OK, I'm still kinda trippin out that this happened today, but I have to share the story just because I, like most people around here, I'm quite sure, have little faith in doctors (thanks to the DEA).

Let me set the stage for y'all. I went in to my one oclock appt at the wound care center, just like i do every week. I had taken my last perc about 8-9 hours previously, so I was just starting to feel ill. Eyes were watering, runny nose, etc. You know the drill. So the doc came in, started debriding the chronic wound on my leg. (The wound is so old, its had multiple birthdays, I just DON't heal)

He noticed that I was in a bit of discomfort and asked what was wrong. I was rather hesitant, but I figured what the hell, and told him I ran out of pills, and was feeling kind of crappy. He got this kinda serious look for a minute and said something along the lines of, "Call your pain doc, and see if he will refill the script even though its a bit early, or get an ok so I can write some till monday."

I called the PM doc, got voicemail, and left a message. Doc leaves the exam room for a minute, and comes back with a script for 30 perc 5's. Half the strength of what I normally take, but it just felt good, for a change, to be viewed as a person in pain, instead of a drug seeking junky.

The doc goes on to explain that under normal circumstances, thats not allowed, but since there is documentation blah blah blah, and he was performing what is, under the best of circumstances, a fairly painful procedure, he had enough documentation to cover his own ass with the medical board and DEA. Because the doc has always been right with me, I told him that if it was gonna get him in trouble, I'd just deal with the pain till Monday.

He said no, pain will only slow the healing, and its healing slow enough as is. He chuckled a bit and said don't worry, my ass is covered.

Sorry for rambling a little there, but I just thought I'd share a positive story about a doc. They aren't all bad. Although most would look at me, a long haired, tattooed guy, and think "junky" off the bat. I guess there are exceptions to everything, as I was legitimately in pain.

Good story. And take care of that wound you have. (unless you want to keep getting good pain meds).

That's refreshing to hear that one of our own was treated with compassion, and kindness instead of distrust and malice.:)

Nice to be validated isn't it? Does wonders for your whole state of mind..

It makes a change for someone in the medical profession to be human. Like Papa ver said, take care of that wound!!

Oh yeah, taking care of it, but I found out at my last visit that I have to have a skin graft.

Funniest part of it is, the stuff the doc wants to use (called Appligraf) is a skin substitute, made from neonatal foreskin)

The Appligraf costs approximately $900 per treatment. Next thing you know there's gonna be a black market in foreskin. Had a chuckle or three with the doc about this too. It is utterly amazing, he treats patients like a human being, AND has a sense of humor. Ain't it a shame more docs aren't like that?

Yeah, he's really a doc :P

I checked him out with the Nevada Medical Board.

It was a legitimate question though. I asked it myself, which is the reason I checked. He's the head of Hyperbaric Medicine at the local hospital.

Have they considered Hyperbaric therapy for that leg wound? Just wondering because it could be useful in a case such as yours with a wound that wound heal!

And I know that debridement and dressing changes can be rough. I am surprised they don't give you something extra for that when you go in, but then again you got all the rules of sedation and pain meds and you wouldn't be able to leave for a couple of hours or on your own.......

Hang in there and check out that therapy for your wound!

Man, that's really fucked up and it pisses me off.

I'm really glad to hear that you're getting treatment and all for your wound, but using baby foreskins is just fucked up and horrible. I'm an anti-circumcision activist so that just ain't cool that doctors are doing that. There are other sources of skin that don't involve mutilating a baby's dick!

People would be outraged if they used little girls' labias instead. There's no real difference, but people are culturized to accept this bullshit. If you don't believe me, watch this:

Sorry about this rant, but I feel very strongly about this. Watch the video if you think I'm nuts.
