Has anyone had experience with amitripytiline? My wife is prescribed these- 'take one half to one pill at bedtime'. She doesn't like them and I have really taken a shine to them... great nights sleep and it seems to compliment my bedtime dosage of opies...

Hate the shit.
Atypical antipsychotics are great for insomnia, for soe people, but so are benzos and barbs... Plus they're muh more fun.

It's not an antipsychotic, it's a trycyclic antidepressant. It works very well for some people for sleep. I found that in the doses that helped me to sleep, I was too tired and groggy the next day. Also the anticholinergic side effects caused probs, dry mouth ect. Glad it's working out for you tho!
Hate the stuff.Next morning,I feel like I've been hit over the head with something heavy.

yea, they help me get to sleep, but the next day i feel like i took way too much cold medicine and it kinda gives me RLS, in the arms too. i keep having to stretch and yawn. never tried them with opiates though. if they potentiate id give it a try since the opiates would probably drown out the little bad effects.
oh yea, i have 10 mg pills, usually take 2-4 of them, when i did take them. they DO work wonders in w/d though.

Yes, as they say, tolerance is a bitch. I sometimes- not always- take about 100mg's in the evening for a restfull sleep. No bad effects in the morning, but maybe it's because I take about 20mgs of Hydro at the same time. It seems to work for me, just wondered if I'm alone on this....

I take the 50mg tabs and i take perc 7.5. used to take them with vic 5 back in the day, then i was only only 25mg tab. just seems to make you more sleepy. it really helps with sleep and w/ds. once you get used to it the hangover effect in the morning is gone. it is not an anti-psychotic, it is a tri-cyclic anti-deppressant, used from people to stabilize moods, chronic pain, migraines, nerve pain.

My hubby takes it for depression. It's the only thing he can take that doesn't make him crazy...lol... They don't seem to make him sleepy or anything; just keeps him on an even keel. Since he takes them at bedtime; they don't seem to interfere with the lortabs either. I don't think it's something you can use to get off on tho.....

Personal experience tells me to tell others when asked that no, amitriptyline is not good... and I stand by that, but I guess some people might like them. Some people like codeine, some like butalbital, some get off on 10mg hydros; and most don't. But if it's something you enjoy, I can't say it's not worth it. As far as potentiating opiates, I think it would be a VERY subjective thing, and chemically I don't see any reason why it should. But for some people, I guess it's possible... still, if I'm just trying to add a more "groggy" feel to things, I'd simply swallow a 1/2-gram or so of diphenhydramine. Amitriptyline, when I used to take 100-300mg a day, eventually made me a mental-zombie, & I'd sit on my stoop & stare across the street & get burned by cigarettes I'd forget were there. And it was never that opiate-cigarette-forgetfulness feel... More like an "I don't care about ANYTHING... in a bad way"-feel. If a kid on their bike were to have been splattered on the street in front of me by a large-wheeled truck, I'd have not cared; might've even missed it if I blinked. A thousand-yard stare, like Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket.
But again, do what thou wilt.
Nevertheless, I do say to be careful. Mixing them with other depressants/opiates/alcohol could be the setting for a bad night in an Emergency Room.

I take 50mg of Amitriptyline every night before bed... it works wonders for me. I sleep like a baby. And since I have been taking it for so long, I have no groggy "hangover" the next morning. I personally really like the stuff for my insomnia.
