Hi folks,
I bought three kilos of dried leaf Kratom to treat my alcohol dependence. It seems to help but it is a meesy process dealing with all of the leaves and a pain to transport to buddy who like the herb. Does anyone know how to turn leaves into and extract of some sort? I have seen it in extract form but i dont have a recipe. I figure with 3 keys I should have enough to play with in case I ruin a patch.
Thanks!

The following is the 'generic' method of making a tincture.
Cover 200g dried or 300g fresh herb with vodka or rum in a bottle, seal the bottle and leave for a about 2 weeks, shaking the bottle every 2 days or so. Put a piece of cloth inside a sieve and pour the liquid through, pressing down to extract as much of the liquid as possible. Discard the solid matter. Pour the tincture into dark bottles, seal and label. A tincture has a much stronger action than an infusion or a decoction.
Be careful on the dosage when using tinctures. Some can be fairly potent.

do you just want to "cover" the leaves or should you ad extra to help the extratcion. Also, would higher proof alchol work beter?? i.e. everclear or the likes?

This is going to take some experimentation on your part to get a end result that you are happy with.
Higher proof will work better. I usually just use good ol 90-100 proof vodka though for my herbal tinctures. Tinctures are really pretty easy to prepare, it just take a little time. I use a 4:1 ratio, which means 1 part herb to 4 parts liquid. Your alcohol can only absorb so much. I've never made a tincture with Kratom, but I assume it would work like any other herb or plant material.
After you make it to the final product, start out small on your initial dosage and work your way up. Some of these preparations can be stronger than you expect.

I found the equivilant of german everclear today. I did a rough 3:1 mixture because of the high alcohol. I wll let you know how it comes out. Can you evaporate part of the tinture to decrease the alcohol content but kepp the alkaloids???

You can definitely evaporate the alcohol on any tincture. Just be careful with your dosages, sometimes those things can be more potent than you expect.

kratom alkaloids can defy water born and alcohol type extractionsunless you do a refluxed ethanol extraction. I have tried a ethanol extracted kratom tincture, the herb was reflux extracted 10 times and the resulting gram of tincture I recieved was roughly equivalent to 100 grams of kratom. if you are just extracting kratom with water you need to get some acid in there, like 30% lime juice to water or some 5% vinegar to fully strip the kratom alkaloids, I dont think the fresh leaf is quite as stubborn, but I have noticed that commercial leaf still has alkaloids in it after being made into tea 2-3 times....
I used to make tea and then on the third time, after freezing the leaf in the freezer, I would boil for a last time in 30% lime juice and water solution.
that would about get it all.
