FRENCH VALLEY, Calif. (KTLA) --A mantrying to detoxify from painkillers allegedly crashed his van Sunday into another car, stabbed the other driver with a cordless drill before turning the tool on himself. The man, identifiedas Garrie Apengren, 38, of Menifee, drove his car into the other vehicle just before noon in the 322000 block of Safflower Street in an unincorporated area of French Valley. The man had reportedly not slept for several days as he was going through detoxification from pain medication.

I'll bet it was the insomnia. I've gone for ~a week without sleep due to w/d, and my decision making wasn't exactly spot on.

But how do you stab yourself while in w/d? The pain would be unthinkable! Even without the w/d, it would be pretty iffy.

Reading your post made me think of all the natural endorphins that the body/brain produces. I think recently scientists discovered that the body also creates MORPHINE (not just some beta-endorphin agonist) but honest to god morphine (in very small quantities though).

For a person jonesing for a fix, they might seriously consider trying to "steal" another person's endorphins (1/4-inch drill required).

Now imagine if there was a gland at the base of everyone's brain that held the equivalent of 300mg of morphine (actually a mixture of endorphins, enkaphalins, and endogenous morphine). If opiate-lovers found out about this, there would be a rash of desecrations at funeral homes & graveyards..., at first.

Then, the murders would start.....

Kind of a twist on the Zombie Theme (over-done, yes, but this one would be a bit more believable, scientifically). Have you all seen the documentary of that 1 fellow with an uncountable amount of drunk in public arrests. Well this last time I checked into detox there was a guy that looked just like him, and was equally nuts. The first instance after an NA group the leader asked him to join the circle to pray out, he gets up starts punching himself in the face then proceeds to bang his head on the wall. The next instance he tied a navy knot with his sheets around his neck and hung himself in his room. Some one randomly walked in the room and saw him hanging, blue, the whole ten yards, and saved his life with seconds to spare. The last time I was in detox I can swear the loonytoons came alive with all the kooks there, however it re-assured me that this disease is nothing to mess with, when I get there age I can be the same or worse.
