View Full Version : Alternatives for WD's...
The Mayor

Curious about a couple of things... I can get through the physical parts of wd, (not without agony) but the one thing that plagues me is the depression. I have been put on prozac, but I can't tell anything, though I've been on it a month. Do any of these things (wellbutrin, paxil, zoloft, prozac ect.) fill the void for post-opiate depression? Does anyone have experience with any of this? Any insights would be appreciated... thanks.

I have experience with Wellbutrin. It does work well to combat post-opiate depression. However, since it has some stimulant properties, it can heighten agitation and anxiety if you start to take it in withdrawal. Therefore, it is recommended that you start taking it a couple weeks BEFORE you begin the opiate withdrawal, to minimize such a possible effect. Start with a low dose, of course.
Wellbutrin is a pretty good AD. It has virtually no sexual side effects and provides a decent energy boost, which is especially good for post-opiate lack of energy. Apparently, it's also a popular med for adult ADD.
Let me know if you have any other questions about it.

wellbutrin is your best bet, also drink passion flower tea every nite if you can... make your own with the herb and make it strong.
the drug does give you a boost, but after about 45 days the boost blends into your everyday life and you don't notice it anymore. of course you get adjusted much earlier than that, probably with 2-3 weeks.
PAWS (post acute withdrawal syndrome) is the worst part of detox, and it goes on for months, maybe years, depending on how long you used.

I can offer allot of info on this for you as I suffer from bouts of severe depression. When I'm on opiates for my back I found my depression went away but when I stoped after being on it for awhile my depression gradually came back. Part of it was withdrawl and part just my chemistry. Well I did some research on the problem and I found out that opiates cause the brain to release extra Dopamine which is one of the main chemicals in the brain that causes pleasure. So I asked my doc to try me on the old antidepressant's called tricyclic antidepressants or TCA. They work on allot of different chemicals including dopamine. I also managed to get put on a small dose of Ritalin which wasent hard cause I have ADD. Well both drugs worked but the Ritalin helped allot, it helped me get out of that malaise, feeling like shit feeling that lingers on after withdrawl. So if you can manage to get some give it a try, just take it normally cause it lasts longer that way. Ask a doc about the old antidepressants to cause there great for that stuff, and they help with the physical pain, especially one called Amitriptyline. Good luck man.

Wellbutrin out of all the one's you mentioned would be the best one IMO mayor but it is kinda speedy I don't really like any of the other one's but that is just me. But if you can get scripted but Amitriptlyne is one of my favorites to smoke with herb nice warm glow. but I think the PAWS as HOM stated there isn't much to fill that its hard to not think of it
