a Vietnam war veteran about a year ago gave me his opinion about a few things ....I am finally posting his feelings/experiences...Louis was in portland, and the VA there put him on a bus to come see a cardiologist at the Boise VA, except that when he got to Boise they informed him that they didnt have a cardiologist on hand to treat him for a check-up on his pacemaker. so they sent him to St Lukes. who treated him. but when he had some problems a bit later the ST Lukes folks put him on an ambulance and sent him to the VA, same thing, the VA sends the guy back to ST Lukes.... you would think that instead of shuffling homeless Vets around on a greyhound bus they might just want to train some one at the VA a few things about pacemakers? This O'Conner guy is a homeless drinking fellow....but he is pretty nice, Lucid for the most part. I mean, how many drinks can a guy have before he is cut off from help from the VA? what is going on with a country that punishes old men for drinking? puts up 50$ for a bus ticket when all the guy needs is a checkup on a body part? I geuss I dont know the whole story, but a 45 minute conversation left me with the impression that this O'Conner guy was pretty cool, if a bit fucked up, down and out cool guy.

Somehow this story reminded me of the way they used to (and may still) treat opiate addicts in Australia's Northern Territory.

The NT Government gave them a bus ticket south (i.e. to Queensland, New South Wales, or South Australia.)

Isn't it nice when we are treated like trash by our own governments?

Sadder still, Jacky, when you consider this guy served his country is one of the most bitter wars of the last century. Surely he deserves more humane treatment than being shunted around on a bus?

If anybody has a the right to be a bit fucked up its a veteran of a wretched war like vietnam. I met a vietnam vet that was living in Vancouver when I went to my cousins wedding. Some of the stuff he was telling me was just to much to even take in.
