Check out this article in Los Angeles;s weekly paper (one of them, the best) called Citybeat. The authour is Mick Farren, a sci-fi novelist and rocker/rock critic. His essays are often the highlights of the paper, and his blog, Doc 40 is a highlight amongst blog;s i've visited. In fact, it was in replying to a thread about cool websites that I realized i ought to share this article with everyone in it's own thread. Here ya go:

Some DEA or State Dept official always says, "the opium trade is funding the terrorists"...well it's also funding a big chunk of the nonterrorist, regular farmer in Afghanistan. They were much poorer under the Taliban when they couldn't grow the opium poppies. Its interesting that the Taliban prohibited growing poppies but now that they're on the outs they'll take the money they can get from growing them...just my .02
