What exactly is Tramadol and what does it do?

for the best definition go to opioids.com and look up the various articles about tramadol. I have heard it described as a phenyl-piperadine analouge of codeine, but I may be misquoting something there.....I know that tramadol and effexor are very close in stucture, that both are addictive physically and mentally...with tramadol maybe being a little less addictive in the tolerance area. tramadol is sold as a pain reliever, effexor as an antideppressant. I have taken both of these drugs for months at a time seperate of each other. tramadol is great for treating chronic pain for some people with mild to moderate pain. some of the articles on opioids.com point to tramadols effects on the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, mainly weak inhibition of dopamine and serotonin reuptake...which means a rise of both chemicals in the bloodstream........................I like to take tramadol for daily pain and avoid codeine if I can now.....I have used tramadol to come off of drugs like morphine and methadone,I used under 10 grams of tramadol to kick morphine....................I like some of the effects of tramadol, but to get a good high I would have to fortify a mixture of other opioids/herbs with tramadol . I think that tramadol would make a good maintenance drug.

Marijuana & Tramadol is supposed to be a good mix according to some experience reports at erowid.org

I've used Tramadol 150mg SR's (slow release), 200mg SR's and the straight 50mg ones.
I found the straight 50mg ones to be the best but because of our stupid pharmaceutical governing body they do not allow for authority scripts (scripts which provide at least a month's supply) for them here. You can only get 60 tablets of either the slow release ones or straight 50mg ones. Where as you can get 100 x Panadeine Forte (same as Tylenol 3's) with 2 repeats making the total amount of 300. And Tramadol has been proven to have less abuse potential than codeine. I concur. Codeine is much more easier to abuse than Tramadol. Although a good tramadol effect is much better than codeine however don't expect them to last if you use everyday. Even at prescribed therapeutic levels. Tramadol also gave me more nausea and itchies then codeine. While it can be a bit stronger then codeine when you first start taking it (at doses of 100-200mg). I still think it is a crappy drug alongside propoxyphene.

I do not like Tramadol. My brain doesn't seem to like anything that effects norepinephrine and tramadol has a slight action on this. Like effexor it made my depression worse. I'm fine with most anti-depressants in the SSRI class. I don't take any anti-depressants anymore, my psych. may provide pain management doses of tricyclics if I ever need them though. But they aren't the type of drugs I really would like to take. Especially since I'm on OxyContin 10mg CR 2-3 times a day.

I view Tramadol like I view Vioxx and some other newer drugs. There is not enough data to show their effectiveness and all possible side effects. Where as Codeine has been used in pharmaceutical form for over 100 years and as an alkaloid in Opium for centuries.

I've taken tramadol, 50mg. I thought it was dumb. At first, you think you might be high, but realize, your not ( in my case anyhow, I'm more of a 2 80 a day oc girl) I took tramadol when I was trying to detox myself, I took 10 a day for 4 days and that's all I took. It did help with the withdrawl. I wouldn't recommend them for please use, but if there's nothing else around, take them.I wasn't sick on them. Everybody's body is different. In hospitalized detox unit, they gave us all tramadol, not 10 a day though! and they weened us down to one on the 5th day and set us free, after I left i stopped with another guy I met there to score...So it didn't work for long term rehab for me....

So there you go. For recreational use maybe, for Chronic Pain they suck & for Detox they are ok.

Tramadol is not an opiate. It is thought to bind to the same receptors as opiates in the brain and inhibit the reuptake of epinephrine and norepinephrine, thereby giving an analgesic effect. It is said to produce dependency similiar to that of Codeine.

I would imagine that Tramadol would not produce the effects most of us desire as it is not an opiate. While it will control pain well and is the drug of choice used by docs for those of us who admit to a dependency to opiates or are in a recovery status.

I personally have never felt anything from Tramadol except for a reduction in pain.
