View Full Version : Prickly Poppy as booster/potentiator Experiment

I'm experimenting with 10x prickly poppy resin as a booster/potentiator...I took 20 mg hydrocodone 2 hours ago, and feeling the full effects now (however weak). Anyways, this extract is from the fresh leaves/flowers of the plant, as the latex from seeds and pods are toxic. I've tried this once before, with kratom, but I used a quarter gram, and it was unsuccessful. I'm about to start smoking a whole gram, and I'll post the results afterwards...prickly poppy contains isoquinolines which have stopped morphine withdrawals in rats...the experiments were done at a university in Italy. I'll try to find links as I smoke...
Wow, you can really tell I'm bored, huh?

interesting. i have always wondered about these "other" poppies that contain isoquinolines and the effect they have. i dont know to much about this area so thanks, for the links too. keep me updated on your experimentation.

Well, I wasn't expecting anything at all, so I was kinda surprised when it actually worked....in some ways! I'm itchier than I was...more drowsy...and it seemed to add to the buzz a little bit...overall, impressed that it actually worked as well as it did, but its still nothing to get excited about (at all), since the price is about $7.99 per gram...there's MUCH cheaper boosters and stuff out there. I was just bored. And now I'm not so bored. :) Mission accomplished...
I still haven't tried that corydalis 5x extract I've got. I gave it to a friend for his hurt ankle, and he liked it, but I heard it was a dopamine antagonist, which doesn't sound too appealing...am I missing out?

your right dopamine antagonist doesnt sound to appealing! Im glad your experiment is going well so far. Any knowledge is good knowledge. I dont know much about that area of study as i said but im still interested. i should probably do more research on potentiators and related topics. thanks man

No problem, and I've always wondered about the "other" poppies, too...heh. Thats how I found this site actually; looking up stuff on corydalis in google, I found one of jacky's posts.
Its actually kicked in a little more since I posted that last message. I think I went the wrong route...I prolly should've made a tea or something with it. Seems like I wasted a lot of material just smoking....I know of a 12x powdered extract, but it said the whole plant, which might include the toxic seeds/pods. Oh well, I'll prolly get another gram or two of the resin to experiment with...maybe some of those neat plants from phytoextractum, like sophora....
But, I'm sure prickly poppy raw herb (and a ton of others) can be bought pretty cheap per dose in bulk, and people could their own extractions.
Also, the effects I'm feeling right now very well could be placebo...but I kinda doubt that because I really wasn't expecting anything at all. I just wish I had more so I could be a little more positive. Oh well, there's always next week!

According to Dr. Dukes resources, both prickly poppy and california poppy have trace amounts of codeine and morphine in them... prickly poppy apparently also has lots of other alkaloids, and tannins... analgesic and anesthetic properties as well... berberine is apparently one of the stronger alkaloids, that has some pretty strong properties... and its an isoquinoline...
By the way you should be able to find it for a lot cheaper than eight bucks per gram... shit that's higher than papaver somniferum... are you using raw plant material?
Ohh... I bet you got the extract from mjb, right? Oh, wait, nope, its only six bucks there...
Anyway, get the plant material, its cheaper and you can just make a tea or tincture that will no doubt have more of an impact... that's how I use the california poppy, and it works well.

Thanks for the tip...and I got it from IamShaman.com. Expensive, but that resin did smell really good, actually. But yeah, I'll have to get some raw plant material this week...and some California Poppy...has anyone heard of any other poppies that might contain goodies, however mild? Experimenting is half the fun, I don't need anything to stomp my mudhole in my ass...hehe...I might try Red Poppy, too, I heard it was a good potentiator.
BTW, you have me really interested in Cali poppy now....is it good on its on, or is it more of a potentiator? Also, how much grammage for someone with very little tolerance?
I'm gonna have a huge collection of poppy plants, I can see it now...my friends are gonna think I lost my mind.
Anyways, thanks again for the tips, and I'll post anymore experimenting I do at the end of the week (when my stuff comes in)...

mexican poppy and there are a few more... check here for all your research needs (http://www.ars-grin.gov/duke/), doc duke is a bad mofo...
as for cali poppy, its good, but way too little goodies to be anything like an opiate, it is good for insomnia as part of a cocktail... i've only tried it once, the first time i bought it, totally solo and there was a relaxing effect but nothing too impressive...
like i said, the best way to use these (and don't forget about danshen, very important for any opiate potentiator blend (http://www.phytoextractum.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=22&zenid=31ff65d22c34c84b21182681655bb515)) is in a blend...
seriously spend some time on dr. dukes' site, you'll be surprised what you find!

