Moving down to Florida (WPB area) has been a fairly cool experience. I hate 'starting over,' but oh well. I recently picked up the local 'alternative' newspaper (with the back page ads)...which consisted mostly of ads re: methadone clinics. This means to me that there are a LOT of opiate-heads around here. But where the hell are they? This town is so 'family-oriented' and has such a low crime rate...etc...... that I just don't see there being a "cheesey side of town!" The people I talk to barely smoke weed... if they do, they are rich kids smoking KB & dro. Doesn't make much sense. Any thoughts?

It is around [my maternal grandmother lives in Delray Beach ] but you are much better off going down to Miami. Miami is where it is at for sure...

Mind you, I know nothing about Florida's scene but the your post made me remember the last time I was in Fl to visit my grandparents. They live about 45 minutes east of Tampa in a little place called Lakeland. Now this "Lake Land," is a little city with tons of old people. I like to call it, "Heaven's waiting room." As my grandfather was giving me the grand tour of Lakeland, we passed through a kind of seedy neighborhood where I had the opportunity to point out several prostitutes to my grandparents, wife and 1 year old daughter (although, I hope she wasn't paying attention... stay off the pole, honey, daddy loves you). At any rate, my grandparents were absolutely SHOCKED about this (mind you, these are die hard retired liberal social servants folks... they're not republitanical puritans in denial who refuse to aknowledge the existence of life's evils) and had no idea that their community had prostitutes. I pointed out that, much like the smoke/fire relationship that where there's hookers, there's likely lots of drugs, which rattled them even further. I didn't have the heart to explain to my grandmother that these hookers were likely not out trying to support their reefer habit when she said that she thought pot was legal and why would these poor girls go out and sell their bodies for a little, "grass." Grandma is so cute!

I suppose my point is that many people in these "cleaner," areas of Florida are likely in denial or just clueless. I mean, it's unlikely anyone living in Miami would bat an eye at a hooker blowing lines off a cop's nightstick on mainstreet at lunchtime in the business district, but in these smaller cities, people are just likely clueless as were my grandparents. I anticipate my next visit will not include a tour of the city.

I think like anywhere, Som, you have to fit the part to find the links. I've never been into any scene in the context of street buying or really even using a dealer. If I can't turn up what I need through friends or other safe sources, I just wont use. When I have had to find something off the street as it were, I've always gone to the hookers. It may cost you a little more initially but if you offer them their BJ price for having to do nothing more than do something they were going to do anyway, usually they'll set you right up. "You mean, I'll get my $20 and not have your smarmy pubes pushed up against my nose? Where do I sign up?" Usually, if you're respectful and straightforward, the hoes will help you.

The hoes, huh? God bless 'em! That is a very good point! That way one is less likely to get'jacked' by a street thug... I mean, hookers can be just as shady, but they still have that lil bit of sensitivity...it's in their nature! Good idea buddy!

When i got out of prison i moved to my grandmother's condo for a couple of monts. I later moved over to tampa for a couple of years so I have a bit of subjective expereince in the area...albeit very out of date.

When I first moved to both areas [and they ARE very different from each other] there was no heroin whatsoever. Most of the clients in methadone were there because of pill addictions. Coming from the South Bronx I was not even aware that a person could get on methadone without a heroin problem!

As for Miami, like all over Florida, it is very different tahn other parts of the nation. Almost all of the trade is in heavily black neighbourhoods. At that time, on the state's east coast, there was only limited trade in Miami...I was not about to go down there so soon after my release.

My gradnmother's late husband [alive at the time] was a recently retired phrmacist and pharmacy owner. Add to that the fact that my grandmother suffers from a genetic condition related to her bowles and you have the makings for quite some party!

I kept myself busy working 4 jobs [actually 5 if you include 2 branches of the same buisiness]. Still, I managed to run through their supply of Dilaudid and Demerol. My usage was no secret, being that I had just been relased from prison on drug charges! However, they really did not want to face it I suppose and let things be. I do not know how many of you are familiar with a community known as "King's Point" in Delray Beach but it is essentially 15,000 NYC elderly Jews. Now don't get me wrong, I love my people. I served in the Israeli Army , etc. and do not want to be misconstrued here but I was going out of my mind!!!

Finally I moved out and then over to Tampa. At that time, Tampa had virtually no heroin either [it did not explode until 95 ]. I knew quite alot of people in Tampa, from up here...still, no connections! I would fly up here every couple of months and by an NYC "brick" or two. I would pay more for the airfare than I would for a single brick!

Then, shortly after i had retruned in the post holiday season of 94/95, a friennd told me of a connection who was selling 300 dollar grams. Now that might sound like alot to some here but you have to remember that I gre up in the early 80s when a gram of China White [Se Asian #4] would sell, unadulterated, for 400 bucks! I took a look and it was a cocoa brown gram, one rock. I happily paid it!

Shortly after Tampa developed a retail scene of its won. 30 mg. dime bags were all the rage. Grams bottomed out at 200 to 210 per, still one rock [repress of course but who's counting?]. It was all because of Orlando. the Feds began relocating Puerto Ricans [from the isalnd] in the Federal Witness Relocation Program. Stupidly [but gratefully from my personal point of view] they began resettling all of them in the Orlando metro area! Most were deep in the drug trade. Orlando, being only less than 2 hours from Tampa by car, became Tamp's main supply center. Grams cost half of what they did in Tampa.

As for the poster recalling Lakeland...Lakeland of course is midway between Orlando and Tampa. Curiously, the city had alot of crack but very little retail heroin for some reason.

For the poster going to Disney, Greyhound runs pretty regular buses between Tamp and Orlando.

The thing is, Orlando is a spread out grid, not a real city per se...like Tampa or WPB. In Orlando you need to know somebody. In Tampa you need only go to the spot.

My methadone clinic is really strange. Most people are there because of lortabs or oxycodone. Talk about going from a monkey to a gorilla. They are mostly house frows or people whos doctors got busted. Maby 10% are from heroin mabey even less. Heroin is 30 dollars a bag where i am (1 /10th of a gram) . So for most in this area its too expensive to be a heroin addict. We have nurses priests accountants, even people that work on the space shuttle are at the clinic early in the morning to get there dose. A real melting pot.

To the OP, back a few years ago SWIM used to go down to that area and pick up roxys by the hundreds. It's definitely all around you, in fact south Florida, in general, has a good pharmie scene. At least you have it better off than we do up here in the panhandle. Here's there's DEFINITELY no H and the pharmies are slowly disappearing. It's pretty depressing :(
