Can you beleive this shit. Didnt they already pass this law in california? Now there talking about passing it in MA, you wouldnt be allowed to smoke in a car even w/ the window down if there is some one under the age of 18 in the vehicle. Fuckin BS. I bet they would charge a 16 year old kid w/ this if s/he was driving doen the road by themselves smoking. WTF? Big brother must watch over us. FUCK!
-EDIT- Just heard the story, theres one version that would only make it illegal to smoke in a car w/ a child stuck in a car seat or under 5 years old. They plan on enforcing it by pulling over every car w/ a car seat and some one smoking. I bet this will be abused. I saw that guy smoking and thought I saw a car seat but I found drugs in his car... First fine is $25, second $100 so on and so forth.

I voted yes because my grandmother used to smoke like a MOTHERFUCKER with me in the car when I was a wee junky (5 years old or less) and I HATED the fucking smell of cigarette smoke.
Now I smoke a pack+ per day.
the bottom line: little kids (less than 10yrs old) shouldn't "have" to be exposed to cigarettes.

Anti-smoking laws piss me off. It's like this: I go to the bar, I'm gonna smoke, I'm walking the sidewalk downtown, I'm smoking, I go to your favorite resturaunt, I'm gonna smoke when I get done eating... if people (or their kids) don't like it they can go find some other air to breath. People that wear too damn much perfume or colange piss me off too (gives me a fucking headache) but you don't see me lobbying congress to outlaw body sprays. Shit, when I am smoking around non-smokers I am considerate enough to blow the smoke away from them and keep my cigarette/cigar under the table when I'm not hitting it... can you do that with people that stink? No, you can't. So until there's a law against people that give me headaches when I smell their piss poor excuse to cover up bad hygine I'm gonna bitch about non-smoking laws. Write me a ticket for smoking, I'll roll a cigarette with it and smoke it in front of your baby.

My mom and grandma always smoked around me and I didnt mind, they didnt blow it in my face and they always rolled the windows down, I think this is fuckin ridiculouse. Regaurdless of whether or not you think people should smoke around kids do you think the government should really be telling us if we can smoke in our own cars or houses just because kids are around?

I agree with what you're say SJ. It is crazy. However, there are people who don't have enough sense to not blow smoke in their kids face or put the windows down (my grandmother). These are people that need to be ticketed/cited for being fucking stupid.

I think any GOOD parent (key word good) would know that exposing your kids to 2nd hand smoke, of any kind, is bad. But to make it a crime, and turn someone into a criminal for it is just fucking outragous.
What about in the house also? Both parents smoke, after 5-10 years of that, it has to be alot worse then a car.
I'm a nonsmoker and all my friends smoke, when I wake up the next day I can still smell it on me.
The fact that the big baccy companies are now saying it's harmful, if not deadly but peeps keep on going, doesn't help the kids out much. :(

At first I wasn't sure, but now I'd say yes, because the child doesn't have a choice about his or her exposure to carcinogens when in the enclosed vehicle.
In response to Chemboy, I too think it's bullshit that you can no longer smoke in most bars. A bar which belongs to a friend of mine is losing customers due to a forced closure of an outdoor smoking area because it was within 25 feet of a city building.
Yet, shockingly enough, stores can be reprimanded for refusing to sell cigarettes to a pregnant woman over the age of 18 with I.D. A womb is a much more enclosed environment than a car, and the victim is at much greater risk. I can't believe I live in a country where it is illegal to smoke between 9 months and 18 years of age.

