OK, I'm still kinda trippin out that this happened today, but I have to share the story just because I, like most people around here, I'm quite sure, have little faith in doctors (thanks to the DEA).
Let me set the stage for y'all. I went in to my one oclock appt at the wound care center, just like i do every week. I had taken my last perc about 8-9 hours previously, so I was just starting to feel ill. Eyes were watering, runny nose, etc. You know the drill. So the doc came in, started debriding the chronic wound on my leg. (The wound is so old, its had multiple birthdays, I just DON't heal)
He noticed that I was in a bit of discomfort and asked what was wrong. I was rather hesitant, but I figured what the hell, and told him I ran out of pills, and was feeling kind of crappy. He got this kinda serious look for a minute and said something along the lines of, "Call your pain doc, and see if he will refill the script even though its a bit early, or get an ok so I can write some till monday."
I called the PM doc, got voicemail, and left a message. Doc leaves the exam room for a minute, and comes back with a script for 30 perc 5's. Half the strength of what I normally take, but it just felt good, for a change, to be viewed as a person in pain, instead of a drug seeking junky.
The doc goes on to explain that under normal circumstances, thats not allowed, but since there is documentation blah blah blah, and he was performing what is, under the best of circumstances, a fairly painful procedure, he had enough documentation to cover his own ass with the medical board and DEA. Because the doc has always been right with me, I told him that if it was gonna get him in trouble, I'd just deal with the pain till Monday.
He said no, pain will only slow the healing, and its healing slow enough as is. He chuckled a bit and said don't worry, my ass is covered.
Sorry for rambling a little there, but I just thought I'd share a positive story about a doc. They aren't all bad. Although most would look at me, a long haired, tattooed guy, and think "junky" off the bat. I guess there are exceptions to everything, as I was legitimately in pain.
