"Oblivion" by Mastodon. The whole "Crack The Skye" album, for that matter. It's awesome. I don't know why I didn't get into these guys sooner. Pretty much any band that tours with Tool turns out to be badass. When I went to see Tool, it was Isis that opened for them.

"Blue Rondo A La Turk" ~ The Dave Brubeck Quartet (Actually Listening to the entire "Time Out" CD ATM. Very nice, laid-back and smooth Jazz from one of the great ensembles.)
This is great to absorb if you're into compound meters {5/4, 7/8 etc...} or even if it's a foreign concept to you. Lots of folks tend to think compound time signatures lend themselves to complex melodies and structures. This album shows just how melodic and even outwardly simplistic in structure they can be. Especially when you've got Brubeck behind the wheel. He's definitely one-of-a-kind!

All of the time. This happens with entire Genre's with me for short busrts. Lately I have been into a lot of Noise and Folky Indie/Singer Songwriter (Kevin Devine, Slowreader, Old Canes, Elliott Smith, etc) but for the most part I'm more of a Black Metal and Punk type guy.

The production and arrangements on that album are amazing. They just sound so huge. It's nice to know that at least some bands are still into making original, creative, awesome music. Case in point: Turn on the radio. You'll most likely hear something along the lines of:
"I'm gettin' drunk all night,
I'm gettin' drunk all day,
I'm gettin' drunk all night,
I'm gettin' drunk all day."
It's just garbage! It's hard to find good original music now. But bands like Mastodon, and John Fahey(who is amazing, by the way) kind of give musicians like myself hope that there is a chance I could be heard, even in this age of downloading and the cookie cutter recycled shit that is so common nowadays.

Yeah I feel you. I've given up on the radio to the point where the only things I will listen to is the local University station and NPR. I don't even know what most popular modern rock sounds like and I'm afraid to guess. As a fellow musician I completely agree with what you said as well. Nowadays it is harder than it ever has been to become a big, rich and ultra-famous rock star but thanks to the Internet it has never been easier to expose your music to a wide audience. As long as your music is original and you are in it for the love of your art it is very possible to gain a dedicated audience.
Anyway, back on track I am listening to the 40th Anniversary edition of "In The Court of the Crimson King". So tight! King Crimson is one of the greatest groups ever. If anyone's a fan of KC I recommend this 40th anniversary disc since it has a lot of cool alternate takes and mixes on it.

"So Rare" ~ Tommy Dorsey
Listening to the entire "Golden Hits" collection. Very old mono recordings that have been remastered. Not a bad job but you still can't hear the drums. Still, if you're into Swing this is closest any of us today will get to sitting in a fancy club seeing these guys do their thing! All too soon it's over. It was almost finished when I started typing, so now it's on to...
"I Sing The Body Electric" ~ Weather Report
This is the album that stands out as Weather Report's most unique - to me as least. I really dig the last three tracks which were recorded live in Tokyo I believe.

The songs on that list by Shudder are all from the High Art movie soundtrack. I love that damned movie so much. It's about heroin addicts, but it's so much more than that to me. I think of it as a love story. Anyway, I love it. Great soundtrack IMO because it's got that opium-den / surreal / ethereal quality to it that's great to relax / chill out to.

Thanks! Yeah, I like a lot of genres of music, but I especially like 80's new wave. I find it interesting because it seems like a lot of members of the board do too, either original new wave or contemporary bands with a new wave sound.
All of my sisters were in their middle / late teens in the 80s, so this is the stuff I remember playing in the house growing up. I remember I used to love to "borrow" my youngest sister's Joan Jett and the Blackheart's album. Not sure what name it was, but it's the one that had "Bad Reputation" on it, and on the cover Joan Jet was wearing this hot pink top thing with a black leather jacket and punk hair-do or something like that. And my middle sister loved Journey, so I remember those albums too.
I remember loving the song "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics and just loving Annie Lennox and her androgenous look. I remember I'd sing along, but I was so young I couldn't sing "Sweet dreams are made of these." I couldn't make the "th" sound for some reason, so I'd end up saying "Sweet dreams are made of dees."
Ah, childhood....

