Hi Alice, you listen to my kind of music. I love music from the late 60's, early 70's. Oops telling my age. I'm listening to White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane "One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small and the ones that mother gives you don't do anything at all. Go ask Alice when she's 10 ft. tall." My favorite-listen to it every day.

I kind of like old acoustic delta blues these last few years, by just about anybody...used to be hard to get hold of...just on vinyl records (before cd's and internet) so that's one good thing, now, I can just get Inet radio and find a blues station...

I don't know if anyone here is a fan of (hed)pe but i have gotten my hands on their new album "New World Orphans" that is due out tomorrow and I must say it is incredible. Jahred is one of the most talented fuckin singers out there today. He is able to sound hardcore on one song, punk on another, gangster as shit on the next, and end it with a lil bit of reggae. I suggest everyone who has ever heard of (hed)pe to give this album a listen, you won't be dissapointed. Also, if you have never heard of them before I suggest giving this album a listen. Their songs have meaning and they speak the truth about a lot of issues, i.e. the Illuminati, Free Masonry, the fucked up US Government, the middle class, etc.

Seriously though they are so versatile, they do punk, hip hop, reggae, hardcore, trash, rock, whatever. Give them a listen.

Currently listening to "Renegade" from New World Orphans.

Herb Alpert - "Rise" (1979 A&M Records)

Ye olde smooth funk-jazz joint that for some reason always reminds me of past memories of Las Vegas drunken adventures internally played back visually in my mind in slow motion; cruising down the strip in my friends' low rider wearing a pink ridiculous pimp hat; skateboarding booze irie stylie and falling face-bound in front of the Flamingo (nicely); finding an old moldy Subway sandwich underneath the bed of someone who a few buddies and I decided to lift up in order to fling somebody off of; the list goes on, and all in all good times for sure.

Girl Anachronism - The Dresden Dolls

You can tell
from the scars on my arms
and cracks in my hips
and the dents in my car
and the blisters on my lips
that I'm not the carefullest of girls

You can tell
from the glass on teh floor
and the strings that are breaking
and I keep on breaking more
and it looks like I am shaking
but it's just the temperature
and then again
if it were any colder I could disengage
if I were any older I could act my age
but I don't think that you'd believe me
it's not the way I"m meant to be
it's just the way the operation made me

and you can tell
from the state of my room
that they let me out too soon
and the pills that I ate
came a couple years too late
and I've got some issues to work through
there I go again
pretending to be you
make-believing
that I have a soul beneath the surface
trying to convince you
it was accidentally on purpose

I am not so serious
this passion is a plagiarism
I might join yoru century
but only on a rare occasion
I was taken out
before the labor pains set in and now
behold the world's worst accident
I am the girl anachronism

And you can tell
by the red in my eyes
and the bruises on my thights
and the knots in my hair
and the bathtub full of flies
that I"m not right now at all
there I go again
pretending that I'll fall
don't call the doctors
because they've seen it all before
they'll just say
let her crash and burn, she'll learn
the attention just encourages her

and you can tell
from the full-body cast
that I'm sorry that I asked
though you did everything you could
like any decent person would
but I might be catching so don't touch
you'll start believing you're immune to gravity and stuff
don't get me wet
because the bandages will all come off

and you can tell
from the smoke at the stake
that the current state is critical
well it is the little things, for instance:
in the time it takes to break it she can make up ten excuses;
please excuse her for the day, it's just the way the medication makes her

I don't necessarily believe there is a cure for this
so I might join your century but only as a doubtful guest
I was too precarious removed as a Caesarian
behold the world's worst accident
I am the girl anachronism.

ah interesting..surprised to see another Dolls fan on here..considering i just posted

it's hillarious, but i repeat - worast song on the album!
that being said, she has progressed as a vocalist & i do love some of the tracks on there..

Currently listening to "Wandering Star" from Portishead's 1994 debut release - the 'Dummy' LP - of which I have been listening to quite a bit lately; a classic album in many ways and one that appeals to fans of all sorts of different styles and genres of music.

