Beck - The Information

The CD is pretty good, although nothing will ever touch Odelay!

But the cool thing was that the CD came with a bunch of stickers, good stickers too.. you're supposed to decorate/create your own album cover, but I ended up putting most of the stickers on my guitar. Also it came with a DVD.. all for 14 bucks. Nice :)

Shit i just realized it sounds like i'm trying to sell the CD now or something... whatever, it's a good CD.

Pendulum - Hold Your Colour

That is the only CD that I have d/l'ed that I felt I owed it to Pendulum to buy the disc. All the rest of my music I just nick off the internet. These are the days of free music, take advantage of it.

I haven't heard Carls new band, dirty pretty things? But babyshambles have a couple good tracks, 'fuck forever' and 'killamanjaro'. But I agree, it's a sucks that Pete keeps fucking things up. I hope they get back together.

I wish I saw Orbital, another of my favorites to go by the wayside.

See, I know we all live in a computer age and all, but free downloading really is destroying music as we know it. I know Lars Ulrich is the brunt of a lot of jokes, but as a musician in an indie band that was actively touring during the end of the nineties into the new decade, we saw and felt the decline of the 'working band' ethic, and I supported where he was coming from. And downloading had a lot to do with it---when we had our big, official, label-funded, fancy website up and running still, kids would talk on our own forum about how they'd essentially steal our music for free. And it was apparently happening all the time by our own fans....and they'd brag about it. And as the musician who writes the shit, you think "well, there's another dollar out of my pocket"---and sure enough, the royalty checks got smaller, the tour-support money dried up, and now the whole thing is on "hiatus".

When we did our last album, released in 2001, we had a budget of over a hundred grand to record it, the label sent us to a prestigious recording studio in Sweden for two months, and had us picked up in limos--all the 'rock-star' bullshit.

We'd be lucky to get 10-15 grand now and probably have to record it in someone's basement Pro-tools studio in a week.

It's a big part of the reason I have to work a regular guy job now. I'm not a fan of free downloading.

That truly sucks Zed,but sadly downloading is pretty much unstopable.Once something appeares it's almost impossible to stamp out.

Yeah, I can see it both ways really. I mean it sucks that it draws money away from the artist, but that's not going to stop me from downloading the music for free if it is out there. The other angle of it is, like I stated in my above post, there are some cds that once downloaded people will go out and actually buy it because they like it so much and want to support the artist. I did, actually went around plugging it to all my freinds too... who then went out and bought the cd also. Really about 5 sales occured and it all started with my downloading the cd. But if I was the musician it would piss me off too. Look at it this way though, music is art right? Most artist don't really get recognized until after they are dead, so they make little to nothing off their work. And although in the long run the illegal downloads hinder your profits your music is distributed to a much larger audience and that is awesome advertisement. If it was me though I would still say fuck all that and be pissed that it was lowering my record sales.

I say it's the suits in the office who don't do anything to create, just get way to rich off the backs of others. I know it costs money to put out a CD, but they could do it alot cheaper, alot!!

Now on the flip side, the downloaded CD cost just as much, but w/o the production, shipping, media, etc, that cost is robbery.

I, the closest I've come to stealing music online is the web site I posted above, it's not free but it's not being ass fucked either.

ZK I understand completely how you feel, now hearing it from you. It's a shame you guys have to be in the middle of the whole thing, what needs to happen is the artists taking back their own music, cutting out the fat cats and getting the help of the fans behind them to move this new media type forward and not into the ground.

^^Yeah, I can see validity in the other side of the coin, too. And I'm kind of a hypocrite in the sense that I sometimes go to a buddy's house and see what he's got new on his iTunes, and if it's something I'm interested in, I'll burn a disc. If I like it, I've purchased the disc every time. But do I know where he got it originally? No, and it's probably a free download. So am I perpetuating the whole thing? Probably....and as Nick said, it's too huge and unstoppable now.