The "Live at the BBC" CD gives you the chance to hear just how good these guys were back then without a bunch of screaming in the background. You can clearly pick out all four instruments as well as the the vocals. These recordings are great.
The BBC and Abbey Road Studios were always ahead of their time for recording and mastering technique. Having George Martin around never hurts either. I recommend this to any one who's a Beatles fan.

The new Rancid CD -Let the dominoes fall-
Most of the songs are about the war in one way or another.
Here's a good one...
Lulu
Where the middle
Class breaks up
The working class
Better wake up
When America was dreaming
Some pigs stole our country
Lulu stands by her family
With harmony and history
There's two kinds of stories
Either comedy or tragedy
Lulu works all day long
She goes 9 to 5 just
To stay alive
She'll do anything just
To walk the line
Ain't no time to wine and dine
Her war time now in the USA
Her husband goes far away
Afghanistan to Iraq
Her husband now
Ain't comin' back
America the beautiful
That's what the sign said
And I welcome every single one
Cause I want them all to stay
And I'll travel and I'll travel
Til my very last day
Through the New York harbor
To the San Francisco bay

Black Devil - "H" Friend*
(variation - most releases under project name "Black Devil Disco Club")
Originally released in 1978, Black Devil's "Disco Club" is an extremely rare disco masterpiece, an epic journey into the deepest electronic disco.
The record is credited to Junior Claristidge and Joachim Sherylee, pseudonyms of two french library writers Bernard Fevre and Jacky Giordano, respectively. It was made manually in a recording studio in the suburbs of Paris using synths and occasional tape loops and a drummer. No midi or computers.
- Discogs (http://www.discogs.com/)
*from the album "Disco Club (http://www.discogs.com/Black-Devil-Disco-Club/master/15061)" released on RCA 1978 "far ahead of it's time..a milestone in history of disco" ; re-released on Rephlex (label co-founded by Aphex Twin & Grant Wilson-Claridge) on several formats / editions in 2004

Not Fair - Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You
Oh he treats me with respect
He says he loves me all the time
He calls me 15 times a day
He likes to make sure that I'm fine
You know I've never met a man
who's made me feel quite so secure
He's not like all them other boys
They're all so dumb and immature
There's just one thing
that's getting in the way
When we go up to bed
you're just no good
Its such a shame
I look into your eyes
I want to get to know you
And then you make this noise
and its apparent it's all over
It's not fair
And I think you're really mean
I think you're really mean
I think you're really mean
Oh you're supposed to care
But you never make me scream
You never make me scream
Oh it's not fair
And it's really not ok
It's really not ok
It's really not ok
Oh you're supposed to care
But all you do is take
Yeah all you do is take
Oh I lie here
in the wet patch
In the middle of the bed
I'm feeling pretty
damn hard done by
I spent ages giving head
Then I remember
all the nice things
that you ever said to me
Maybe I'm just overreacting
maybe you're the one for me
There's just one thing
that's getting in the way
When we go up to bed
you're just no good
It's such a shame
I look into your eyes
I want to get to know you
And then you make this noise
and it's apparent it's all over
It's not fair
And I think you're really mean
I think you're really mean
I think you're really mean
Oh you're supposed to care
But you never make me scream
You never make me scream
Oh it's not fair
And it's really not ok
It's really not ok
It's really not ok
Oh you're supposed to care
But all you do is take
Yeah all you do is take
There's just one thing
that's getting in the way
When we go up to bed
you're just no good
It's such a shame
I look into your eyes
I want to get to know you
And then you make this noise

I think you're really mean
I think you're really mean

You never make me scream

It's really not ok
It's really not ok

This shit really isn't fair. It's been a little over three and a half years now, but I've always hated this. Men can be so selfish, especially gay men. I'm willing to admit that I'm getting to the point in my life where I want to "scream" again. Got to get a guy first. Uggg. And no Real Doll jokes please ;-)

