DXM is not a well liked or respected drug among people that consider their fix to be "real drugs" more so than a drug found in cough syrups and other preps...yet they would be willing to drink cough syrup if it had their DOC in it. Also, funny as it may be, the big opiate fix used to be mainly found IN cough preps many many years ago. It just makes you more cool to be an opiate addict I guess.

The attitude now is more like "Your thirteen-year-old is drinking cough medicine to get high!!!!" Most of the media attention about DXM is just because they portray it like all the users are desperate kids and is therefore more a cause to be concerned. Plus... DXM bashing is just trendy nowadays

It's simply not true that the main source for opiates was found in cough syrups. Possibly true for the 12-16 category, but the majority of the world was using opiates in the form of powders and pills.

This is after the patent medicine era, of course, but it'd be wrong to call those "cough syrups" in any conventional sense, however. They have nothing more in common with cough syrups than laudanum does.

Anyway- I'm kinda glad propoxyphene is being taken off the market. If it's true, anyway; it's been talked about for a long time.

The medicine has a worse analgesic effect than aspirin. That's sad. Plus as far as opioids go, it's about as euphoric as dogshit, and way easier to OD on.

It's also the only drug I had to give myself a naloxone shot on.

maybe that particular brand is but dextropropoxyphene by itself (I'm almost 100% sure, I just saw some caps of it last summer) and with acetaminophen is still available here in the US and there is always darvocet and darvon. the racemic mixture is nothing to fear, except for the tylenol in darvocet that is, but l-propoxyphene isn't bad it's a mild antitussive and an NMDA antagonist. just need to remember when it's labeled propoxyphene it has half the opioid strength as dextropropoxyphene (100mg of dextropropoxyphene = 200mg propoxyphene).
I hear in the UK it is frowned upon to prescribe it anymore but some form of it is still out there. however, here in the USA we won't have to worry about it disappearing, it is heavily prescribed from minor aches and pains to moderate pain to antidiarrheal to antitussive it is here to stay. the worst thing about propox is that in higher doses it also acts as an anesthetic (actual I think it's stronger than lidocaine and some of the other crap they use) and that can cause problems with some peoples tickers (via cardiac membrane sodium channel blockage and increased PR, AH, HV, and QRS intervals).

i use to order dxm powder online i was heavy into dxm for a while until one time i did it and could barely breathe i stopped doing it after that. dxm sucks the big one, but it does FUCK YOU UP. in my opinion dxm fucks you up 100000x more then heroin, but the buzz/high is 1/1000th the quality.

Dextropropoxyphene was banned in the UK a couple of years back because of a few people dying from using it.
I have to disagree to a certain extent with Hammilton, in that I've always found dextro to be a rather effective painkiller - it is, after all, an opiate - and certainly far more effective than aspirin, which is only of any use if you happen to have inflammation somewhere.
And as for the high you can get from it, well, in my more opiate naive days, I DID get high on it, and in combination with tramadol, I got VERY VERY VERY VERY, GORGEOUSLY high on it.
So it's far from useless.
