ammonium vs. sodium hyroxide

i'd love someone wiser to educate me about the differeces between these substances:sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide (in terms of danger to the chemist and or availablilty) i know their both strong bases and i'll use whichever i ge to raise the ph of a mostly water soloution- i'll add slow in a pyrex contaior using gloves and glasses to be safe-anything else i should know???

Sodium hydroxide, commonly called "lye" is much stronger base than ammonium hydroxide.

Therefore, sodium hydroxide is a little more dangerous - if you put a granule of sodium hydroxide on your skin, it will cause burns. Ammonium hydroxide, you should keep it out of your eyes, but if you get some on your skin, it's not disasterous.

"Ammonia water" is available as a cleaning solution pretty much everywhere, and is like a 5% solution of ammonia in water, which, when it dissolves in water, forms ammonium hydroxide. Practically, you could not get PURE ammonium hydroxide, because it's really jsut a solution of the gas, ammonia, in water.

You CAN easily get pure sodium hydroxide, under various brand names, used for opening clogged drains, the most common in the US is "Red Devil" and it consists of almost pure sodium hydroxide in granule form.

Just a little pinch of sodium hydroxide dissolved in water will raise the pH to like 12 very easily, more would raise the pH higher.

It would probably be easier to work with sodium hydroxide.

For making crack, however, it's much quicker and easier (I've heard) to use ammonia water, but most people use baking soda for this. I think the quality is better with baking soda, but it's a little tricky to heat it just right.

Very good answer from Zoop. Zoop is correct on all counts save the last blurb on crack. It is much more difficult to get the right reaction from ammonia. With sodium carbonate you just add 1/3rd the maount [as cocaine hcl.] and add water cautiously until the point of total dissoultion. then heat just prior to bubbling and immediately place the vessel in a pot/tub, ect. of icewater while agitating vigorously with a wire seeding stick. Voila....crack in a minute flat!

i have tried several times no w to make my own rock with no success at all and i am not wasting anymore charlie trying im only talking about cooking enough for my own personal consumption has anyone got a quick and easy solution for me , and i mean quick and easy sincereley yours english

It's best left to the professionals.

Some people can do it with no problem, but to others (like myself) it's tricky.

Rachamin18 describes how to do it with baking soda, and it would appear that he's one of the people who is able to it. I never had any luck with baking soda, but I know some people who could get a nice rock - I watched them do it, but probably wouldn't be able to do it myself (this was like 9 years ago - I don't fuck with coke anymore).

A few times, though, I did make some rock, by just putting a few ml's of ammonia solution into a large spoon, and dropping a few bumps of coke into it, stirred around with a paper clip and it just rises up to the top and solidifies.

Worked fine. This might have been wasting some of my stuff, however, because although I got a rock from it, it seemed smaller than the amount of stuff I put in - but then again, that could've been because the cut was coming out when I freebased it.

Crack is in my opinion, THE worst drug out. Makes heroin look like chocolate milk, and I thank God that I never got into it - I did do coke for about a year, pretty heavy, but that was quite a while ago.

Literaly [and sadly], I have seen 11 year olds pick up the process after just watching a practiced hand do it one time! Here, I will dumb it down [please do not take offense at that figure of speech, it is simply meant as a figure of speech].


I] Take any quantity of cocaine. Measure it either by weight or by sight, and then place it into an appropriately sized cooking vessel. For example,with a half gram, use a metal soup ladle if you want. For an ounce, a very small metal cooking pot.

II] Take your sodium carbonate [baking soda] and measure out 1/3rd the total amount of your cocaine from the first step. Add that to the cooking vessel as well.

III] Take a quantiy of water and dropwise if using a half gram or gram, or small spoon sized if suing larger amounts, add water in tiny amounts to the cooking vessel. You only want to add just enough to make the coke/carbonate mixture totally dissolve.

IV] Get a pot of ice water, no matter what sized cooking vessel, a pot here is always wise. Set it nealry side by side with your heat source.

V] GENTLY heat the coke/carbonate solution. Observe carefully and as it approaches boil, immediately remove from heat and place the bottom [only the bottom] of the cooking vessel into the pot of ice water.

VI] As you place the bottom of the cooking vessel into the pot of ice water, take a piece of stiff wire, as you would find in a metal clothes hanger and actively stir the cooling freebase cocaine solution [the carbonate having converted the coke back into freebase ].

VII] As you continue the stirring, you will see the cocaine in the solution [visible as an oily yellowish slick] start to attach itself to the sire stirrer.

VIII] Continue until the piece of rock freebase coaine is no longer growing larger. Remove the piece of freebase coke rock and gently place it on a paper towel under a heat source [such as high wattage lightbulb in a lmp without a lampshade] Only let it dry until all the water is gone from the naked eye.


Then, have fun!

and You will lose a lil bit on the paper towel if has not completely hardened yet! So beware...

Get big spoon, add coke, add baking soda (1:3 ratio soda to coke) add water to cover it...
Put lighter underneath spoon until it starts to fizz... STOP heating. Add just a lil more water... put lighter back under spoon and cook until white crust turns to yellow oil... Remove heat. Use penny to collect oil together into a blob...it will harden onto penny. break rock off the penny and smoke it...

ANHYDROUS ammonia (waterless ammonia) is stronger than lye. You MUST know what you're doing EXACTLY when handling it. PM me for more details, if anyone needs them.

Yes, but the anhydrous ammonia is not really ammonium hydroxide, it's just plain NH3, ammonia. It you get some on you, besides being very cold, it will instantly combine with any water on your skin to form ammonium hydroxide and THEN you'll get a chemical burn.