I dunno, I think I'm going through mid-life crisis of some sort. I'm in my early 40s now, still have my long hair and tats (folks say I look much younger :) ), and I'm like stuck in a time-warp or something. All I ever wanted (and feel I was meant to do) was support myself playing my guitar. And I did it for over 20 years (well, sold a little coke along the way, too), lived a dream-life, albums, tours, awards and shit on my walls. And one day it was just.....over. Now five years have gone by and it's like I don't know what to do with myself. So I get high on heroin and watch the world go by as I become more and more reclusive...and I look at the music industry, the downloading, the corporate sponsorship of extreme metal tours, and all the new kids who can play faster, better, and have time yet on their side.....and I just want more heroin. Fuck it.

I was in studio recently while they were creating follie for a motion picture and they were using pro-tools for the audio/video. Basement type studios will use Vegas. Atleast that's what I hear. Not trying to start an argument or anything.

I haven't bought a cd since I was 18 because for 4 years I was living in South America, 1/2 of that in Mexico City, a little over a year in Buenos Aires Argentina, and a few other countries. Uruguay, Chille, etc. In all honesty you can't find a legit copy of anything in Mexico, and all the music I picked up while I was there was given to me. Once I came back I started either buying the songs legit track by track, or downloading them. I've done both. 1st) I'm not coming down on ya but remember you got to live your dream, most of us don't, won't even get a sniff of it.

I'm not as old as you old man (lol) couple yrs off but I've had a thought in my brain since I turned 30, I asked my mom, I asked friends, I've asked everyone I could. When are you grown-up, when do you become an adult, I've been waiting for this shift, this crossing of a threshold in to adulthood that has never come. I though when this happened all thing would be clear and I'd know what to do in life, instead I've just been ambling my way around in circles. Well I don't think there is anything like adulthood for me, maybe for some, but for me it's to try and be happy, be the best farther I can be, fight the good fight when I can and just continue until I die. After looking for sooo many yrs for a master plan in life, fuck, you think things happen for a reason - you keep playing those same #'s in the lottery because they've got to come in sometime right? Wrong. Another thing that made me realize this....you know lightening never strikes the same place twice right, bullshit, it's got just as much chance as hitting the same spot as any other spot. In fact it happens alot.

I don't know what I'm saying, just, if your looking for something out there, be careful because what you pass by may be the thing you really wanted all along. In short: carpe deez nuts baby!!!

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with Pro-Tools...we used it for mastering on our last album. It's an incredible program (I use Logic Pro 7 myself, but....), but it has made the whole "recording studio" as it was a thing of the past, in a way. Y'know, the band hanging in the lounge while the singer does his umpteenth take, piles of cocaine on the table and strippers from the titty-bar down the street hangin' out going "you guys rock, what's the name of your band again?". Those days are long gone, I think. And that's a shame.....

Yeah, I can see why that would be a shame if you're in that possition. But then it does allow other independant type bands a more level playing field for putting something great out. I guess that's just how these things evolve. I feel the complete opposite, the music world has never been at a all time low, why do you think all the old bands are getting back together and going on tour.....becuase they can!!

Where are the super groups, where every album was good, not just one or one song on it and then the rest of there work never sees the light of day.

The made for tv, never wrote a song, but dance real well, bands have killed it for everyone. We only got 3 min. and 30 sec. of attention span, past that, "what's on big brother...?"

Well, key words there being `going to be`. Right now things are in a huge transitional phase, but (my opinion) by leveling the playing field by removing the traditional recording studios like Zodiac was talking about there are more bands who are able to record and put their music out allowing more music to choose from. It's possible to create fantastic sound quality literally in someone’s basement if the producer knows what he's doing. It's no longer a requisite to include a very large very expensive recording studio. They still exists sure, but they aren't necessarily a requirement if you can get someone to produce for you who knows what they're doing. The quality of a cd, the artistic merit, how "good" it is, is in the end still up to the band.

I think the success of all the old groups reuniting is partly because a lot of people are like me---they long for the old days of music, when a new album, or a concert was something special. Granted, some bands should just stay retired, but it's been cool for an old-fart like me to see a resurgence in interest some retro shit.

I remember I saw Black Sabbath in '78, was like my second concert, 13th row, and when the lights went down and Ozzy ran out on stage, fuck man, it was like magic or something. Talk about chasing a high....I'm still chasing that feeling. Probably why I chose the life I did, heh...

