View Full Version : Tylenol Smell...?

This may be the weirdest questions I've ever asked, but I'm hoping some of our health care professional o-philes will have an answer: what causes a person to smell Tylenol after they take it?
I know the pill itself has no smell, but I swear...as soon as I take Tylenol and it starts kicking in, I get this sort of 'dusty' taste/smell, and its quite potent.
This only happens with Tylenol, no other pain-killers, and at doses higher than about 300 mg. I've had my liver tested, and its ticking along just fine.
Does this happen to anyone else? Or am I just weird?

You're just plain weird.:D j/k
I can't say that I experience the same symptoms as you from taking Tylenol.

It might be you're getting some minute traces of binder finding their way up the back of your throat. If you smell it, that could be perceived as either a funny smell or a funny taste... chalky, or dusty perhaps. Do you chew those tylenols?

umm, i know when i take vicodins or percacets i always get a certain sense in my throat and nose. i believe it is the tylenol since i taste it with both vicodin and percs. as funny as this is gonna sound, i have never taken tylenol by itself.

i know exactly what you are talking about. when i was taking a ton of vicodin, i would get that taste like 10-20 min after taking it. dont know what causes it, but its definitely the tylenol cause ive taken acetominophen by itself and had the same thing happen. i used to love that taste/smell cause i associated it with the vicodin high. now if i take it i hate that sensation.

OMG I thought I was the only one I've been asking people that use Vics and other APA containing drugs for years and they all have no idea what I'm talking about. I wonder why it happens.

Ha... yep, I know this sensation as well. I call it the "puzzle piece" smell, since it reminds me of the way old children's puzzle pieces smell. Sort of musty; I think those puzzles were made of Masonite.
But yeah, I have definitely gotten that sensation from taking large doses of Hydro.

If you're taking a mixed compound of Narctic/APAP you might want to try a CWE and see if that helps.
It's certainly worth it to keep that "liver ticking along just fine"

Do you have acid reflux disease?
Maybe that shit is irritating you stomach and it starts gurgling around in their and gets back into your throat or something.
Hell, I have chewed up 6 or 8 norcos at a clip and never had that happen once I got the stuff out of my teeth and washed down.
Fuck it though. . .ibuprofen works better anyway!

ha i now exactly what your talking about
when i take a big dose that has a lot of APAP in it, its like i can taste the APAP, or like im breathing it.
sounds weird i dunno..
I know exactly what they are talking about that tyenol smell, almost a taste. CWE works to take care of that. It's especially bad when taking like the hydro 7.5/650. yuck. just cwe and be done with it
I have hep c so really touchy about the liver. not touchy enough to stop opiates though:)

Yeah, I've definitely gotten it worse from the 7.5/650 hydros as well.
It's like tasting and breathing old puzzle pieces.
How about this, though: Try drinking rubbing alcohol. For the next day or two, you will exhale acetone (nail polish remover). Don't ask.

Glad to see I'm not the only one! Thanks for all the fun replies.
Yeah, I've always CWE'd when I knew I was going to take more than a few vics, even on the Norco's. Usually, I feel so good on those, I don't have to take more than a couple through the course of a day, so there's never been an issue with the smell/taste.
Its always when I'm out and just doing regular Tylenol in recommended doses. I know, Tylenol sucks ..but my stomach has demanded I take a break from ibuprofen.
Its all good, though. I'm with Skript on the slight 'buzz' that comes up. Kinda like you know its working when you smell it!
