View Full Version : White in the ghetto

I have a question. I do not understand, why are police allowed to search a person just for being white? If they find drugs, how does this hold up in court? During trial, do they write "probable cause: white guy in ghetto" or something?
From what I keep hearing, it sounds like some parts of the country, it is basically illegal to be white (segregation? Cops don't seem to like it when blacks are in certain areas either...)
But I also hear about how common it is to buy on the street in these areas. So I do not understand why people take the risk. I'm sure it's not easy to stash a bundle in the anus while sitting in the driver's seat. If a cop sees you and there is a 90% chance of being pulled over, then why do people do it? How do they get away with it?
I'd really appreciate anyone clarifying this issue at all. :)

The cops do it because they can!!

Obviously in court all cops have to say is "reasonable suspicion".It's like a magic spell.

the worst way to carry dope is walking, a cop can basically stop-and-search at will. the second worst way is in the car, but its barely worse than being on foot. the third worst is being in your house, although that doesn't invoke the magic invisible shield it has in the past.

and they don't just stop white people in the ghetto, they stop anyone they want. you just notice your own situation more. but if they only stopped white people in the ghetto, the arrest rate would plummet... as a numbers game, not racist, by the way.

From my experience, if they see well-off looking (you can define that as you wish) white guy ina predominatley black neighborhood especially if it is low income odds are they are looking to score becuase they figure why else would this white be doing around here....

What if it was a young white male (looks twenties, lets say) driving an old car? I mean one of those rusted things that are clearly worth under $1000

Yeah, that's why it's good to have a simple, easy-to-remember, story. Have a bible or a AA Big Book or something, say ur going to some meeting. Find an address near there: I'm always on my way to the Motorscooter shop, coffee shop u can't find, bogus address for AA meeting: know a sobriety date by heart, etc., etc.

Just have the story down. In the old days in Cali dope was in balloons. Now tar, no way, so I bring some balloons w/me, and take the couple seconds to wrap it up, then I can put it in mouth. We're up to no good, they know that, but we're often way down on their level of "cool busts" so if ur story is simple, good, and u stick to it, and they *don't* find dope, u can usually get away from'em after a bit of a hastle. Try to get them to find Jesus, that'll get rid of'em quick enough ;-)

Doesn't matter what you look like or drive or wear, you will be pulled over and or searched. end of story!

Yah maybe have a bible on the seat or something, say you are going to a church lmao. A black church. Find one in the area!

That's right: and have the story *simple* ready ahead of time and be polite, of course :-)

ANd dont make it sound like your telling a story. Wait for things to come up naturally in the questions the cop will no doubt be asking. Afterall you are an "undercover" drug addict. That's right. Two can play that game.

um DUCK?

I think he was being facetious...and really it doesn't make sense...

"lmao a black church"?

yeah, some good music has come out of black southern baptist churches...
better'n some places I was dragged to as a kid where people's lips were barely moving during worship "singing" or people almost falling asleep while standing - just from the boredom - drooling while the music played!

Yeah, I wasn't thinking. I'm just always in the habit, when I'm in the hood, of having a nearby coffeshop, AA meeting, Salvation Army, methadone clinic...*anything* so that if I'm jacked up, I don't get all tonguetied and gettem more suspicious than they already are...

Duck Feet,

You should come up to Vancouver Canada... it's not sooo far from Cali, and the H is cheap. Also, as far as I can tell, the war on drugs isn't waged very hard here. Finally, the H tends to be pure, as this is one of the major entry points in North America.

I guess u weren't around, or didn't see my post. I actually flew up there, got nailed my immigration, escorted back to U.S. side, sent home. I think the world of Vancouver, what I read about it, and I was really interested in their diamorphine maintenance trial (NAOMI). You guys got it right. They just had my first felony from a long time ago on their database. Hurt my feelings, but didn't change my view. Tough immigration, but I gotta hand it to'em, Vancouver seems to not come down hard on possesion by junkies like me, and at least is getting closer to making heroin available as an alternative maintnance program.

So thanks for offer, and I agree that u live in about the best place in N.America to by a heroin addict. I'd have to get new identity, or go thru long drawn out process to see if ministry would approve me getting in, and now that they have me down as trying to *sneak* in, I doubt I'd get much of a shot...

Awww, well shit.
The only other way - and this is getting hard - is to marry a Canadian. There are people who will do this for cash, but I don't know if it would work in your case...
Also: I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your writing style. Do you think you might have a book in you? Have you read "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien? An amazing book, but somewhat heavy... about the war. I'm afraid I'm getting too personal here.
Oh yeah, and drive across the Peace Arch border crossing at rush hour if you try it again.

I'll just wait and see on Canada. i do follow their heroin maintenance thing with interest, see what develops.

When I was young I wanted to write. But, like many, I confused the lifestyle with the work ethic that the few successful writers had. I got a couple of rejection slips from magazines, and did some writing here and there, but eventually found out the bars were full of writers...and painters...and musicians that were always accomplishing great feats in our heads, and had the costumes and tattoos to prove it, but again, lacked the fortitude to pay our dues by learning the craft. I was more like the guy in "The Lost Weekend." But anyway, nice thought.

I loved that book. didn't like his novel as much. Tim O'Brian is a great short-story writer. My favorite book of Vietnam was "Dispatches," which for some reason seemed to grab hold of my little piece of the war better, as I was there later, when we knew that it was a lost cause, while Tim was there in earlier days, when at least some of the people still believed. Even though Dispatches was by a reporter/writer for Esquire, it still caught the feel good of the damn place. So sad, seems like a repeat, now, no matter where on the fence on sits...

Best wishes

I wonder what people say when they're actually driving around for lawful activity. Visiting a friend or family member. Or just driving around the hood just for the sake of driving around the hood... I've known plenty of out-of-towners that would do that, not looking for drugs or anything.
