View Full Version : Screwing My Liver Up?

O.K. I'm a little baby asking about this. My biggest fear is insomnia. The one time I kicked I didn't shut my eyes for nine days. I could fight everything else, but the insomnia makes me nuts.

Confession being that I armed myself with Tylenol PM's when I kicked last almost a year, and a half ago. They didn't help during the kick, but I've taken them every single night since. Usually about six to ten of them.

Is that stuff going to make my liver explode? You hear on the news that if you take Tylenol with booze or take too many you get liver failure. It'll be just my luck to suffer from something so "innocent". Oh well at least I won't have any stigma dying from it. Pffff.

Thanks in advance. Note also I took regular Tylenol all the time when I was using. I've noticed the PM's without the acetamenophen work alright too, but I insist on the blue pills too. I think they remind me of Lorcet's or maybe even the blue beauty of a bag minus a stamp.

Yah this craps not good for your liver. If you're taking 10 of these per night I suggest you stop immediately. Take the tylenol PM with just the Diphenhydramine in it, or don't take it at all. Tylenol is not safe like they make it sound, it's hard on the liver and I wouldnt take more than 1-2 regular strength (approx 325mg) pills a day of the normal tylenol. I'm not sure about the toxicity of the ingrdient that makes you sleep which is the Diphenhydramine but the tylenol is not needed unless you want to have a fucked up liver. It's your body and you decide what to put in it so I wont hassle you about it. I'd really be concerned If I was taking that many of them everyday, thats all. You should probably find something else to help you sleep. Maybe a natural supplement of somesort that is "safe" for your liver and kidneys would be better. Theres some stuff out there that can help. I don't know how they interact with opiates but melatonin and valerian root are supposed to be good for insomnia. I find that opiates cause SWIM to be drowsy but totally unable to sleep but I don't take anything to help me sleep. I used to take trazodone but it has a horrible interaction with opiates i know 2 people who've ended up in the hospital from taking normal doses of their opiates and the trazodone the doctor prescribed them. They aren't drug abusers either so they were taking what was given to them and they almost died. Trazodone used to help me alot and it's not addictive so who knows maybe it coud be good for other people. The 2 people were on methadone, not on anything else so it could be fine with morphine or heroin for all i know. Just something to consider, itworks relalywell.

See if you can score some Seroquel. Don't let the label
"atypical antipsychotic" scare you off, it's totally harmless at
low doses 25-50mg. The real nutjobs with delusions take 10x
that much. At low levels, you will sleep like a baby, and
experience NO WIERDNESS.

It's commonly given to folks who also take an SSRI and find
that they then have trouble sleeping a bit....

I take 50mg each night and get good rest.

Yes, stop taking all that tylenol! Even cheaper than the "tylenol" PM's without tylenol, is whatever store brand generic diphenhydramine tablets or capsules you can get at your local drug store. Much cheaper. I take diphenhydramine at bedtime pretty frequently, because opiates keep me up.

BUT, about five years ago, when I had a totally raging hydrocodone/tylenol habit, I was taking TEN (10) of lortab 10/650's or 10/500's or Norco 10/325's if I could get them, ten at a time, like four or five times a day!

After I got rehabbed-up, I had my liver checked, and yes, my "enzymes" were pretty elevated. The doctor initially thought the liver tests indicated hepatitis, so I got tested for all of those, and thank God no hepatitis. I told him about my drug habit and he said definitely the acetaminophen could have done that.

Also, when I was in rehab back in 1998 (not the most recent time, which was in 2000), there was a guy in there who had had a fucking liver transplant because of too much acetaminophen!

It can kill you.

Much thanks you all. Holy chit now I'll panic. I am an irresponsible boob. Killing off my liver, and not even getting high.

I'm not worried about the dying part, but I'd probably have to hang around, and turn into a little yellow dog, and there is nobody gonna give me a liver.

Had all the obligatory tests, and amen to this no hep for me either. I had a really high liver enzyme count too. Must have been all my Excedrins. Took them my whole life. It's a bitch cause it causes your bleeding time to hit the roof. Took me a whopping half hour almost to stop bleeding during a test.

Thanks again. At least I won't get a blood clot. As of this second I'm off that stuff. ;)

Have a doctor prescribe you ambien or just order you some from these on-line pharmacies. Not sure if the on-line stuff is the real thing but what I get from my drugstore works miracles.Best of all there is no hangover or drowsiness the next day IF you allow for 5 to 7 hours of un-interrupted sleep.

Ambien works really really well for sleep. BUT, if you're trying to kick, get clean, that is, it's probably best to avoid it in my opinion. Ambien is pretty addictive in my experience. It's almost like a hallucinogen in large doses (30-40mg) - back in 2000, I was taking like 10 a day, starting out first thing in the morning (how's that for a sick dope fiend?).

Yeah, it works, but it's definitely habit forming. Sonata is pretty neat too. Almost the same as ambien, but it only lasts like a hour and a half, as opposed to about 3 or 4 hours for ambien. You can snort sonata will really intense effects, too. Sonata comes in little capsules, which are only about half full with fine white powder. When I was abusing it, I'd pour out two 10mg capsules (of sonata) and snort one little pile up each nostril. Kicks in in about half a minute. Very intense. Some geometric patterns even, kind of like a trippy sedative.

The absolute highest dose of acetaminaphine (tylenol) that can be taken daily is 4 grams, or 4,000 mgs. And the FDA and the AMA are probably going to lower that amount at the end of 2005. And, point, that dose is to be spread over a 24 hour period. Drinking even an ounce of alcohol will potentiate the effects on the liver. SO, if you need Tylenol PM to sleep, what you need is Diphenhydramine, which you can buy in any drugstore for about $7.00, for anywhere from 100 to 200 25 mg capsules or tablets. An average dose for sedation in 50-100 mg, orally, and 25-50 mg IV. Hope that helps.