Fuck You - Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You
Look inside
Look inside
Your tiny mind
Then look a bit harder
Cos we're so uninspired
So sick and tired
Of all
The hatred you harbour
So you say
It's not okay to be gay
Well I think
You're just evil
You're just some racist
Who can't tie my laces
You're point of view
Is medieval
Fuck you, fuck you
Very, very much
Cos we hate
What you do
And we hate
Your whole crew
So please
Don't stay in touch
Fuck you, fuck you
Very, very much
Cos your words
Don't translate
And it's getting
Quite late
So please
Don't stay in touch
Do you get
Do you get
A little kick out
Of being
Small minded
You want to be
Like your father
His approval
You're after
Well that's not how
You'll find it
Do you
Do you really enjoy
Living a life
That's so hateful
Cos there's a hole
Where your soul
Should be
You're losing
Control of it
And it's really
Distasteful
Fuck you, fuck you
Very, very much
Cos we hate
What you do
And we hate
Your whole crew
So please
Don't stay in touch
Fuck you, fuck you
Very, very much
Cos your words
Don't translate
And it's getting
Quite late
So please
Don't stay in touch
You say
You think we
Need to go to war
Well, you're already in one
Cause it's people like you
Who need to get slew
No one wants your opinion
Fuck you, fuck you
Very, very much
Cos we hate
What you do
And we hate
Your whole crew
So please
Don't stay in touch
Fuck you, fuck you

was my feelgood music, you know thinking about the ups
& downs of relationships etc,.
i especially like 'Jism':
If she'd have known
She'd have shown me
I need to taste her pain
For encouragement
If she'd have known
She'd have shown me
I need to taste her pain
For accomplishment
See, I can only take it out on you
There's no-one else I can trust
See, I can only take it out on you
There's no-one else but us around
You hide these things so well
There's no finding
You hide these things so well
There's no finding, no finding
These runs into the blue
There are no edges
How do I know where you are now?
These paper cuts
Need those gravel grind
Need those pictures to wake me
Give up the drugs
Take the power I offer
Oh the deeper I go
The further I fall
The more I know
The tighter your grip around me...

Not into rap much but "Deja Vu" -Off Eminem's new and best one -Relapse-
Good song for when your feeling down....

Thanks for the recommendation. I love Johnny Cash and he did a good job with that cover.
I've been listening to a lot of jazz lately. The last few songs I've listened to are "Lover Man" by Billie Holiday, "Blues for Alice" by Charlie "Bird" Parker and a few songs not of the jazz genre - "Gone Away" by The Offspring and "Karma Police" by Radiohead.
Another one I love. "No Quarter" used to be my smoke-up song, so wandering and lost. . . . . .
I used to smoke up to this song back in my pot days as well. Whenever I hear it, it makes me nostalgic and brings me back to times past, especially autumn about six or seven years ago when I was in high school. We'd all meet at friends' houses to smoke weed after school and we'd always listen to classic rock, like Hendrix or Zeppelin. Drug use was so novel and felt so bad back then; it was just a very fun, innocent period in my life - I kinda miss it.