Funny, I've been playing with some old band-mates from my "coming-up" years, way back in the day, and we're doing old metal cover songs, the classics, if you will, shit like Maiden, Priest, Accept, Mercyful Fate....and it's been a blast. It has no chance of going anywhere outside of a few bar gigs, but it's been fuckin' fun. And lemme tell ya, those songs may be old, but the licks are still as hard to play as they were back then. I challenge any of these new hot-shot young guitarists to play the double-lead in "Fast As A Shark" (Accept) and play it well. Ok, time to shut up now, temazepam kicking in, Zodiac blathering....

Also, as the decades progress more and more genres are being created. There are the typical music of the 50’s 60’s 70’s 80’s etc with a few offshoots, but once you get up to music of the 90’s, music in 2000+ there are so many different genres now to choose from that yeah one band or one album doesn’t become as earth shattering as in the past. But that's my take on it.

I agree totally, the state of the music now is so poor that the fans want the old day, still you can keep quiet roit, but that's not a good thing. Just currious but what's your take on groups like Tool, or Nine inch Nails? (limiting it to 2) I bought my first Nine inch nails cd back in 92, first Tool album back in 92/93 and I've followed them since. These guys to me are like Ozzy, Pink Floyd etc to some of you. Man, when the first NIN came out, I was floored. Loved it, and saw 'em on the first Lollapalooza tour and they smoked everybody there. "Broken" is also one of the heaviest things I've ever heard. Got to meet and hang out with Reznor when he came to a few of our shows in LA. He complimented me on my guitar playing--no bullshit. I thought maybe I'd be the next log-player for NIN, but then our singer interrupted being a drunken ass (on purpose, I think) and I never had the chance to speak with him again. Then he got so huge...

On Tool: also loved 'em in the early days (I still have their demo tape on cassette!! I can take pics if you fucks don't believe me). Opiate, Ainema, all great music. I kinda lost track of them as they got bigger, but they are all incredible musicians.

I may be old, but I ain't dead, pal...:D

Personaly I've bought every one of both NIN and tools works, love them both...but...Tool a little more well ALOT more, I got to see them open on the small stage at lollapalooza in 90 I think when jane's head lined the show, oh man that was wild. Got a great story about that show.

The memorable tour for me was ofcourse when NIN showed up here in mormonville Utah and the craziness that ensued with Marilyn Manson being banned from Utah etc. That was one kick ass show! My parents nearly died when they found out that I went to it.

Btw why dv1313?

oh, it's just a username I came up with for messenger and boards that I post on and such. dv is for digital video, I coined this nic after I got my first cannon dv camcorder. The 1313 is just because 13 itself is usually taken as a nic, so I went with 1313 :p I use 13 as my sort of lucky number / in passwords for things, stuff like that.

Looking back I should have came up with something different because I'm explaining the nic all the time to people, but I use it for everything now so it's too late to change it. :D

My memory is real bad I guess, I know I had the best blotter I ever had at that 1st palooza show but, tool wasn't on the side stage until the 93 show, which I was at but don't remember ANY of it, just tool.

That is true, I got to do a lot that some only dream about, and I am thankful for that, believe me. Just feeling a little lost these days, I guess...
But I know what you mean about the "shift": I've been waiting for it, too, but I don't think it ever comes. I think you have to recognize the treasurable moments as they happen and appreciate 'em then. I have, but wish I'd done it more....but I still feel like a kid inside, I still like all the shit I did when I was growing up (cartoons, action figures, toys, etc..) and a lot more. Like drugs, heh. But growing up is for boring people. I'll pass.....
ZK

there is a book i read by joseph conrad (heart of darkness dude) about what happens when you are supposed to become an "adult" the book was called The Shadow Line, and that is what he called that area when you go from young man to older, but it is different for everyone and moves aorund. a place that is hard to define.