Thank ya kindly, that is one huge site...!
I've heard some about blue lily being a opioid-like substance, too...I've been taking Blue lily lately...ran out last Friday. That stuff is almost psychedelic at high doses...it kinda reminded of the euphoria and energy of a good ephedrine buzz...but less wirey, more electric feeling (I know thats vague, only way to describe it, tho). And mild closed-eye visuals....couldn't sleep for shit, which pissed me off cause I always heard it was a great sleep-aid. Gave me a headache after a while, too. Nothing like an opie at all, really...still impressed with it, tho.

Yer welcome, for sure! Any fellow researcher and curious mindspace traveller should have that map at his fingertips to chart unknown courses! (or something like that)
The blue lily sounds interesting, i've never tried it. you should start a thread on it so we can get some feedback from others. I'm also going to check at erowid (i know you've been around there, right?) for some trip reports.

Excuse me for posting this here, but you guys obviously know a great deal about poppy ingestion. Could use a little advice; I know virtually nothing about pod/extract use. Perhaps 3 months ago, I ordered a small quantity of pods intending to sample tea; there are several recipes archived here that have garnered widespread praise from fellow opis. Due to an unplanned diversion (unexpected hydro source, ahem), I didn't end up making use of 'em. I did hold on to them but I don't know that they are good any longer. They are dried, so I don't see that they would have lost potency, but I can't tell whether or not they are moldy. They appear to have some small, dark spots on the pod body, but I honestly can't remember if these were present when they arrived. (Was a wee bit less than sober and attentive at the time, dontcha know.) I have read conflicting things about using moldy pods; some people seem to think it is ok, some don't. Any opinions? Thanks.

A little off topic, but I'll bite (but by the way, these are totally different poppy materials... not even pods!) - your pods are fine, and probably haven't lost any potency. Pods are plants, and therefore not perfect, as you know. If they weren't wet, and haven't been in a moist environment since you got them, then the dark spots are probably just blemishes... natural. If they are large or look gross, they might be mold. You can open the pod and if the seeds come out naturally, and the darkness isn't wide-spread inside, you can cut around (just removing) the dark spots, if you think they are mold.
There are several discussions on mold and what it, whether its dangerous, etc. I usually just leave the small ones, cut out any that look strange or are too large for comfort, and take a look inside before I make a 'keep/discard' decision.
Search for pods and mold or just mold (that's really not talked about in relation to anything else as far as I know) and you'll see pics, discussions, etc. I say they're probably natural, but for a good answer, you'll probably want to post a new thread with pics.
Good luck. Don't worry too much. And scrub the outside of the pods with a damp cloth to clean.

Thanks, HoM. The spots are exceedingly small and don't particularly resemble mold...but I didn't want to take any foolish risks. They have been kept in a dry environment of a more or less constant temperature, so I hope they are ok. This will be my first experience with pods, and I am anxious for it to go well! I hope to give it a try this weekend - provided that the pods look fit to use when I crack them open. Hmm...I'm on sub. Do you think that abstaining from dosing for 12-24 hours would allow me to reap full benefits from tea? I've only been on sub for a short time and I have no prior experience to draw on.

Yeah, good idea...I'll try to remember to start a thread with a tiny-bit more detailed account in the Other Drugs (or whichever is more appropriate) subforum tonight....
I dunno, I've read blue lily trip reports on erowid too, but they confuse blue lily (nymphaea) with the lotus flower (nelumbo nucifera)....no one really knows what the active ingredient of blue lily is...that I've seen anyways. Now, Lotus IS a nice muscle relaxer/sedative, but blue lily didn't seem to be...lily was...uh...a good bit less subtle.
