I was watching good eats today and Alton mentioned that the eggplant's seeds contain alkaloids similar to nicotine and morphine. he said you had to drain the juice or the eggplant would taste like old-cigarette-flavored tonic water lol. any info on this morphine-like alkaloid?

I think it is more likely the seeds contain similar alkaloids as other plants in the solanum (nightshade) family. Nicotine is more likely then "morphine-like alkaloids"

Just my guess though...

Same old story.

Such and such a story about some alkaloid compound found in some common/legal/easy-to-get substance/plant/spice/etc. Then a few gullible types rush out, try it and either no effect or some slight placebo effect.

If there actually was anything in eggplant, we'd all be a bunch of eggplant eating motherfuckers. When I see the DEA investigatig supicious eggplant vendors on Ebay, then I might believe.

I think you're missing the point of this forum. also, morphine-like alkaloids could be useful as precursors in synths that could produce interesting chemicals. just like you can make oxymorphone from thebaine found in poppies or methamphetamine from pseudo/ephedrine in ephedra.
there are morphine-like peptides in milk but no one is suggesting that drinking milk gets you high, just as I wasn't suggesting you'd get high from eggplants.

I shouldn't have butted in,as I know NOTHING about this-or much else.

To be honest PG,I read your posts and you JL blog(and I enjoy them),but sometimes you seem so serious-I know not much laugths in "our thing"

I don't know,I guess I can relate to a LOT you write and don't like to think of you as miserable.

here something about its effects (from pubmed):

Crude alkaloidal fraction isolated from the leaves of Solanum melongena was screened for its effects on the central nervous system. It exhibited significant analgesic effect and some CNS depression but no anticonvulsant action. The analgesic effects were of non-narcotic type. LD50 was estimated to be higher than 1 g/kg i.p. in mice.

it contains solamargin and solasonin.

I just saw this episode tonight and thought I remembered something about eggplant from way back on this forum.
It reminded me of probably the best chef I ever worked with in my life. He was as knowledgeable with food to the same degree Mr. Alton is.

Anyhow getting to the point what I had learned was that tomatoes contain the same morphine-like alkaloids that eggplant contain.
Lycophene and Morphine with my frys please.

but it says, "analgesia was of the non-narcotic type"

doesn't sound that great.
