I was wondering if being in a constant state of constipation for a long period of time would/could have any ill effects upon your GI tract, or anywhere else for that matter?
I know alot of deaths happen upon the porcelain lazy-Z-boy, from hearts giving out.
I've never been impacted (thank god - chop stick!!!) but just worried a little the other day thinking I haven't had a "easy go of it" in yrs.
Thanks.

Don't know. Truth is, that's real reason I always ended up at either real low dose, or totally getting off methadone, because it always happened to me, and always made life suck...

I don't know if this will help, but this article has a little information about some of the long-term effects of constipation, so maybe it will have something in it.

That's not a lot, but hopefully there will be at least something there that is helpful.

Great site regarding constipation applesauce.......What I recommend is taking a stool softener daily such as Colace also known as Docusate sodium or Docusate calcium daily and avoiding heavy greasy foods and increase your water intake. Constipation is just part of the opiate lifestyle and trying to go the same time everyday can also help.

While on extended release morph, I found that Collace didn't even touch the hardpack situation I had. I would try Collace and bulk forming fiber and eat a shit load of fresh fruit (oranges seem to be one of the best). Even then I was still dropping a couple of golf balls once or twice a week.
Sorry for the visuals. . .

Ive been that way now for 6 years (scince i started taking methadone). Meticmucil or fibercon work for me . At least i go every day when i take that stuff. still golfballs though but easier to squeeze out. Sometimes I will be in excruciating pain because its too big coming out(boy that sound gay). So bad I think my asshole fell out. A cell mate of mine in prison swore that if you slide a very small piece of soap up your ass you shit would come out alot easier.Never tried it though. Sounds logical though..... well ,somewhat.

Thanks Candy & Apple, but I was more worried about the physical side of it; tearing, ripping, etc. Sorry about the graphic image....
Just seems that passing rocks all the time would do damage, but I'm not up on how recuprative my colon is.:o
But you get the idea.

i'm always afraid if getting hemmorhoids or something. since we have started down the graphic road anyway, one thing that always worries me is some blood in the stool, i think it is the dryness that causes it sometimes. but the last thing i want is to push so hard i end up popping a blood vessel down there

Not sure about the long term effects alowishus, but as far as tearing/ripping...yes! It fucking sucked...rocks that were literally hard as frickin' cement balls. Docusate/Colace never helped, only thing that did was plain old fiber drinks/pills. Even they didn't really soften anything. Only reason I started taken em while on done was cause of the horrible panic inducing neasua I would get when things got backed up to the point where things can move temporarily "backwards" in the GI tract. From what I've read this induces severe neausea/vomiting if it happens at certain points in the GI. I can remember sitting on the bowl with the worst neausea I've ever had from anything trying to shit. When I finally did, the sickness would disappear in minutes. That's how I figured out what was causing it (and reading an article somewhere about it). And the worst part was one time I couldn't fight off the vomiting and once it started it would continue for minutes, even up to like 10 or 15 minutes until I could shit, while vomiting and panicking. I guess the whole panic thing is part of the response to things moving the wrong way by having nowhere else to go. That was my biggest (among several) reasons for coming off the clinic.
Sorry, I don't know the long term effects, but don't they say that high fiber diets are good for lessening the odds of colon problems/cancer?

