View Full Version : Old used needles safe?

Since viruses only stay alive outside of the body for a certain amount of time,
it seems to me it would be completely safe to use someone else's needle if it
hasn't been used for a week. Mine is too dull to use, and I have some that someone
left here a couple weeks ago, and they only used it a couple times. I'm tempted
to use it, but wanted to get some opinions on this first.

NO NO NO NO....but if you are going to do it.. be sure to bleach . Not a quick draw up and squirt..but a real cleaning.
You have needles, although they may be dull and a pain to use...you know they are not infected with anything..why risk it?
yeah hep c can live for 30 days outside the body.
but still, i wouldn't say use that fit on day 31, if y'know what i mean?

If theres blood in the needle it can protect the virus hepC. The blood protects it from drying out and from sunlight so it can live in there a long time. Why even use that needle if its used? I had an ex-boyfriend who used steroids and he used a new one every single time.

Have you tried to sharpen the bevel on a matchbox? I hear that's what older junkies used to do...

No, someone told me they heard you can sharpen it by sticking it in a
potato though. I don't see how that would sharpen it, seems like it would
dull it.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I looked up how long Hep C stays alive outside the
body and the first site said 4 days. Then the next 10 sites said anywhere from a month
to a year. Glad I didn't use any.

I'd say it would be fine to use as long as you clean the living hell out of it first.
I'd say first wrap it in foil and boil it for a good 10 minutes, then soak the needle in bleach for at least 10 or 20 minutes. Finally, soak the needle in rubbing alcohol for 20 minutes.
There's no way any virus or bacteria would survive that.

Now, logically and rationally speaking, if you were to use the method I described, it would be perfectly clean and safe to use (although maybe not sharp).
It will do nothing for the "icky" factor involved, in which you'd still know that it is a used needle, but for all intents and purposes, it's freakin' clean, shut up and use it!
Icky, yes. Dirty, no.

Have you actually done this yourself to clean a used needle. To me it makes no sense to wrap it in foil. You would have a better chance at killing anything off by boiling the needle itself in boiling water, not that I recommend that.
If at all possible just use your own needles and don't share with others.

The purpose of wrapping it in foil is to prevent the plastic hub from melting or warping.
You could go ahead and boil it without the foil, but I just put that in as a precaution. If the plastic melts or warps, it could compromise the function of the needle. An autoclave would certainly work well for sterilizing needles and related gear.
And yes, of course it would be better to use fresh, clean needles every time, but desperate times call for desperate measures, as they say. All I'm saying is that it is possible to clean a needle used by someone else without risking contaminating yourself with any diseases or viruses.
