Me too: just got DF myself by Townes...it's kind of like hearing Bob Dylan do one of the songs all the other people made famous...reminds me of hearing "Old '55" or "Jersey Girl" by Tom Waits, rather than by the pop artists who used his material...lot of good songwriters, it's always good to hear the original...Carmelita's another song I like hearing original version...especially when I'm blue....

I dunno if you have heard it or not, DF, but you gotta hear Monster Magnet's "Spine of God" album; it's the album they did just before they started making it big, so it's still fairly underground, and it's one of the most drug-addled, dirtiest, trippy, metall-ish, pure-evil wickedest albums of all time. I used to listen to it drunk and wired outta my gourd on cocaine back in the day, and it's also great smacked out to the hilt. I 'spose it's also good for recovering junkies on replacement meds, too, haha

It's just a fuckin' great, monstrous record. In fact, the liner notes have a huge discalimer: "It's A Drug Thing, You Wouldn't Understand". Yeah, baby..........

Oh, and here's Josh's answer to anyone who misses Nick Olivery from Queens Of The Stone Age..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C70owQtnju8&feature=related

Funny shit! :D

I have to admit though...i did seem to miss the fucker myself when he got dumped by QOTSA(read:Josh)

and here's just one of the reasons why i did miss him too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LoXRmwdY8s&feature=related

He did have his moments, even though he was one vulgar MoFo according to a lot of folks who've worked/collaborated with him

But yeah - Josh is QOTSA...as simple as that.
And sadly they aren't as exciting anymore either

And sadly they aren't as exciting anymore either

Also sadly - I'd have to agree w/ that.
When I heard Songs for the Deaf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_for_the_Deaf) it was the best music I'd heard in yrs. Not just one song BUT the whole record.
Of course, maybe Dave Grohl had a little to do w/ that...?

Litening to SIXX A.M. - Pray For Me....
She lights a candle, but she doesn't know why.
She wants to save me, but i'm barely alive.
My soul is thirsty. I just wanna get high.
Make her go away.

[Pre-Chorus]
Now i'm hitting the wall and she begs me to quit,
And she drags me to church but i'm scared to commit,
And i'm loosing my mind 'cause she hides all my shit.
She wont go away.

[Chorus]
And all I ask of her is
Pray for me,
'Cause I don't want to
Pray for me,
If you love me.
Cross your heart and hope that I wont die before the best day of my life.
Just pray for me tonight.

[Verse 2]
I dragged myself out of the bed that she made,
And I escape her in a black motercade
She's pushing bibles and a clear bill of health.
I can't make her go away.

[Pre-Chorus]
Now i'm hitting the wall and she begs me to quit,
And she drags me to church but i'm scared to commit,
And i'm loosing my mind 'cause she hides all my shit.
She wont go away.

[Chorus]
And all I ask of her is
Pray for me,
'Cause I don't want to
Pray for me,
If you love me.
Cross your heart and hope that I don't die before the best day of my life.
Just pray for me tonight.

[Electric Solo]

[Final Pre-Chorus and Chorus Combo]
Now i'm hitting the wall and she begs me to quit,
And she drags me to church but i'm scared to commit,
And i'm loosing my mind 'cause she hides all my shit.
And all I ask of her is
Pray for me,

I'm watching the video to Halcyon (by orbital) -- the original version which isn't as famous as Halcyon & on & on. I think the latter is better, but the music video for the original song is entertaining.

It's a portrayal of their mother's experiences (she's portrayed as a housewife doing various odd things in her kitchen) while high on Halcion.

Owls - I want the blindingly cute to confide in me

Owls is an indie-ish/progressive rock band from 1999ish.. Tim Kinsella (lead singer), brother to Mike Kinsella (drummer), with Victor Villareal (AWESOME guitarist.. the main reason I love this band so much) and Sam Zurick. They only have about 10 songs out for this band, but they have a multitude of other bands.. Cap'n Jazz being the first, then Joan of Arc (indie-ish with many changing members), American Football (Amazing soft indie-ish with mike and a couple others), Owls, then Make Believe (crazy futuristic insane sounding), Ghosts & Vodka (amazing instrumental music.. WOW.. all I gotta say), then Friend/Enemy (just one cd with a ton of different people), then Owen (mike kinsella + acoustic guitar).. there are a couple more, but that's the gist of it.

They're from Chicago and they have been a huge influence on bands since they started in the 80's.. I've gotten to love them, some of their music (esp. victor villareal in Owls) leaves you breathless.

speaking of orbital's halcyon video, i have an old VHS tape of that old show AMP, MTV's electronica video show. it's brilliant. esp those videos with art from run wrake (i think it was for future sound of london and howie b). that stuff reminds me of something ethereal and childlike. i can't put my finger on it, but it kinda reminds me of being a kid at my grandmother's house looking at all the tin and porceline trinkets, knick-knacks, and toys from before and around WWII. like wind-up toys and those russian nested matryoshka dolls. all that mixed with tripping acid. i never actually tripped acid as a kid (as far as i can remember), but sometimes i think being a kid is like you're on acid all the time. i'm rambling...