Next up after listening to the entire first Portishead LP, I'm not sure either to follow it up with the second eponymously named Portishead album which was released in 1997, or switch gears and go in an entirely different direction. Who knows! I'll let cha'll funk chiplets know in due time.

^^^^ loved portishead, and that whole early-mid 90s 'trip-hop' scene- tricky's first few albums, massive attack, everything but the girl, etc. great music to listen to when opiophiling:cool:

Indeed NYC; that particular time period was ripe with creativity in chill back downtempo 'Trip Hop' that was not only new but also accessible to a somewhat broader audience than usual in retrospect, and thus even to this day alot of the music created by not only Portishead but the other artists you mentioned still resonates with quality that seems to age nicely.

I switched things up and am listening to Flying Lotus' sophomore LP 'Los Angeles' which was released last year on Warp Records; the LP's artwork is actually what my avatar currently is in case anyone was wondering what the hell that picture is of. I actually might have responded back in this thread about listening to this album quite recently but I cannot remember - nevertheless, it is already a classic : trust me! If you are into downtempo and love groundbreaking music, there is a little slice o' real estate on your music shelf that is being reserved for this album, even if you don't know it yet!

'Los Angeles' is just one of those instrumental albums that is just one big cohesive unit; a work of beauty, if you can find it at your local shop - it is actually hard to find near San Francisco for some reason - pick it up! It contains elements of downtempo, funk, soul, jazz, IDM, hip hop, magic and spice, and is a full on mostly all-beat affair.

An Opiophile must for any music fan with an open mind and a penchant for listening to choice cuts.

Out of a scale of uno to ocho, I give this album a HOSS OCHO!

Low Down - Boz Scaggs

I don't care what anyone says, "Low Down" is an AM radio funk classic! Complete with funky bassline, shopping cart horn peeps, 70's style supporting organ grinder and the like, I actually own 2 copies of it on cassette, 3 on vinyl and who the hell knows what else.

I've gotten a lot of guff about this stance over the years but I digress - "Choice Cut".

Morrissey - "Sunny" My Early Burglary Years (1998 Reprise Records)

Love the Smiths, always have - and of course, as such, I love Morrissey's solo work as well. "Sunny" is the lead track off of the 1998 Reprise Morrissey B-Side compilation 'My Early Burglary Years', and not only does it start the comp off nicely, the track itself contains some interesting opiated language :

"They're not forgiving you
And you're not even wrong
With your jean belt wrapped around
Your arm - oh Sunny - my heart
Goes out to you
And with the needle pressed on to
Tight skin
Sunny I cry when I see
Where it's taking you
I'm here - I won't move ..."

Actually, this seemingly B-Side compilation has generally gotten only lukewarm reviews at best and essentially has been written off as a commodity suitable for only those that own all of Moz's other proper releases, however I would argue that this collection is actually a nicely rounded affair that would fare well with any Morrissey fan. Almost all of the songs on this compilation are must-listens for any and all Morrissey fans; perhaps not the most stand out music he's released, but beautiful in a deep meaningful way. In particular, I really like how the track order flows, so to whomever was in charge of that, a virtual hat tip to thee, ye.

Finally, any Morrissey fan that does not already know should know that his new album 'Years Of Refusal' will be released in a few weeks on February 16th; the lead single "I've Thrown My Arms Around Paris" is available on iTunes now and I really dig it - the whole album, of course, has been leaked though, too, and although I could surely track it down quickly within the underbelly of the web, I've decided to once again let my old school and obsessive qualities remain in control as I'll wait until it is officially released to buy it physically and listen to it then. Call me silly, stupid, old school or obsessive - it's all gravy status.

Ahh... musical obession - yes.