Oh I see, hah, I'm an idiot. Just wanted to hear opinions about those two groups in particular. When you run in the circles we do you get to hear a lot about pink floyd and ozzy and the stones as being the big influential bands. But I wasn't around for all of that, to me it's Tool, NIN, hell even Nirvana (I don't personally like them), Smashing Pumpkins, who were the influential artists. I don't necesarilly like those particular gourps, but they were the groups that I think helped shape the music of today. Who's great of the artists of today? Guess we'll have to wait till the next decade to look back at that and see who's still in the game and who's influential. Personally I like System of a Down, Deftones (picked up their first album in 93ish, went to a deftones concert at a local rollerskating rink before they took off) ... and from there it pretty much goes off into the not so known. Just wanted to know what you guys thought about groups from the last decade now that we can look back on them. I don't know, I'm bored and I don't have anything but alcohol and the internet to entertain me right now, so I'm rambling away about my opinions.

dv it sounds like you have a good knowledge of the 90's. i agree TOOL will be one of those influential groups hell I even heard Sammy Hagar say he was listening and being influenced by them.

I think that Alice in Chains will be remembered for influenceing a lot of groups in the 00's. like godsmack, etc...

God, I don't even remember. I think it was Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory, which I bought about a year ago. I had downloaded their stuff before, and I had bought Meteora too. So I just finally bought HT. Mainly I just download a lot of stuff and listen to it on iTunes or hook up my laptop to my stereo. I have an iPod, but I never use it anymore. It's not one of the newer ones that can play videos, it's the previous version. I thought about selling it, but I'd proabably only get like $40 bucks for it, when it cost $299 two years ago. Let's see, other music. I like Marilyn Manson. My favority albums are the one that had The Dope Show...what was it called. Coma White? I don't remember. I also loved his last album The Golden Age of Grotesque. Actually, I wish he'd come out with a new one. He and Linkin Park. Although, I think they're coming out with a new one in January. Other groups I like. The Deftones, Garbage, Adema, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins (I wish they were still around), A Perfect Circle, Tool, Korn, Bjork, Breaking Benjamin, Bush, Chevelle, others...too many to list. If you're talking techno (trance, house, nu nrg), I like DJ Irene, Kemikal Kidd, DJ Micro, Sasha, Paul Okenfold, DJ Kibon, etc. Mainly the mainstreamers.

i know ive read somewhere that those old ipods, the photo ones, the ones that came out right before the video ones, CAN play video. im sure if it had decent resolution it would work. you have to install a form of linux onto it and then there are all sorts of programs and shit you can do on it. of course it voids the warranty.

1st yes they are in the studio now working on new stuff, BUT it's jut Billy and Jimmy from the old line-up.
I used to think I was their biggest fan, punkins that is, well really there was great music coming out of Chy-town then, Liz Fair, Urge Overkill (funking best band), etc. I heard Gish once and was hooked that tape didn't leave my player that whole summer ( what a good time that summer was too) anyhoo, fast forward to their last and boy did they go down hill; really then Zwan.....PLEASE, I'm still sending letters to Billy asking for the $13 back I spent on that one. It's just like the bigger Billy's head got the worse his music got, and I can understand the rest of the band, him being a total control freak in all; and last but not least the worst step they EVER took was to fire Jimmy Chamberlain. Lost a huge chunk of their sound that way.

Machina II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music (released in 2000).

"MACHINA II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music is an album by The Smashing Pumpkins that was released for free on the Internet on September 5, 2000. A sequel to MACHINA/The Machines of God, it is the sixth album from the Pumpkins, though there are many fans who remain ignorant of its existence because it was never commercially released. It consists of three EPs full of B-Sides and alternate versions, and one double LP which is the actual album. Both MACHINA albums are concept albums. At the time the album was released it was to be the final Smashing Pumpkins studio album, but as of the summer of 2006 the band has reformed and is in the process of writing a new album.
Virgin Records was unwilling to release MACHINA II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music so close to the first (and commercially unsuccessful) MACHINA. As is evident by the title, the band was fed up with Virgin. As a final farewell, and as a snub to the unsupportive label, it was released independently. Only 25 total copies were made. The vinyls were shipped via FedEx to several heavily active fans in the online community, with instructions to immediately redistribute it among the fans."

I was one of those fans are you?

(BTW I meant an ignorant one about the album, not one that got a LP, christ I think one sold on ebay for $10,000)

I sold coke to Jimmy Chamberlain a few times when they used to play this dive bar here called The Unicorn. I think he used to shoot it, 'cause he'd always go into the dressing room with it and come out looking real fucked up.

