I was entertaining the idea. Thing is he's not that bright with this sort of thing, and very paranoid about everything. I guess I shouldn't bother? He is there now and flying back in a few days. I didn't UTFSE, guess I should.

Paranoid and going through customs makes for a real bad day, give your buddy a break and don't even ask.

It depends what souvenirs you're looking for. I get the impression the posters before me assumed it was something very very illegal.
If you're talking about pills, it shouldn't be a problem. You can declare them at customs providing you have a script from a Mexican "doctor." The worst customs can do in that situation is to tell you "no."

I've never been to mexico but this doesnt seem to sit right with me, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. My impression is that many cops in mexico are corrupt and would love nothing more than to catch you with pills to bribe you and feed their family for a month. I doubt the worst they can do is "tell you no" if they think the prescription is a bullshit one. I doubt they arent savvy as to know what many, many people are trying to pull and how bullshit the narcotic prescriptions are....
That being said I dont think someone who isnt "in the know" has a very good chance of scoring anything really good...maybe some codeine or kpins, but all the people who seem to think they are gonna go down there and score a bunch of oxy etc. without knowing anyone have just fooled themselves...if it were that easy everyone would have moved TO mexico not out of it

From my experience scoring pills down south, there should be no legal complications involved. Some locals working the street will bring you into a doctor's office (which in many cases is nothing more than a barren room with a menu of drugs) and tell you what's available. They take your name and have a licensed doctor write you a prescription, then they take it to the pharmacy and bring your stuff back to you.
If you don't open the pill bottles and show customs your script, you can take up to 3 bottles. It took them about 15 minutes to validate mine, I'm assuming they actually called the doctor or something like that. I would think that, providing you had the script on you and it was legit, police would not hassle you. I've never had any trouble with the police there, but I am extremely wary of them.

This is true...the only opiates that are readily available are codeine and darvocet. I believe I saw tramadol there as well. They will tell you that the "Neo-Percodan" is Vicodin, even though it's propoxyphene, and that the Temgesic (buprenorphine) is morphine. From what the locals tell me Mexico lost its license to produce the good stuff long ago. You can still get alprazolam, valium, and a few barbs there, along with myriad amphetamines, with no problem.
