitors with loperamide has been found to produce respiratory depression, indicative of central opioid action. [3]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loperamide#_note-2)
