Beloved Opiophile.org Members,
Those of you who logged in yesterday may have noticed a post made by me concerning the upgrading of the board and some changes made to the database on which the board sits. We had lost a handful of posts because of a backup/restore issue at the fault of no one but ourselves.
So yesterday, starting at about 10amMST, the board went live again and carried on as usual. Last night, before I went to sleep I checked on the status of the database and everything looked great. No errors, no problems, nothing.
This morning when I logged in there were over 100 errors and anyone who had registered (only about 10 people) had corrupt registrations. Uploaded avatars were distorted and reputation was totally fuckered up. I shut the board off and turned to our software provider for help and found that there additional problems that we had overlooked in upgrading (bugs on the side of mySQL, which have gone on unresolved.)
In order to make board cost-effective, we run on the freely distributed mySQL database server. The benefit of this is that we don't have to pay a dime for what Microsoft otherwise charges a few hundred bucks. The downside to this and that it can be buggy, and instable.
So, on to the bullshit and bad news. The only way to absolutely ensure that our forum data is safe now and also months down the line is to restore from a copy of the database dated two days ago. This means that any posts made since 10am yesterday have been deleted (plus the posts that were deleted because of our original fuckup.)
These posts are not lost! We still have a copy of them in the rawest of forms; in a text file surrounded by other code and that sort of thing. We know how frustrating it is to have to rewrite what they had already written, so if you had posted something in the last 24 hours that you absolutely can't write again, please PM me and I'll go through the database, find your post, and email it to you in text form so you can repost it. This is the best we can do.
So I'm sure most of you are asking. "So what about tomorrow? Are you going to fuck us over again then, too?" The answer is no; I'm told and have read elsewhere (by others who have had the same problem) that we'll be ok. Can you trust us? (what did WSB say? Never trust a junky?) Sure you can, right? (right?) This should be it, I'll be kicking some ass if it isn't.