Lots of bands used to play that bar before they got big. Soundgarden played for about 20 people, which was cool---I stood right in front of 'em and watched the entire set (UltraMega Ok tour). Nirvana played a few times before they got big and once we walked out after they'd played and Kurt was changing a tire on their van with a few other guys that must've been roadies or something.

Useless trivia for the fuck of it.

I saw them open for the scorp's after their 1st album came out, I was down right in front of a small arena about 6000 people, the guitarist had a WALL of marshalls, and I'll admit it I did like that album back then, I still have the tape too:o but anyway most of the front 5 rows were all heckling them "you suck, you suck we want the scorp's we want the scorp's...." the guitarist got sick of hearing, it walked over to the side where most of them were got real close turned his guitar up AS LOUD AS IT WOULD GO and hit this note and held it forever then played some of the most amazing guitar I've seen/heard live, now I've hung out at shows right in front of the PA stack, but this was the loudest fucking thing I've heard, it was too loud.......everyone's, all of my friends ears were ringing for FIVE DAYS. Heh, yeah, I've been around the block a few times that's for sure. And I've preserved pretty well, haha. But, no, sadly, I didn't stop to help Nirvana change their tire---if I'd have known how big they were to become I would have, for sure, and maybe found a camera or at least an autograph. It's kinda weird how they broke through---"Nevermind" had been out for a good year before it hit, and I distinctly remember a bunch of us going to Chicago to see them at the Metro and to a Fangoria horror convention all in the same weekend. Well, what sticks out in my mind was how this band I'd seen at a tiny dive bar in my city only drew 40 people a year before and now the Metro (a good sized venue) was sold out and when Kurt walked onstage just about every girl there started screaming. I remember thinking "damn, these guys are getting huge"---but they went beyond huge, of course.

Thanks, I appreciate it, and a few people have suggested it---and I'm totally flattered and humbled that anyone would be interested. I have thought that maybe I've done a lot of wild livin' over the last 25-30 years and that maybe I should write it all down if I have kids (and I'm an uncle three times now). Maybe I could title it "How To Fail In The Music Industry But Have A Lot Of Fun Doing It", heheh. A little long-winded, just like me....

I loved eating at "The Green Iguana" (I think it was called that...), and sittin' in the sun having a girl-drink. Also, we used to be friends with the Genitorturers ('till we did a co-headlining tour with them and had a huge falling out---but I still am cool with David Vincent), so they'd hook us up when we were there.

I'll tell ya---I would make one ugly woman, but if you ever get up to cold-ass Wisconsin, you're welcome at my house anytime. I'll get us some of that kick-ass dope I can get and we'll listen to "Sin After Sin" or "Sad Wings...". But I have no dog (we wanna get one), but right now a few cats...

And music is my life, too---my destiny, and my soul, too. And all kinds of music---not just metal, although that is where my true passion lies. Music has allowed me to see the world, and express every facet of every emotion---and share it with whomever was interested at the time.

But maybe when the cover-band starts playing out you could hook us up with a gig and we'll road-trip on down----sounds wonderful right about now when it's 20 fucking degrees here...

I remember thinking "damn, these guys are getting huge"---but they went beyond huge, of course.ZK

Yeah, everyone who wasn't living under a rock has to remeber when it all broke. The non stop playing of that video for nevermind on MTV (I watched it at a friends), I mean hell I even remember kids were going around to school gymnasiums and trashing them a la that video. I was in the 6th grade when all that happened and I picked up their cassette for Nevermind.

My favorite album of theirs though was Bleach (which I read in a biography of Kurt cost $600 to record!), and then Incesticide. I don't think it was necessarily because they were the less known, and in the case of Bleach not known at all albums. I just thought they really stood out to me appart from everything else i was hearing at the time. I think it was 92/93 when I really got into Nirvana. I had purchased Nevermind when it came out, and later Inutero, then I found Bleach and Incesticide. Pretty much that whole time frame right there I thought of Kurt as a god and I was really depressed that he was gone. Ofcourse I got over that and found other great bands, I think I officially laid Kurt to rest when I went to the NIN concert in 94. But yeah, I really idolized Kurt Dave and Krist for the better part of a year, or 2 years.

Aw man I had this long ass post, that when I clicked submit it (the site) went down. Fuck.

