By James H Austin: this book is great, thick and fat, scientific and readable, filled with quotes, direct experience, pharmacological data, and what appears to be deep and lengthy association with Zen practice and mysticism. James H Austin is currently employed as a professor in Northern Idaho. the book touches on discussion of many different complex interactions between pharmacology, brain function, addiction, state dependence that can be attributed to opioids. this book actually explains the brain surgery(more of a scarring ) that has been shown to relieve withdrawl, and even cause lengthy euphoric experience. While many would probably shy away or even RUN AWAY from this procedure one can find a few relations in this book of just how our bodies may actually create similiar permanent changes through the toxic natures of our own neurotransmitters, How opiates can cause neurogenesis, and How morphine plays an everyday role in the aquisition of motivational drive, memory re-call, state dependence, even mathematical thought. I have a feelin this person keeps a cool head, and would dissuade most people from the grasping nature of trying to control ones pharmacology to an obsessive degree. I also think that James H Austin would consider lengthy and deep education about opioids and pharmacology, psychology and human emotional interaction a very good adjunct to some sort of recovery program. And if not you can still read the book like me and have it change your life. Consider the taunting challenge of Ken Wilburs thought problem the pre-trans fallacy and match it with the information in Mr Austins book and the nature of addiction may momentarily slip away from you............................................... .................................................. .................................................. ........
