So heres my story in a nutshell
Went to the family doc for back pain, said it was low back and constant and dull with an occasional sharp pain when working(which I do alot of lifting and twisting)
He gave ma hydr---told him they werent working at all--he increased the dose told him still didnt help put me on percs and said h wanted to do an MRI
Did the MRI, said the percs were helping and the resulst were a slight protruded disc---he said he wanted me to go see a Neurologist and made the appoinment for me.
I go in next week to the neuroligist and Im curious if I can get some OC's or something like that instead of these crappie 5 mg percs
What do i tell the guy?
Cheers

At this point your best bet is probably an exagerated version of the truth. Search doctors appointment and pain managment or going to the doctor. There is a wealth of intfo here.
Also research signs and symptoms for your particular diagnosis. What level is the bulge at?
There is one thread in particular I am thinking of I will see if I can find the link. Are you willing to have the surgery if the neurologist suggests it? I'll get back with a link to the thread if I can find it. Best of luck!

Well, first things first...you've got to be ready to move up the chain slowly. Also, if he's even willing to do the pain management end of things, be ready to sign a contract.
After that, the best thing to do is be honest. Explain what the percs *do* help with, then explain what's leftover that needs attention. The more detailed you can be, the better.
For example, you might say something like: "The meds I'm on now take the edge off, but I have this lingering, dull, throbbing pain right here that doesn't go away, and intensifies before its time to take my next dose.."
Phrasing it that way may help you get something longer-acting, or stronger, etc..
Oh, one other thing they like to hear (mind you this is coming third-hand from someone I know who sees a neurologist) is that you're trying out non-narcotic solutions, too. Like if you have one of those exercise balls or something. You might mention doing exercises on something like that because at least 10% of your pain is going to be coming from muscles out of alignment.
Hope this helps. I'm by no means an expert, but these are some of the things I've heard from people in similar situations.
Best of luck!

If you are being sent to a neurologist, they may put you on a neorologic analgesic, like cymbalta, or even an old tricyclic anti depressent. That is what they did with me. With the initail acute injury, I was given percs, sent to neurologist, percs were removed, and I was given a neorologic analgesic. Of course, I said they didnt work, and after a month, I was back on the percs, then the next month I was on 10mg percs, then 15mg IR's, and then 20mg OC's. It took awhile to build up to the good meds.
You may get lucky and might end up on MScontin, fent, or OC's if they are cool enough, or deem it necessary, but most of the time you have to play the waiting game.
As flipside said, research the injury, find out the more common symptoms, and exagerate on them. As long as you dont over-exagerate, it could pay-off. Just dont go to the next appointment, and ask for oxycontin by name. Play ignorant. Doctors hate being told their business, and asking for a CII by name, especially Oxy, is asking to be scrutinized.
Good luck, and take care of your injury.

OC's are a strong possibility since you're already on Percocet. You just tell him/her that they're not controlling your pain and that you need a short-acting opiate (i.e. Dilaudid, Morphine) for break-thru/rescue pain, those times when your back is hurting espescially bad.

Now this new doc will already have the files from my other doc right?
I am only on the perc 5s and want to skip past 7.5 and 10s and get to the decent shit
Any advise on that one?
I've never gone the cp route(just a straight addict-give me smack doc),but with all docs you need a good bedside manner and do your homework.
If you put the work in you'll probably be rewarded-eventually.
Good Luck.

I would tell them the percs work, but dont last very long, and that you feel you need to take another dose before the next dose is due. But dont tell them you take more than prescribed, or that you take them early, as some doctors might get mad and cut you off for being a "drug seeker".
But as I posted earlier, dont say "my friend told I should ask for oxycontin", or "I heard about this drug called Oxycontin". Even if a doc is thinking of prescribing it, if you bring up the issue, they may not go that route. Its like if they come up with it, it is a good idea, but if you do, then you are a junky. If you want 'em that badly, rob a pharmacy (j/k).
It really depends on the doc. You have a 50/50 chance of getting OC. If not, you still may have a chance at getting
MS Contin or Duragesic.
My doc doesn't write for OC, but she writes for MS Contin and IR oxycodone.
ive been on otc meds and some prescrition meds, latley the pain has got worse so, i saw a doc, he scripted me for 30mg codeine :(, so next week i went and told him that it was strong enough but i wanted it to be longer lasting, he prescribed oxy contin:D