We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

We've know each other for so long
Your heart's been aching
But you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it

And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Repeat Chorus

Give you up, give you up
Give you up, give you up
Never gonna give,
Never gonna give, give you up
Never gonna give,
Never gonna give, give you up

Last four lines repeated

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand

Chorus times three

Rick Astley is a musical genius. He was so ahead of his time, it'll take society a good 30 years before he is appreciated. Much like any fine wine or cheese, I believe Mr. Astley (I'd say 32 years before he's SIR Richard Astley) is using the ten minute breaks he gets from bagging groceries to write songs that are going to blow us away. I can just picture when he comes home to his 1 bedroom apartment with a bag of Chinese take-out, he fires up the Casio and tape recorder and gets to laying down some tasty chops, playing along with the Samba tempo. Or maybe Rhumba. Anyone who has anything bad to say about Sir Richard answers to me!!

Bad Habit - The Dresden Dolls

Biting keeps your words at bay
Tending to the sores that stay
Happiness is just a gash away
When I open a familiar scar
Pain goes shooting like a star
Comfort hasn't failed to follow so far.

And you might say it's self-indulgent
You might say it's self-destructive
But, you see, it's more productive
Than if I were to be healthy.

And pens and penknives take the blame
Crane my neck and scratch my name
But the ugly marks
Are worth the momentary gain
When I jab a sharpened object in
Choirs of angels seem to sing
Hymns of hate in memorandum.

And you might say it's self-indulgent
And you might say it's self-destructive
But, you see, it's more productive
Than if I were to be happy.

And sappy songs about sex and cheating
Bland accounts of two lovers meeting
Make me want to give mankind a beating.

And you might say it's self-destructive
But, you see, I'd kick the bucket
Sixty times before I'd kick the habit.

And as the skin rips off I cherish the revolting thought
That even if I quit
There's not a chance in hell I'd stop
And anyone can see the signs
Mittens in the summertime
Thank you for your pity, you are too kind.

And you might say it's self-inflicted
But you see that's contradictive
Why on earth would anyone practice self destruction?

And pain opinions are sitcom feeding
They don't know that their minds are teething
Makes me want to give mankind a beating.

I've tried bandages and sinking
I've tried gloves and even thinking
I've tried vaseline
I've tried everything
And no-one cares if your back is bleeding
They're concerned with their hair receding
Looking back it was all maltreating
Every thought that occurred misleading.

Makes me want to give myself a beating.

Are You Ten Years Ago - Tegan and Sara

If you're taken I am yours
I'm up and doing circles
I'm taken, I'm yours
I'm up and doing circles

I collapse, I might stay out longer
Than I left the light on for you
Then if you show, you show
If you show, you show

When I feel like this
When I get so into myself
I lose track of where I'm going

And lose track of how to get going again
I feel myself slowing down
Feel myself turning around, is this taken?

When I feel like this
When I get so sick of myself
Where are you going now without me?

And not knowing then that we're slowing down
You've got to turn that around
And tell me that I'm taken, tell me if I'm yours

You collapse, the pressure of this life is so
You can't be held accountable
If you go, you go
If you go, you go

When you act like this
When you get so sick of yourself
The whole world falls away and since I feel

Like I have only missed
The feeling that I'm here again
The feeling that I'm clear again, I'm not taken

When you act like this
When you get so into yourself
I lose sight of common goals
And letting go so I can be all alone

Feel myself going slow
Feel myself letting go
Not taken, not feeling like I'm yours

I'm taken, I am yours
I'm up and doing circles
I'm taken, I am yours
I'm up and doing circles

I collapse, this life looks like a sentence though
A constant game of falling short
If you know, you know
If you know, you know

When I feel like this
When I'm just so sick
Of feeling less than perfect
Is it right for me?

I never fight to see if coming clean would get to me
I feel myself holding back
I feel the pressure, it's finally back, I'm taken

When you feel like this
When you saw it all come crashing down
Subtle but not underground

I was there, I saw the signs, I saw unfair
And so I write to you through other means
I let myself finally feel taken like I was yours

If you're taken I am yours
I'm up and doing circles
I'm taken, I am yours
I'm up and doing circles

I collapse

James Brown "Can't Stand It" from Make it Funky - The Big Payback: 1971-1975

That is still the funkiest song I've ever encountered. So funky you can smell it.

The best part that I've never gotten tired of on that particular version is when James bosses around Maceo, and then Maceo just flat lays it out on the sax. I was fortunate to see Maceo Parker sit in with a jazz band out of brooklyn (MMW) at a concert in vegas a few years ago. I still have the entire video feed from that show on my other pc. The Maceo years are my favorite James Brown time period. Good stuff.

Stinky, I saw you listed Poe. She is amazing in so many ways. Have you read the book her brother wrote that goes along with her cd "Haunted"?

Oh and I have Juno Reactor on right now

House of Leaves to me was the biggest waste of time. A few of my friends were all about it, so I decided to pick it up and give it a read. I read all 300 some-odd pages of it. I don't know why I felt compelled to finish it, but I did. Haunted was a good album, though.

'I'm Sick of You'

By The Stooges (ofcourse )

(check out Ron playing bass on that song - he played it like a rhythm guitar - killere song - you won't find it on any of the albums i think it's either a Funhouse or Raw power outtake)

One of the best Stooges songs
