This is an interesting study done at U of Arkansas, about the action of some herbal supplements on detoxification enzymes. Check it out. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15974642&itool=iconabstr&query_hl=1
Does this mean that St. John's Wort induces enzyme activity or reduces? According to this it appears to be an induction. Could someone clarify? Jacky maybe? Now I have taken St. John's Wort concurrently with opiates (pods) for months on end, usually in the winter (I have a slight case of SAD at times) and have noticed it seemed to potentiate after two or three weeks of continuous supplementation. Interestingly, also St. John's Wort is a very potent anti-oxidant and effective anti-depressant, as all know this well. Paxil made me lose interest in sex so I discontinued that crap years ago and am so much better off since. That stuff had some funky withdrawal symptoms, too funky. I am to the point where I will refuse man-made chemicals, they do more harm than good in my experience. Except of course when needed for severe medical conditions, but most relatively healthy persons would be better of using a natural herbal remedy or mixture of herbs. Some intelligent life form, call it God, Universal Power, Great Spirit, or Creator endowed the earth with all the medicine man needs, even the Poppy. There is a natural remedy for every sickness or condition that are very effective and oftentimes underestimated and shown little respect by the Western medical practitioners who seem to only be interested in drugs which they can patent and exploit. I could go on about this for days. I am an avid herbalist, I know very little about how they work, but I can tell you that they do work for me. Also, check out the related articles link at the top of the page for further reading.