End Moraine by Sparta

This is your history
You made what you will be
Facts are of no concern
They upset your story
The past is what we learn
It upholds your glory
Revisionist history

I want glaciers to scrape
I want to level this place
Everyone in it can go

The truth will tear this ground
Slowly melted down
Revisionist History

What you're taught
Free to forget
You're supposed to know
Learn on your own

It's exposed, End moraine
Funnel down, See with your own eyes
Simple talk, End moraine
Simple thought
And total loyalty
They'll build armies
In excuse for explorers
Know with your own eyes
Feel with our own hands

Holy fuck, I've got all the Beatles' songs from all the albums in one folder and I do a random play thing to listen to 8 hours of straight fad-four.
Well I never really tweaked the sound system I have hooked up......
I always had 5.1 but I just switched to Dolby Pro Logic II in the hardware decoder. :D

Now I've loved the Beatles since I was a kid and heard these songs at least a thousand times but now w/ this set up I'm hearing things in the music I'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE.

This is fucking wild man. Of course once they just became a studio band they could do shit that they didn't have to worry about replaying live.

As a child I knew
that the stars could only get brighter
then we would get closer,
get closer.

As a child I knew
that the stars could only get brighter
that we could get closer
leaving this darkness behind.

Now that I'm older
the stars shed light upon my face
but when I find myself alone,
find myself alone.

Now that I'm older
the stars shed light upon my face
but when I find myself alone
I feel like I, I am blind.

I wish the stars could shine now
for they are closer, they are near
but they will not present my presence,
they will not present my presence.

I wish the light could shine now
for it is closer, it is near
but it will not present my presence
and it makes my past and future painfully clear.

To hear you now
to see you now
I can look outside myself
I must examine my breath
I look inside.

To see you now
to hear you now
I can look outside myself
I must examine my breath
and look inside
because I feel blind.

Groove Armada - "Save My Soul" [2007 Strictly Rhythm (US Release)]

New school melodic take on the old West Coast electro-breakdancing beats of the 1980's, this UK duo turned out a 'fun' yet kinda all over the place LP when it released 'Soundboy Rock' in 2007; coolioso factor is that is has an awesome 16-bit art cover that I want to find a poster of. All in all, though, I really like the album and it is definitely a fun summertime driving album and also an LP that is keen to listen to in the colder months to remind the mind of the warmer aforementioned times.

Here is the URL to take you to the song on YouTube; put on your Adidas suit on and grab out the cardboard for some headspins y'all!

The cover folds out and reveals an entire town scene of dancing robots and naked drunk people getting stoned, 16-bit stylie; this little pic doesn't do the entire art justice.

LCD Soundsystem- 'disco Infiltrator'

^ Word up on LCD Soundsystem and the entire DFA label as a whole; I started buying their 12" pressings back whenever they first came out and it's good to hear both the artist and label are still kicking some ass these days. Right when many thought they had the LCD/DFA sound pinned down, last year they released a slew of solid redefining dancefloor and forward pressing gems that rocked from NYC to London, San Francisco and all the way back around again.

Choice material, mate.

^ hell yeah james murphy is the man- DFA has done a LOT to revive the club scene here in nyc- lots of cheap/free dfa-talent nights loaded with incredible artists (not always to mine/everyone's liking, which is what makes some of the parties so good, as you mentioned = surprise in these dull predictable days) - mmm time to rewind my ipod thanks

but first some lightning seeds- 'life of riley' ; )

Thank you! I've been trying to figure out the name of that song. Is that the song he's singing in Small's(Frank's club)?

And i've been listening to "Cool" by Anthony Hamilton.

Also "Old Enough" by Raconteurs feat. Ashley Monroe and Ricky Skaggs

The Bug - "Angry (Featuring Tippa Irie)" London Zoo LP [2008 Ninja Tune]

Future dancehall-dubstep London madness; MC Tippa Irie sings & speaks the truth about a lot that has been going down in the world lately, and for some reason tonight I have kind of been in a rare venting mood style, thus, this song is fitting my mental stature currently nicely.

It should be noted that the producer - 'The Bug' - is a bloke named Kevin Martin that is from the aforementioned London, UK, and he has created a hell of an album in "London Zoo" - the album from which this track comes from. It is an album that serves not only serious tones and such, but can also be extremely fun to blast even when in a good mood too. It's style is mainly future dancehall/dubstep/grime/unexplainable stylie, but if you are into underground stuff this is a good one.

Plus, it's on Ninja Tune which is a timeless outfit of a label, so you know it's good if you're into this kind of thing. Cheers.
