Magnetic Needles?

Just wondering if anyone knows if your average 28g insulin needle is magnetic. I drop one on the floor and it took half an hour to find. Just want to know for the future is all.

No, it's not. It's stainless steel and is non ferrous. (It should not be ferrous atleast. There are different grades of stainless and it's a long explanation, but no .. for medicinal anything the stainless used should not be ferrous).

see i figured they were because most pin are magnetic and sowing needles and such....oh well. Thanks for the answer. You can delete this thread if you like but maybe it will be of use to someone in the future. Who knows.

OK, I thought perhaps I had a fau pax (sp?) with my jargon, but I sill stand by my original post. I made this post 3 hours ago stating I would edit it later to clarify. I don't know why I'm getting so technical with it, maybe just because there are a lot of misconceptions about stainless steel .... But here's why I answered like I did.

The stainless alloy used (ideal) for hypodermic needles is referred to as Austenitic stainless. Typically an AISI grade of 315-316 will be used in medical components that are used subcutaneously because they are comprised of rather high levels of chromium and nickel, in addition to iron. As such these grades are almost impermeable to corrosion. Some grades include copper, and nitrogen, and etc ... like I said, lots of different grades and possibilities. But as such, these alloys are non-magnetic.

There are a lot of different grades and classifications of stainless depending on what that specific alloy is composed of. Ferrous is (but) one of the classifications of certain stainless grades which are compromised primarily of low levels of chromium and iron and have very low (non existent) levels of carbon and nickel.

Anyways, if you look up stainless steel in wikipedia or other places including your chemistry book they will proclaim that stainless steel is a ferrous alloy. That is true so long as you are using the term ferrous to refer to an alloy with iron in it (Fe, periodic table. Hence Ferrous.). However, if you are talking specifically about stainless steel and grades of stainless steel, the steel used for hypodermic needles is not referred to as ferrous because that is a sub-category of a stainless steel classification.

So yeah, if you try to investigate "stainless steel" via an encyclopedia or something it's going to tell you that stainless steel is infact ferrous. And that is true, but it is also not true within the context that I was using. So hence my clarification.

I would however be very interested to hear from anyone if they did have a particular hypodermic needle that was magnetic, and where you got it from. I would cringe to think that government officials would put such low quality stainless steel out into the hands of the public .. but being that it's the government and they don't care about junkies I wouldn't put it past them. (Don’t take this as I mean to imply that magnetic stainless steel is “low quality” it is not always. It is used in different applications and not relivant here. But a magnetic anything used for medical purposes would be “low quality”. Dangerously so.)