Runs In The Family - Amanda Palmer
my friend has problems with winter and autumn
they give him prescriptions
they shine bright lights on him
they say it's genetic, they say he can't help it,
they say you can't catch it -
but sometimes you're born with it.
my friend despite he gets shakes in the night
and they say that there's no way
that they could have caught it in
time takes his toll on him
it is traditional, it is inherited
predispositional
all day i've been wondering
what is inside of me
who can i blame for it?
i say it runs in the family
this family that carries me to such great lengths,
to open my legs up to anyone who'll have me
it runs in the family
i came by it honestly
do what you want 'cause who knows it might fill me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
fill me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
my friend's depressed
she's a wreck she's a mess
they've done all sorts of tests and
they guess it has something to do with her
grandmother's grandmother's grandmother
civil war soldiers who probably infected her
my friend has maladies and allergies
that she dates back to the 17th century
somehow she manages, in her misery
strips in the city and shows all her best tricks
i mean, well
i'm well, well
i mean i'm in hell
well i still have my health
at least that's what they tell me
if wellness is this
what in hells name is sickness?
but business is business and business
runs in the family
we tend to bruise easily
mad in the blood
i'm telling you 'cause i just want you to know me -
know me and my family
we're wonderful folks,
but don't get too close to me
'cause you might knock me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
knock me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
mary have mercy
now look what i've done
but don't blame me because
i can't help where i come from
and running is something that
we've always done well and
mostly i can't even tell what i'm running from
run from their pity
from responsibility
run from the country and run from the city
i can run from the law
i can run from myself
i can run from my life
i can run into debt
i can run from it all
i can run 'til i'm gone
i can run for the office and run for my cause
i can run using every last ounce of energy
i cannot, i cannot, i cannot
run from my family
they're hiding inside of me
corpses on ice
help me if you might
but just don't tell
my family they'd never forgive me
they'd say that i'm crazy
but they would say anything
if it would shut me up
shut me up
shut me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
shut me up
me up
me up
me up
me up
me up

Bad Habit - The Dresden Dolls - The Dresden Dolls
biting keeps your words at bay
tending to the sores that stay
happiness is just a gash away
when i open a familiar scar
pain goes shooting like a star
comfort hasn't failed to follow so far...
and you might say it's self-indulgent
you might say its self-destructive
but, you see, it's more productive
than if i were to be healthy
& pens and penknives take the blame
crane my neck & scratch my name
but the ugly marks
are worth the momentary gain...
when i jab a sharpened object in
choirs of angels seem to sing
hymns of hate in memorandum
and you might say it's self-indulgent
and you might say it's self-destructive
but, you see, it's more productive
than if i were to be happy
and sappy songs about sex and cheating
bland accounts of two lovers meeting
make me want to give mankind a beating
and you might say it's self-destructive
but, you see, i'd kick the bucket
sixty times before i'd kick the habit
and as the skin rips off i cherish the revolting thought
that even if i quit
there's not a chance in hell i'd stop
and anyone can see the signs
mittens in the summertime
thank you for your pity, you are too kind
and you might say its self-inflicted
but you see that's contradictive
why on earth would anyone practice self destruction?
and pain opinions are sitcom feeding
they dont know that their minds are teething
makes me want to give mankind a beating
i'm tried bandages and sinking
i've tried gloves and even thinking
i've tried vaseline
i've tried everything
and no-one cares if your back is bleeding
they're concerned with their hair receding
looking back it was all maltreating
every thought that occurred misleading
makes me want to give myself a beating....

The Look - Roxette
"A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" by Bob Dylan
I love the lyrics:
Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Ooooo deary me,
My little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed,
I tell him he should get up cos it's nearly quarter past three
He can't be bothered cos he's high on THC.
I ask him very nicely if he'd like a cup of tea,
I can't even see you cos the room is so smokey,
Don't understand how one can watch so much TV,
My baby brother Alfie how I wish that you could see.
Oooooo I only say it cos I care,
So please can you stop pulling my hair.
Now, now there's no need to swear,
Please don't despair my dear Mon frere.
Ooooo Alfie get up it's a brand new day,
I just can't sit back and watch you waste your life away
You need to get a job because the bills need to get paid.
Get off your lazy arse,
Alfie please use your brain
Surely there's some walls out there that you can go spray,
I'm feeling guilty for leading you astray,
Now how the hell do you ever expect that you'll get laid,
When all you do is stay and play on your computer games?
Oooooo I only say it cos I care,
So please can you stop pulling my hair.
Now, now there's no need to swear,
Please don't despair my dear Mon frere.
Oh little brother please refrain from doing that,
I'm trying to help you out so can you stop being a twat.
