View Full Version : Odd Swelling at injection site

So,
Swim was injecting roughly 3mg of suboxone into the middle (ish) vein on my left hand (top of my hand),
I must have missed, didn't feel like it though no burn or anything. The needle was pulled out there was a little droplet of the suboxone solution that came back out of the hole at the injection site. (a pretty good indicator i did in fact miss).
That was yesterday (the 30th of may), now my hand is noticably swollen, and its it very painful to extend my fingers fully and it hurts to the touch. (feels like I banged it real hard on something.)
Any ideas whats up?
Will it just go away?
I've been icing it a bunch today, should I continue?
Thanks-

you might be getting an abcess. if you dont have any way to get anti-biotics you should go to petco and get some tetracycline for fish. thats what i do anyway.

I wouldnt think an abcess would appear that quickly, but I could be wrong. Have you been using that spot often? If yes than excercise caution with the issue. In fact, even in the hospital if they start an IV there on me it burns like a sum bitch, the IV injection point almost looks like it never healed(hole is pronounced) and I have a sore, throbbing pain fer about two weeks.
Never used my hand fer recreational use, but say Im in the hospital, if a nurse even eyes that spot, I tell her NO!
Keep the prick on ice and see if it goes away. But if the swelling and pain gets worse quickly, Id have it checked out. Maybe give it a day or two

Goddamn bro-I couldnt imagine. Maybe its just me. I think the first time I had an IV in my dick skinners was when I was 15, I had my appendix out and that fuckin IV was miserable!!
Fuck it if it works fer ya, do it

I only did it the 30th, for the second time EVER. Do ya'll think it might actually be an abcess?
Is there any way i could have gone right through the vein and hit something else causing some irritation?
thanks for the quick reply's

like pill said, it is a little early for an abcess to start showing up, but you can never be too sure. if you miss shooting pills though, i would think you're pretty much in for an abcess. ive never shot pills though so i dont know. im not sure exactly whats going on, but if it starts getting worse over the next few days i would see a doctor.

someone is giving me some antibiotics
Doxycycline 100MG
what should I use as a daily dosage (in your opinion. i know you most likely an give out specific health advice like this. I promise i wont sue you or anyone else. just don't wanna deal with hospitals if i can deal with it myself.

I would forget the antibiotics, unless it is a full 10 day dose than it won't work effectively.
The veins in the hands are more fragile than those in the arms. What generally happens is that you miss and the hand swells. Obviously!
I would use some heat to help absorb the fluid sitting in the tissue. I recommend making your own heating pad if you don't have one.
Just put a wet small towel in the microwave for a few minutes, pop it into a ziplock bag and wrap that in a towel.....Homemade Heating pad!
I have had the same thing happen to me and heat works best!

I'm not one of the health mods, but am an RN by profession and an experienced IV drug user.
Sounds like you just missed your shot and your body is reacting acordingly by swelling.
Is there any heat? Fever? I know there is pain
Take a few Nsaids, try some heat first to help the tissues absorb the excess fluid and then switch over to ice.
In the rare event that it is an abcess don't just take any antibiotic..unless it's a broad Spectrum one.
And Doxy is not a very good one for true abscesses.
I bet things start getting better soon.

Thanks for all of your responses. I'm just a little paranoid about potential swelling (and abscesses and infection). My girlfriend had a near fatal case of cellulitis (ironically in her left hand) which started as a little bit of swelling then went horribly bad in the span of 3-4 days. She was in the hospital for damn near a week and half and almost died and nearly needed her arm amputated up to the elbow.
I'm going to try taking the NSAIDs and using a heat compress (i have one of those dual heat / cold compresses (either freeze or microwave)).
Should i alternate heat and cold or just stick with heat?
I think im done IVing suboxone, don't really know why i do it in the first place, no rush, still takes like 10 mins to get the effects. maybe i'm just addicted to the process and pagentry of shooting up anything.
Thanks again,
J-f
I'll keep ya'll informed of what goes on.

Hey, your the nurse too! I agree with all you and yeah we were typing at the same time. We must be connected in some way through our sisterhood of IV drug using Nurses. Do you think the board of nursing monitors this board? Ah, well fuck them!
And some wise words to anyone who cares.
Don't just take some antibiotic someone gives you. There are many out there and they cover different organisms and are for different parts of the body. Some work better for skin infections, some work better for respiratory infections, etc.
If you don't take the right antibiotic for the recommended time and dosage, you can become resistant to these antibiotics and then when you need them, they don't work. Bacteria are creepy and smart and they can change their DNA to survive their environment.
And if you do get an antibiotic, finish it....that leads to resistance as well.
OK, I am done lecturing! I just want everyone safe!

If its from your skin its a staph aurues infection. The things you can learn from hairdressing! If that doesnt go away you should go get it checked out. :(

thanks for the info candy!
I do try to be well informed and read up on any pills that i may be taking, while researching Doxycycline I found this info on it:
Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections, including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections; Lyme disease; acne; infections of skin, genital, and urinary systems; and anthrax (after inhalational exposure). It is also used to prevent malaria. Doxycycline is in a class of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria.
I have access to more than enough of the 100mg pills to complete a 10 day cycle (i've heard 2x a day for 10 days)
In a recent up date i have started to get a couple (2) small (1mm) clear blisters on the potential infection site. not sure if this means anything or not.

Just an update for anyone following this thread (or who cares).
I was just being panicky (and so is life.....)
The hand after a few days and hot compresses went down to normal size and there is no more pain.
Thanks sooo much, again, to everyone who helped me out with this!!!
Sorry to have the false alarm...(well IM not sorry it was a false alarm, just don't want drama)
Ya'll rock.

Hey usually when you hand swells crazy like that, quickly, its from hitting a nerve. The hit may not even hurt, but it most probably was a nerve. Give it a week or two and it will start to go down. Don't start taking antibiotics, those are only for bacterial infections, if it swelled that quick odds are it isn't an infections its a nerve. Stay safe and don't take antibiotics or else when you need to they won't work

well from the swelling thing, i'ld say u did an under skin shot.
going away or not, depends on the amount and your body actually
to kill it, just get an anibiotic, period.
Thanks-
