I am very sensitive to opiate-induced nausea and vomiting. Especially when it sneaks up on me the morning after taking a higher than normal dose, spacing doses to close together, eating too much volatile food with other irritating things on top of higher than normal doses, etc....

Please use this thread as a master collection-point for all information on how to reduce, elimintate, and moderate nausea/vomiting related to opiates.

Obviously, marijuana is a great option. And there's Phenergan (Promethazine) which is relatively easy to get from docs to treat nausea -- which has the added benefit of potentiating opiates!

"Dramamine" is really just a slightly different version of Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) which does help slightly with nausea but usually not very well. It does potentiate opiates, as well. But it'll make you tired, oftentimes.

There are many other options out there.....not just things you can take with opiates, as the above, but ways you can plan out your opiate use, what/when you eat, and all sorts of other things that I am sure can help with this. So, please -- share your own thoughts, knowledge, tips & tricks on combatting this most unpleasant of opiate side effects!

Well I don't have much to add, but when I just know that I'm going to get sick from doing too much I will portion my meals out on a timeblock, like every hour or every two hours I eat a little. That helps tremendously because the only times I ever puke are when I eat a "normal" amount of food and then it creeps up on me later. Like I do a lot of a given substance, feel great, eat a lot, go to sleep ... wake up to make a run for the bathroom. I also live off coca cola when I'm feeling nausious, probably something to do with living in South America so much. I think coke helps me a lot. Not smoking when you're feeling nauseous is also very wise.

Somehow I came across a bottle of 100 Meclezine pills a while back and I take one of those as you would Dramamine. They work great for combatting nausea. They aren't controlled but also not OTC so you should be able to buy them from an OP I would think.

I love coming here to opiophile.org when I'm opiated but Ironically I get nauseous from reading these fine print threads after a while. Meclezine takes care of that very well so lately I've been taking one because I know I'm going to want to come on here and read about what's going on when I have my knod on.

There are no side effects from it for me either. I think piperazines like Meclezine are actually stimulants rather than depressants but I don't feel any effects from them except that I won't get nauseous.

That's what I use and hope this helps.

Ya like savage said- lay down with dim lighting. Oh- and put out the cigarette- I don't always puke when I smoke, but I'm ALWAYS smoking a cigarette right before I puke.

Mix up some Jell-O but don't put it in the fridge... just add ice to cool it a lil' and drink it. The gelatin or something calms the stomach. I've used this on the rugrats and helps calm their bellies most of the time. Probably hard to drink much more after a good arrangement tho, heh. Hope you find something that helps. Take care!!

I don't smoke tobacco anyway, so that's not an issue for me, but it's a good suggestion for others.

Also, meclizine (Dramamine II) definitely works better than regular Dramamine (chemical name Dimenhydrinate, which is basically Diphenhydramine AKA benadryl with one water molecule added in a dumb-ass attempt to create a "time release"). I keep it handy often.

However, Phenergan (Promethazine) works even better. Especially for opiate nausea. In fact, oftentimes in hospitals for nausea-sensitive people a painkiller will be intravenously administered alongside a small dose of Phenergan. Phenergan also comes in suppository form for when you can't keep a pill down long enough to absorb it -- plus, suppositories absorb faster and more efficiently than pills.

However, rather than just throwing other pills at the problem, I am hoping for tips on dosing, timing, and other behavioral modifications that can help......me, since I tend to puke first thing in the morning, I almost always take a significantly lower dose (and a lower proportion of time-release meds, preferring the instant-release stuff that will wear off during sleep rather than lasting until close to wake time) around bedtime.

I think this has to do with opiates building up in the system during sleep, rather than being metabolized at full speed as they are while awake.

Could it be eating too much before going to sleep? I know everybody else on the planet enjoys eating, I do not. I think it's a complete waste of time, I eat to live rather than the other way around. I rarely eat before I go to sleep because I hate all that food sitting in my stomach and when I'm doin high doses of something it always results in my puking.

Don't know if this is applicable to your situation either, but when I've partied too much I always make sure to drink plenty of Gatorade. If I don't and I go to sleep I manage to become dehydrated and that results in my puking as well.

Meclezine is sold OTC in the US.

I drink lots of water instead. Gatorade gets its unique flavor edge from "Glycerol Ester of Wood Rosin" (basically a soap-like oil from wood, which is used to polish violins and other wood-based musical instruments) so I tend not to trust it when my stomach is iffy.....

I tend to avoid eating, of course, when in doubt......but I have to stay healthy and eat properly if I want to keep my conditions in check!
