http://www.dfdems.com/hydroxyzine.htm

Theres the link, the proof, and there are a bunch of other google sources out there....and it actually does work in my case!

For those to lazy to click the link heres the quick rundown:

Hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax)

Class: Antihistamine.

Actions: Antiemetic, antihistamine, antianxiety, potentiates analgesic effects of narcotics and related agents.

Indications: To potentiate the effects of narcotics and synthetic narcotics, nausea and vomiting, anxiety reactions.

Contraindications: Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug.

Precautions: Orthostatic hypotension, analgesic dosages should be reduced when used with Hydroxyzine, urinary retention.

Side Effects: Drowsiness.

Dosage: 50-100 mg.

Neat, huh. I get it as an antihistimine, and it helps me sleep sometimes too.
Apparently according to some other sites, it REALLY does an interaction with Demerol! But with codeine it defenitely works.

Vistaril is always what they gave me in the hospital to detox with. I thought it was like a really weak benzo or something, thanks for the info

A lot of antihistamines potentiate opiates. Benadryl is one example.

I have to chime in here. I did the Hydroxyzine thing with my opiates and all it contributed was drowsiness for me. I did it once and never again. Some people might like the drowsy feeling with opiates but I prefer to be energetic. I get A lot done when I'm opiated. I usually don't sleep much and lack of sleep for me ADDS to the euphoria!!!

It pissed me off when I slept through my high and woke up without much of a buzz left. I know we're all wired differently and everybody gets different results from things but since I had an experience with this one I thought I'd post a reply.

I think the word "potentiate" is misleading. It will not make the opiate's(or opiod's) affinity to opiate receptors any stronger. It adds to the effects by it's sedating effect, it's affinity for the gabba receptors. It will make you feel more sedated, and that is all. Adding the stronger of the histamine-blockers (this is one of many) is not much different then adding a benzo to the mix... Although sometimes a good antihistamine will knock you on your ass quicker than a benzo. If you want to potentiate opiates you need to identify the enzyme(s) in the liver that breaks it down, then create something to inhibit that enzyme, which is obviously no small endeavor.
