I underwent severe and unsuccessful knee surgery about 7 mo.s ago, which resulted in extreme chronic pain that to this day i am still dealing with. because of this, i have been on and off various opiates for pain mangement ever since: two 3-month-long runs of OC and most recently, fentanyl. my dr. doesn't want me on those types of narcs and has decided that i should give bupe a try, both to manage the opiate dependency and also to help combat the pain (he says that even tho its not for pain, that sometimes bupe can actually be a better pain reliever that any opiate). he said that if i HAVE TO be on an opiate/narcotic pain medication, that he would only be comfortable with me being on methadone. So my question is this:

Do you get a buzz/high from bupe? like is it like taking a percocet or a vicodin? whats it feel like to be on it, compared to a regular opiate? is there any way to induce a high from it?

Also, does anyone know if bupe is a good pain reliever? or would it be smarter to use methadone?

if you'd like to be more clear-headed, I'd personally go with buprenorphine and in buprenex form (not suboxone, although most will debate there's no difference) rather than methadone. However, methadone might be more effective in relieving your pain. in the long run, it would probably be best for you to start with bup; the withdrawal from methadone is pretty intense compared that of bup.

Go to another doctor and get a second opinion! I've never heard of a doctor who would prescribe methadone for knee pain etc... I have several friends who now take methadone for addiction to opiates who are now addicted to the -done and wish they had stayed with the opiates! I've heard alot of positives about the bup though but same goes, don't know anyone who takes it for your condition.( surgery related pain,bones and such etc...)

My limited experience of bup is that you just don't get any sort of high out it. Take enough of it (in my case, 3 or 5 0.2mg sublingual pills, and you'll get good analgesia, slowed breathing, disturbed/no sleep and a heady hangover feeling in the morning. These are just my experiences though. I've never known it bring any sort of euphoria.

But we're all different: there's a member of this group who regularly sits down to a cold-water extraction of 32 7.5mg dihydrocodeine/APAP pills and feels like he's in Heaven. When I try the same I get insomnia and a headache, while a cold-water extraction of, say 64 x 8mg codeine/APAP pills gives me a most enjoyable nod.

Thanx 4 ur replies. just got home from the first dr.-monitored dose. i started at 1230. i did actually feel a little euphoria, like maybe on the order of 1.5-2 percs, but dr. said this goes away after first 3 days or so. also feeling some analgesia but not alot. btw, whats a "cold-water extraction" dr. diesel?

are you serious? Anyone who would give you the most addictive drug on earth and sub par for pain reliefe for pain should be jailed ! I cant believe what im hearing. I assume your are just joking and not that ignorant to opiates.

Actually Methadone is being used more often for chronic pain. Because if it's stigma, it was not a drug of choice for patients with chronic pain.
Because of it's long half-life, it is now being used more often, which results in better pain control.
Of course, those who are taking it for pain, don't often need the high doses that those on it for Maintenance therapy do for addiction.
The average dose is anywhere from 2-8 mgs every 6-8 hours.
While other drugs such as Fentanyl, MS, are still being used to treat chronic pain, Methadone is making it's way into the spot light for pain control.

I say stay on the the oc's if hes goning to give you bup anyway take the drugs for pain then the bup for the drugs ( someone just give me a Phd. all ready!")
