a casual freind of mine died a month ago of an overdose. Jacky B as some new him slipped into an overdose and never regained conciousness. I went to a benefit for him tonight at the Neurolux in Boise Idaho. there was live music of course, alcohol, and a benefit drive to stimulate action towards a heroin detox facility in that town. Boiseans have no access to methadone locally, or the whole state of Idaho for that matter. when I lived and used there I had to drive every week to utah to get take home methadone doses. At any rate his mother is working hard for a cause that started BEFORE her son died of a heroin overdose. I talked a little about my situation, being an addict to legal substances like poppy seeds etc, and a few of my experiences with detox programs. I think junkies need to know the truth about pharmacology, and about all the alternatives to dope that are out there. most people should just steer clear of the whole opiate using activity, but for the hardheads who will continue to use for whatever reason, having various alternatives to fall back on can be a literal lifesaver, beit a "quick fix" or a replacement therapy, having meds or herbal medications to quiet the crave or the side effects from withdrawl can keep a detoxing junkie away from the needle and the "hardstuff" at least for a few weeks. In many situations we are not talking about people with many options. how can a hard up junkie pay hundreds for buprenorphine every month? I found a way to kick the "hardstuff" using poppy seeds bought legally at commercial chain grocery stores, that was three years ago. I havnt used heroin in three fuckin years. I wish Jacky b's mom CHarlet the best. When I told her I was not clean, but off the heroin, she had sincere emotions regarding sharing the truth. the truth is what we need, and as many paths and alternatives as there are users..............

Christ, Jacky, I'm so sorry about your pal.

This is the sort of post I want to share with the activists in Australia - I only know some of the Brisbane crew, through having been involved in needle exchange in the mid-to-late 1990's, but there must be some sort of way to link users and users' groups all over the world, so that is the voices of many, rather than just a few, who are lobbying for change...

I beg your pardon, I guess I'm not thinking too clearly. But there is so much more that needs to be done for addicts - and nothing makes this clearer than the stories I hear from the United States. Sometimes I wonder if the "War on Drugs" is really nothing more than a war on the users themselves...

I personally hope that opiophile.org will become a forum for discussion between people other than using active junkies or junkies that have thrown in the towel. perhaps some type of obituary pages could be created etc. I am also hoping that in time people involved with private and institutional research on opiates may drop in and answer some questions for those who post them. the future of opioids is obviously heading in different directions. too many for me to keep up with. my own personal slant is researching novel opiate containing herbs, both ones that are used typically and plants that have yet to be investigated as toxic or edible species. I am working on some small articles , and informative links to empirical sources of data would help some understand issues in clearer format than I usually relate. the united states federal government a few years ago made a public statement that people communicating and relating information about drugs is a real viral outbreak, that it needs to be controlled. that people displaying or writing about drugs in general need to be controlled and possibly forced to take the new drug "vaccines" that are coming out on the market as I write. scary, and scientifically unsound. at any rate I know there are plenty of local type of movements taking place. a zine from england called "monkey" is one such publication that deals with regional issues relating primarily to heroin addiction. me and billi are going to make a point of expanding and diversifying some of the content of opiophile, while focusing on keepnig the open format of communication as the most important and unique feature of the website. all articles and posts, from pro and anti opiate stance parties are welcome. it is no joke that dope can be a killer hell, but opiates are also valued medications, entheogenic inebriants, and basic substances of human and animal physiology, not to mention prolific chemical compounds found in the natural world.

still in the works is a small zine outlining different approaches to kicking dope. a zine that outlines various uncontrolled opioid agonists that exist in many herbals available widespread across the various continents. this zine is going to be intended to reach those hopefully who arnt into the internet, are unaware of these alternative approaches, or so broke and despondant that they have no access to information. wether or not it will make any difference in someones life I dont know, but the inclusion of opiate subcultural ideas and artwork hopefully will reach some hardheads out there. copies of this zine will be circulated hopefully to different countries via our "network" with hopes that others will copy the material and distribute to those they feel would be interested. the last thing a down and out person is going to do is buy scant reading material, but perhaps a free copy of novel information will peak some interest.

just read this oldy but goody. I am newly registered old lurker and reading this mission statement literally brought a tear to my eye. I am petrified of posting about anything to the internet for fear of future consequences/ post post regret. But I will try to stifle that fear in order to share information which I beleive will prevent unnecessary suffering, and maybe save lives.

Most junkies dont have a half decent shot of dropping their habits without acesss to something like methadone or bupe. I went cold turkey after not having one day off heroin for 15 years, got clean but because i didnt have the option of going on the MMT, offcourse i relapsed. Methadone can be a life saver, the addiction to methadone in itself is much worse then heroin IMO but i think we can all agree that being addicted to something that is legal changes your situation completely.
