Sup all,
So, I've been mostly clean for like 3 months now due to legal problems and treatment and such and the shit is starting to hit the fan for me. I've always used opiates and other drugs to self medicate for insomnia and anxiety. Now that I can't get high freely I am having real problems with those issues. I was in the past perscribed xanax, but I'm fuckin sure that they'll never let me be on that again. I could, however, try something else. Though probably not any sleep aids like ambien cause they think it's to habit forming for a fuck-stick worthless junkie like me; never mind that I have only slept like 8 hours in the past 4 days. I am really starting to loose it. So, my question is what other meds work for all you folks out there in opiate land when they can't or won't use opiates? I really need something to help combat the anxiety and depression that I'm dealing with right now or I'll never be able to stay clean long enough to get the hell out of this program.
EtOH........yes I know it's really a depressant, but one - and another - = + ......:)

Funny you should say good ol ethanol, cause I've been drinkin smirnoff citrus and sobe no fear shooters all day. I'm fuckin wasted:):):). I think we all know you love that most ancient nectar alcohol, however I do get UA'ed for it, meaning I can't drink more than 12 hours before and test, and they're random tests.
Thanks DV

HA
none :(
and i've been on a shitload in the past eighteen years(diagnosed with major depressive disorder at only 12 yrs old).
honestly opiates are the only cure for my depression and that's the sole reason why i'm an addict.
unfortunately the government/medical community don't see things my way. although i do have a sub doc who thinks that drugs should be legalized. so i guess if it were up to him i would have my way.
anyways - right now i'm taking seroquel and maybe it actually is helping - not as an anti-depressant but as a mood stabilizer. it certainly helps me with sleep issues that's for sure.
so if you're looking for something to help stabilize your moods and to aide in sleeping - maybe ask your doc about seroquel. it's non-habit forming as well.
also, as far as anti-depressants go - it's generally hit or miss. what works for one person may not work for another and it can take years to find the right drugs and proper dosages. if you're willing to go through a lot of trial and error and put up with a lot of nasty side effects in some cases you just MIGHT find something that does you some good.
in spite of my negative attitude(which is based solely on my own experiences) towards anti-depressants i wish you good luck in your endeavor to find something that's right for you. :)

There are a couple of herbal teas and extracts you can use that may help with anxiety, insomnia and depression. I kno one is Valerian root extract. I've tooken it to help me sleep and it totally relaxes you and puts your ass to sleep. Another is Chamomile tea. Just drink some of that and it will calm your ass down. these al work for anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Just depends on how much you take. Try to go to your local health store, like a vitamin store, these herbs can be found there. I'm sure if you look up some of these or search for more herbs on google. Good luck manI hope you get some sleep cuz I kno how that is I was going thru major W/D's tho. Take care
First, try Saint John's Wort. Don't mix it with other anti-depressants tho, as it is VERY strong.
I've been on aropax/ paroxytine (same thing, different brand names)... which worked, especially for anxiety... but that was pre-opiate addiction.

Some people get relief from insomnia by taking antihistamines, specifically diphenhydramine. I've got several old scrips for Flexeril 10mg (muscle relaxer that docs will still give to people with drug histories). If you take it regularly, it will stop making you drowsy, but until you start to tolerate it, that might put you to sleep. Does me when I use it occaasionally (30-40mg myself-start with 10mg,tho). They still make, although maybe rarely prescribe, these antidepressants in a class called tricyclic antidepressants. They might help your depression. They will make you sleep a lot in the beginning . Things like Elavil, Triavil. Back in 1975, a workmen's comp doc decided he needed to get me off 10mg valium that I had been prescribed 100 a month for about a year. Told me I might have a hard time coming off. I didn't, cause I would take them all in the first week and not have any for three weeks of every month. Anyway, he gave me some 100mg Elavil and I made the mistake of taking one at work later that day. I was on the floor in 30 minutes and didn't really come around for a good four hours. Don't know how it would affect me today.

Seroquel will knock you right the fuck out, bro. I hate that shit though, gives me bad side effects.
what sort of side effects?
i have a REALLY hard time waking up from it and whatever position i fall asleep in is now the same position that i wake up in and because of that i'm sore and stiff as fuck when i wake.
one night i passed out with the alarm clock in my hands after setting it and woke up 8 hours later in the same exact postion holding the fucking clock.
i've also been waking up with headaches each morning whereas i never got headaches before(unless they were opiate wd headaches).
how many mgs do you generally take?
i'm prescribed 25mgs twice a day and then 100mgs at bedtime but so far i haven't needed more than 50mgs to knock me out and keep me sleeping well through the night(and into the next day if i let myself).
shit most nights i won't take more than 25 mgs because otherwise it's just to difficult to shake the fog in the morning.

I've tried them all and the best with the least side effects has to be Effexor. It takes a bit to get to the right dose but it's the most effective for anxiety and depression and also it dont make you into a zombie like allot of others do. Oh and it doesnt cause weight gain like most do.

I guess it really is true that there is a different drug for every person. I used to take benedryl alot, but when it got to the point where I would have to take 10 or 12 of the 25's I decided to try and not take 'em anymore. Only when things are despreate, but those are usually the times when beneies won't cut it. I've tried things like meditation, excersise, not to mention kava kava, Chamomile tea, and zanaflex. The zanaflex worked for sleep but I had to get it from an illict source. I'm gunna start looking at the research on some of the stuff you guys mentioned, thanks alot everyone.