Shit it was long too, I'm pissed, I'll get by though.

Main theme, I used to work at the green iguana, small fucking world mate, Sad Wings is my all time bestest, on a island w/ only 10 albums album. Sin, is next.

Bummer, man.....we must've blown the bandwidth again---I went to get the news on Blabbermouth, then came back and we were up n' running again. Too bad, bro, we were on a roll, now I gotta go sleepy cause I get to get up in fucking 4 hours to go to work again. Been working double shifts all week---some fuckin' rock-star life, huh?

BTW, I relapsed again tonight because on top of everything else, my cat that I have had for 20 years (yup, born easter Sunday 1986) is dying. I don't wanna subject him to all that vet bullshit and I think he just wants to die here at home. A cat-rescue place that I volunteer for occasionally sent someone over to give him subcutaneous saline to keep him hydrated and said that he probably isn't in any pain....just old. But it's hurting me bad so that's probably why I spent part of my rent money to numb myself with dope. Sucks sucks sucks...

Anyway, back on topic---it is a small world---I can't believe that you worked there, first place I ever ate 'gator bites'. But I also remember having one of the best Cuban sandwiches ever at some little place in Ybor.

Fucking Masquerade, though....had a few great shows there, and met some real slutty girls too. We even talked about moving to Tampa for a while. Also, some fuck-bag stole my delay pedal right off of my pedal-board, which was sitting right on the stage. We finished our set, came back for an encore and it was gone....a huge hole in my effect-chain that I had to crouch down and fix in front of the crowd. I hope it electrocuted him or something...

But I would seriously love to come do a show there just for fun, especially in winter---and yeah, it's gonna go down to 20 fucking degrees tonite. And tomorrow I get to work outside up on a 60 foot boom truck restoring the facade of a building that's gonna be, of all things, "The Milwaukee Beer Museum". Kill me now. If I wasn't gonna make about a grand off this job this week, I'd just launch myself off the side of the fucker...

But yeah, we should all figure out a way to hook-up somehow in the near future. I gotta get outta this city and go somewhere for a bit---I ain't been outta town in almost two years....a first for me.

Goodnight all. Let's continue our discussion tomorrow, eh, Alow? And you, too, dv13. And whoever the fuck else is reading all this....

Oh, shit, I fucked up, sorry, my bad....the band who's singer underwent a sex change is King Kobra, not Kingdom Come, duh, I feel like an idiot....

But yeah, King Kobra's singer Mark Free underwent a sex change and is now Marcie Free...

BTW, Nick, I fucking love Ministry...totally, and Psalm 69 is amazing, though I do have their whole catalog and like all the directions Jourgenson and Co have gone.

Sonic Youth and Big Black are both cool bands....just never been rabid for either.

So this Mark Free is a kinda heavy metal Wayne/Jayne County, far out.Mind you,it's a pretty good selling point for his/her band in freak showish kinda way.
Just heard "Jesus built my hot rod" for the first time in ages the other day.It still gets my foot tapping.

PRIZEFIGHTERINFERNO

Artist: The Prize Fighter Inferno
Album: "My Brothers Blood Machine"

This is the side project of Coheed and Cambria's frontman, Claudio Sanchez. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE.
This album is a spinoff of the Ongoing COheed and Cambria Saga...spanning 3 albums. So this is the fourth installment.

as ive said a million times...i love coheed stuff. Excellent guitar and the fact that Every song on every album forms an ongoing story makes it so damn interesting. It gives the Body of work so much meaning...unlike so much Pop music bullshit. I seriously recommend this Band to everyone. The thing is they are so diversified that you really need to listen to all three albums and this one last to really dig. hear the whole body of work and then judge.

Its cool to listen to when fucked up too because your layin in bed or whatever hearing this CRAZY yet raddical story unfold and your like Shit i understand that.
There infuences are Pink Floyd, Sabbath, Led Zepplin etc.

1st Album: THE SECOND STAGE TURBINE BLADE
2nd Album: IN KEEPING SECRETS OF SILENT EARTH 3
3rd Album: GOOD APOLLO, IM BURNING STAR IV: Vol. 1 From Fear through the Eyes of Madness