It's good this is being brought up. I know as a sexy topic it really sucks, but it's been a huge part of my opiate life, and has caused me to take different paths. Truthfully, constipation is why I just *always* end up leaving methadone maintenance. There are other reasons, but that's always number one. I also have it on subutex, but it seems more manageable. Something DD said, reminded me of some things I've learned. There are two different facets to constipation. One is what I do *not* to fall behind a daily shit, and the other is what I do once that happens.
Somewhere in there I have to stop dope temporarily. On subs what I'll do is put off dosing until I shit. I like taking dose real early in morning, but it just seems impossible. Once I get behind I'll drink that green slime crap, I forget the name, and use fleet enemas and suppositories until I shit. then I take daily docusates, and like DD said, eat lots of fibre, and exercize, some kind of walk, or I swim, do *something*. Because when your dream *does* come true periodically, and you get all the opiates you want, this is what happens. I've got one bad hemahroid because of it, I'll probably have to get removed(they do a kind of rubber band thing around it until if falls off). the short acting opiates like heroin and shit, I can usually control or put off dosing until I shit. Methadone and subs I've never found a way. And I'm an active motherfucker. I way 200lbs, I'm six foot, swim every day, but this shit nails me every time I get back on methadone, and now subs. I find subs it don't happen at lower doses so much, so I'm hoping to stay down around 2mg daily, or find another way. I'm getting depressed talking about it. I'll run out of the good shit tomorrow, and be back on miserable subs, but I realize I haven't added anything positive to this topic. It's a bear, and we don't talk about it enough, since it's a large problem to steady opy users. but again, it's rare we have a steady enough supply of short acting opies for it to matter, so my experience--negative--is with the two legal ones, methadone or subutex.

Yeah, you can get some small ripping or tearing, but the biggest worry is hemmorhoids. Try to avoid laxatives. Drink mineral oil, eat prunes daily. I am not a fan of the Metamucil type brands, need to drink alot of water with those. Fiber con comes in a pill form or chewable tab? I think. Mineral oil really works if you can stand getting that shit down!
Just try not to bear down hard. I know it is easy for me to say, but avoid that....leads to hemmorhoids.

true true its like pavlov said ring the bell everytime you do it and don't do dope until, next thing you know you'll be ringing a bell, going to shit, and bringing the dope in with you because you know its happening.
oatmeal, raisin bran, lots and lots of water, salads, and omega-3 pills help (not all together!)
and thanks candy i didn't know bearing down caused the hemmies fuck that from now on

Yeah, obviously I can talk endlessly about just about any junky topic...but this one still floors me. All I know is what DD said, I just got to fucking *wait*, or I'll be sorry. Eventually my bod learns the score. I've cooked up, sucked up, and said, *now motherfucker, *shit* or no dope." My junky brain is a strong persuader, and while I'm sitting there will be going thru the list of all the reasons to just say fuck it, fix, and worry about it later.
Hint: When u r sitting around at night, nodding out and planning armed bank robberies and famous rock bands u r going to form, have a bag of mixed vegies and eat'em. You'll never rob the bank or start the band, but it'll soften yer stool.

I did want to say that there is no evidence that stool sitting in the colon for a long period causes a toxic effect. There are other problems it can cause, but no toxic effects. Your colon has a natural flora and would kill off any bacteria that might form. That natural flora is meant to be there and most likely would keep you from getting ill if you were constipated.
That is just my opinion!

Me too! Exactly! Fifth day---I think--off subs--them fuckers were like methadone, for constipation, and I wouldn't even allow myself the chickenshit hydro CWE as my "reward" until I took a dump this morning, first hard...then kaboom! Hahahaha....then Mom calls, says my kid brother is back from Argentina....so all is well in my world. well, not all *that* well, but still, longest I've been off either subs or methadone since June, and I'm just tickled. I don't mind chasing hydros, or even--god help us--badass mexican tar, but them fucking subs and methadone.
If I get sick, and run out of hydros, I'm sure I'll do a sub, but at least it's not like, *first* thing on my mind upon awakening....anyway, sure is nice to get a little relief from the "load..."

That is fantastic that it worked for you, it usually works by decreasing GI motility, creating constipation. They use it in IBS patients(Irritable Bowel Syndrome) where diarrhea is a constant problem. But, hey if it worked for you, that is great.
I just worked for a few years in the GI Lab or Gastrointestinal Lab where we always saw patients with these problems.
God, I have pretty much worked the gammet of the nursing world. From babies to emergencies, to bowel and liver problems. That about covers it all, I guess!

When someone talked about dying on the shitter, be aware that it is not from the turd itself, but from the vagal (nerve) being stimulated by the action of bearing down. It slows your heart rate & can actually stop an unwell heart. If you take a deep breath, hold it, then bear down, check your pulse during the process & you will see the resulting drop in rate. Just for infomation.