It just gives the police more reasons and excuses to pull you over and shake you down... "Oh, sorry, thought that 19 year old you were smoking in your car around looked alittle underage. By the way, any drugs or weapons in the vehicle I should know about?" Just one step closer to total control, and it's bullshit.
And I agree that people should not smoke around their children, that's a given. But the numbers are extremely exaggerated as to how harmful tabacco is to the lungs. Do you know what the second leading cause of lung cancer is (after tabacco use)? It's Radon gas that seeps up through the ground and into your home and is scentless and virtually spotless unless you specifically test for it. You figure about 1 in 7 people is a smoker right. How many smokers died of lung cancer that was caused by Radon gas seeping in through there basements for years and years and it just get's wrote off as a smoking related death just because the man in question was a smoker. It is also bullshit. I am in no way saying that smoking tabacco is healthy or safe in anyway, but the lung cancer stats are way off... I'm sure of it.

there are no valid scientific studies that prove a connection between second hand smoke and lung/heart disease. second hand smoke is no worse than the air you breathe walking down a city street. it's the parent's responsibility to raise their child the way they see fit, not the government. let the parents raise their children and the government can keep the fuck out of their business unless there is evidence of real abuse.

I have a daughter and I don't generally subject her to second hand smoke but I'll smoke in a car with windows down. I make it a point to direct my smoke away from everybody.
It's the widespread lack of common sense that makes law-makers think they have to enforce shit like this.
I wish people wouldn't be so fucking stupid but at the same time the laws are getting way out of control.
One of my best friends is a convicted sex offender because he had a 16 yr. old girlfriend when he was 18. They was really only a year and a couple months difference between their Birthdays.

Here in my state the legal age was dropped to 16 from 18 because there were so many stagetory cases coming to court. I'd be pissed if some 30 year old dude started messing with my 16 year old daughter though, I know that.

This is exactly the mentality that allows laws to exist that punish/take away freedoms of all due to the possibly irresponsible or stupid actions of a few. Personally I am tired of losing my freedoms on the excuse that a few stupid people abuse them. I'd much rather tolerate the so-called excesses of the so-called stupid then have everyone lose their/my freedoms. Enough of this big brother bullshit already. Damn, I sick of fucking do-gooder politicians looking for scapegoats...

In the US you're allowed to permanently mutilate a boy's genitals as a baby, and feed him poison from McDonalds his entire life, but not allowed to smoke near him? Get a grip folks. We live in a dangerous world and parents have to be allowed to do as they see fit.

same here with my stepfather....plus he wouldn't even roll the window down AT ALL...and my bro and I would be in the back seat on winding roads him getting car sick, me just getting POUNDING HEADACHES.....it sucked...
then I became a smoker, then I quit, then I started again....I quit again in 1999 for the last time cause I couldn't see myself being a paramedic that smoked.....
funny thing is the RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS ARE THE BIGGEST SMOKERS....it's weird...

They need to make perfume illegal to wear in public. I mean CHRIST. I choke faster when a chick walks past me filling the air with her horrible chemical flower scented fumes. Id rather have second hand smoke, thank you.

I could not agree more with the many gripes regarding children and the law and what parents do and don't do.
But, if some parent is stupid enough to put a McDonald's meal in front of their kids every night when they could provide a cheaper, healthlier meal for less, then it is the parent who is an ass.
And to do as they see fit. Well, who is to say what a fit parent is!
I guess I come from a totally different aspect as a nurse who once worked in pediatrics and in my view the rights of children and their health and well being comes before the rights of their parents!
Well, you can disagree about my point of view, but as a Mom and nurse, my kids always came first and I never smoked with them in the car or in my car and never in the house. Why should I inflict my bad habits and problems on them. Hence, my getting of opiates.
And I don't judge anyone else, but be responsible for your actions. Why should your kids have to breath in that cig smoke? It comes down to personal responsibility and if you cannot control your own life and are so deep in your addiction.....get some help and let someone else care for your kids until you get it together.
My kids never saw my drug abuse and they always had a roof over their head and a good meal in their tummy's before I ever spent my money on drugs.
I'm no tooting my own horn....Just my scruples and they way I chose to live. But think of those kids who see shit they shouldn't because not of the lack of laws but the lack of enforcement!
Would you call social services if you knew the kid next door was being physically abused, sexually abused, starved due to Mom and/or Dad's drug use? Or would you look the other way? It's their kids, their problem!
Sorry, but I am an advocate for kids all the way!