God bro, I hope thats not solicitation! That shit will get you banned quicker than ne thing round here. ;) That said, of course I can get xanax, not to mention klonopin, ativan, and valium. The thing is, I get UA'ed for benzos and go to jail if I don't have a legit script.
I've been reading the TIP: Treatment Improvement Protocol; Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occuring Disorders.
They referenced a few meds I am looking at more closly. Anybody have any expirence with any of these:
Inderal (propranolol) antianxiety
BuSpar (buspirone) antianxiety
Zyprexa (olanzapine) antipsychotic/antidepressant
Sonota (zaleplon) Hypnotic/Sleep Aid

Seriously bro, no solitation no nothing intended here, i had to look it up the dictionary to know what it is that you actually meant.
anyways, it's just that i've been on xanax for 7 straight years now, and having this said, i think its one of the best anxiety and anti depressants on the market, cause its side affects; for me at least; are barely noticable, i've been working steadily and performing all my short and long term tasks and going on with my daily routine while on it.
And so far so good, i just hope for things to remain like this.
From the stuff you mentioned, i'm only familiar with Sonota, it's called somadrel here, and i dont recommend it if you dont wanna look like you're drunk all the time.
I'll ask my friend pharmacist for info about the pros and cons of the other stuff.
Peace.

Holy crap, how many mg's a day? 2?

Xanax by far is for me the most effective drug on the planet. Having said that, it's also too addicting. I've taken them for about 5 or 6 years now but recently asked my Dr to take me off of them.
I currently take 40 mgs Lexepro which has similar qualities of Xanax such as treating panic attacks. I've taken that for 6 years and from what I've heard, it's very hard to get off of. I've been on Welbutrin also, but for me the Lexepro is better.
5 mgs of Valium twice a day, this replaced the xanax I was taking. For me, it seems to be working better and I don't feel like I have to take a handfull at a time to feel normal.
10 mgs Ambien for insomnia. Oh how I can sympathize with you on that. I can go for days without any sleep. The quality of your life is at risk on that one, and that needs to be measured as in, are the benefits worth more than the risks. I've downed bottles of Nyqyil, tried over-the-counter sleep aids and nothing worked. Ambien does for me but what works for me may not be right for you. It's taken me 7 years to get on the right meds and where I am today so hopefully there will be some answers here for you at least to get on the right track.

Holy crap, how many mg's a day? 2?
Well, i started with 4mgs a day, cause i was used to consuming a whole lotta everything i get my hands on. But i slowed down ALOT. For the past 4 years i've been a steady 2 mgs a day, now i'm down to 1mg in an attempt of getting off it, as clearly many of the folks here know; xanxax is very hard to get off; i'm still trying though.
But this doesnt change the fact that it IS probably the best antidepressant / anxiety med on the market, provided that you only want to be able to function as a normal person, and not getting high.

I certainly agree that xanax is by far the best med for me; it takes care depression, anxiety and insomnia all in one little pill. Actualy, for a while I was getting .5 mg disolving strips of xanax. Those were way cool. I also like ativan as well, and probably dislike klonopin the most.
BTW, I'm staring down the barrel of 10 .5's right now. I am pretty sure that I won't get UA'ed till monday, but I still think that it's pushing it for me to take 'em. FUCK i really wanna take them.

I actually have and do take Inderal. Inderal is a Beta-Blocker meaning it is intended for lowering your blood pressure. As with many of these kinds of meds they have dual functionality. I take it for Migraine prevention and it seems to work (at least better than the Topamax I was on). It will help you sleep, but I'm not too sure about it helping with depression. It also should keep anxiety at bay, but can't really be used acutely like a benzo to treat a panic attack.
The one thing I have noticed about Inderal though, is that it is by far the best opiate potentiator I have ever tried/taken...... Not that you necessarily want to hear that.
One of the cool side affects of Inderal is sometimes you wake up after aboput 2 or so hours of sleep and you'll feel stoned out of your gord. This is from the Inderal definitely because I have gotten that feeling on days I've take nothing (opiate/benzo wise). You wake up feel really cool and buzzed, take a piss get a drink of water then lay back down and drift off into dreamland on a big fluffy cloud
For depression, I take Effexor XR. It seems to work on the mood and I haven't noticed any serious side affescts.
I bet Inderal would be great for withdrawals seeing as it seems pretty damn near Clonidine.

I take sonata for sleep...works very well but like stated above you feel like a fucking zombie. As for Buspar....FUCK THAT SHIT it makes my heart beat real fast and almost makes my anxiety worse...as for the other meds, i haven't really fucked with em....Benzos are the best bet, just find a good DOC that will prescribe you some. Im on serax, its a benzo with the lowest addiction potential out of all the benzos, i think its oxazepam medical term-wise...but its pretty good...look into that maybe man...anyways best of luck!

Prozac has literaly saved my life, and mood stabilizers like Topamax (for seizures, but used for psychitropic reasons) work very well. Topamax also helps with sleep (though it is a daily med not a PRN). When it comes to psych meds, everyone is different. I know that Celexa is for depression and anxity, but have tried this myself and had a bad experience. With Prozac, I noticed that after about 3 weeks, I literaly woke up singing (instead of crying)
SSRI's have a bad rap, and lord knows I avoided them for years, but it has be come this mommas wee helper.
Good luck. Most here feel your pain

Inderal is not habit forming apparently; a colleague takes them for anxiety and prefers them to Valium.
I have been considering trying them myself...

effexor is one of the most effective but also has the most serious side effects and many cant handle it. It does something similar to opiates in an extremely weak way....
Lexapro and wellbutrin have worked for many as well.
For me, theres not one that works well enough to negate the crappy side effects I get. Just about all of them make me wanna sleep allll day.
And some anti-d's have some serious WD's - cymbalata,effexor,ssri's

BUT, some train your brain to think differently, and after a year or so you're fixed...
It is a chemical thing... it's not YOU.
I got "trained" out of anxiety after 10 months on paroxytine/aropax....
