View Full Version : Shrill use of "use the search engine"

Lately I have noticed that a lot of folks have jumped on the " use the search engine" bandwagon. Sometimes a shrill responce is called for, but most of the time a gentle referal to the search engine will have the desired effect. If someone repeatedly asks questions that have asked many times before without first using the search engine- then its time to jump on em.
I may just be a simple county junky, but it seems to me that a gentle approach to naive questions would encourage more people to participate.
Come on man, this post has already been gone over. UTSE before you make posts like this, jeezus.
j/k :)

I asked my dealer how much coke I should try, being as how I don't know much about coke. That fucker told me U.T.F.S.E.B.Y.A.D.A.I.Y.D.K.Y.R.M.F.S.B.F.F. ..... In acronym form, just like that too. So I asked what that meant and he told me Y.A.D.C.D.D.D.D.C.S.D.FF.F.F.E.D.D.DF..D.D.D..D. ..

I did use the search engine. I keep hitting "search engine" and all I get are hyper-religious instructions. I *knew* this site was rigged!

Search Engine: Long boring misinformation on methadone...I *knew* it. I just want this night to be over with so I can do my last shot, go up to moms, pretend I'm happy, then back on subs. Fuck. . hey bro, but today there was good waves, no shit, it was a picnic!

I use the search engine. The search enging is good. The issue isnt' with the search enging. its with the shrill responces.
Out in the world we are a discriminated against and society doesnt' seem to have much use for us. The squares either ignore us or treat us like shit. they send their thugs (cops) after us to make our lives as unpleasant as possible. I just think showing a little kindness to a fellow junky is a good thing.
People log on here to be around junkies who, suppossedly, will be less judgemental. Over the last few months there seems to be an increase in users attacking each other. That is not cool. its one thing coming down on a someone who is acting like a jackass. its a whole different thing mistreating the naive.
In simple terms. Search engine= cool. Being cruel or abusive= uncool.
Ps. if your next move is to attack my spelling or grammer. knock yourselves out.

pointy, I don't know if you've noticed, but the majority of the people coming in on their first day and asking these questions aren't staying around and becoming a part of the community--and answering their questions or NOT answering and stating UTSE....has NOT affected the outcome...
what I am saying is that most people doing this as a #1-10 of their first posts are not planning on sticking around anyway...and it's a drain on everyone here who could be answering a complex or more "urgent" topic for someone who will eventually "reciprocate" by how they are able to give back to a newby down the road...
kind of like teaching people to fish instead of just handing them the fish...
JMO: screw applying band-aids to a wound, let's teach them cpr and first aid instead....
I don't think most will dissagree with you Pointy. Besides, if it's something dumb just don't answer it. Or let DD police the shit, he does a good job of keepin us all inline.

There's definitely some kinds of posts that people should be smart and read the search engine. But sometimes I think its kinda good for topics to be re-posted to keep certain important things at the front of the forums and to get fresh perspectives from people who may not have answered those previous threads

Sure, plus, lets face it, it's just a new guy's way of saying see me, I'm here, I'm alive, I got questions. No big deal. A lot of time they are nervous about posting, and try to think up a question to break the ice,,,and then get *slammed* down. :-(

Yeah, I definitely agree with all of you guys. And like DF said, we were just messin round, jokin bout it. But I think the main point pointy is making is not to be an asshole to newbs. Just not really called for. I'm not innocent I'm sure, don't recal but I'm sure I've been an ass to a newb a time or two, but even if it's a dumb question it's probably better to keep the mouth shut than jump in and be an asshole to a newb. Tell them to use the search engine if you think it's warranted, but don't be an ass about it. Chances are they don't even understand the stupid UTSE acronym or any of the other 100 variations.
Just my opinion and I know it's all hippy sounding and that, but we really should try and treat each other good round here. Difference between joking amongst friends and people we know, and just flaming a newb because he came on an opiates board and asked a question about opiates.

Wait, what?
Whats this search engine thing you speak of?
Actually, yeah I'm fucking around, but whoever said that most people who just joined may not know of its existence on the board is probably right. I know I didn't at first.

the new guys that got a little snap will see it's a cool site even if they get slammed. They'll just want to hang around so they can slam somebody themselves. I like the ones who fight back anyway. I figure they'll make it. guys who need to much hugs and love are always crying anyway...

Screw hugs duck man, that dont do shit for a junkie. However, if my hands were broken, I might take it as a kindness if someone helped me get the dope in my arm. Then again, I'm persistent enough to use my feet if needed.

Oh yeah, we always find a way. And not to be too hardass about it. Sometimes a boy can just be so lowdown and useless feeling that a hug is definitely called for. gotta savem for special occasions tho. Some people need slammin just so they'll know they're alive ;-)

As somebody who asks many questions constantly i feel you are reffering to me ;)
BUT! A diffrent take. Even though they are in general the same questions if everybody just used the search after all the information was posted this would be more of a libary then a forum. I cant even count how many times i have seen a similiar question as to one i have seen before stir up a diferent conversation or response. As long as it doesnt get out of control.... so what?

When somone with 50 or so posts starts a thread that has been discussed multiple time they should be told to use the mother fucking search engine, and it is not imperative that anyone be nice or sensitive to their fucking situation. I dont think anyone is jumping on a stupid ass bandwagon, what the fuck, a use the search engine bandwagon? Come on give me a fucking break.

here's the deal: every few months this exact thread is posted (in different variants) and what we've come to find out is simple:
the base of knowledge for junkies is wide at the bottom and small at the top, like a pyramid. so as threads pass into the nether-regions of the board, into the nooks and crannies, the issues pop up again.
the irony is that OP could have utfse to just post something new in one of these old posts.
but I actually agree - we like newbies and want them to participate.... every few months the board gets territorial with newbies (usually from members that have only been here 3 months or so) and the rate of new membership seems to slow.
then someone posts this thread, people calm down, and more newbies start participating again.
point is, if you read a thread and don't have anything to add, fuck off.
let us mods be assholes (because we only do it when its necessary or when we're in WD)... normally we can just delete the thread and calmly point the newb in the right direction.

Wouldn't it be a fairly simple thing to add a definition of UTMFSE to the FAQ? I know I've seen several people who didn't understand the acronym. It would also cut down on the noobie bashing (if said noobies could be bothered to read the FAQ). I mean, aren't most boards laid out in a similar fashion? Most that I've seen are, to a degree, anyway. How about it bi11i? Right under the "don't be an asshole" portion, politely mention what UTMFSE means, maybe point out where it is, so there can be no confusion?
Just a thought.
I apologize in advance if this has been suggested before, cause I didn't UTFMSE to make sure. Anyway, yeah, its just nice to get well. Last night was a drag, once the weed and DXM wore off, I twitched and gagged and very nearly shat myself (in my fucking sleep, hows that for a drag). Luckily, I have the coolest mother in law in the world. SWIM got hooked up with a couple 'dones, and the world is now lovely again.

YES, I agree with YWO...
we should have "sticky" posts at the top of each and every forum stating essentially all the same things...
these are the rules...
these are bad behaviors
this will get you booed
this will get you boooooted off the board, etc..
once the finalized format is written it shouldn't be very time consuming to post it permanently to the tops of the forums...
does that make sense?
besides, pointy was just having his period anyway, he gets like that sometimes....
(j/k I can joke about that now cause I don't have those probs anymore, just w/d type probs, hahaha)
