I thought "Requiem for a Dream" was about the best one out there, and it is an oldie. That movie is worth showing in high school classrooms.

I was watching 28 days also the other day, well only the 1st half, got bored w/ it fast.
Now before everyone yell I suck and have no taste.....I never liked Requiem for a dream, not the story I liked the story alot or anything like that, just how it was made, all the cut away scenes, flash to this to that, didn't like it thought it was poorly done.

I always thought Requiem was kind of corny. It's like one of those old drug education films, directed by a music video director. If you use heroin your girlfriend will turn into a superwhore, your arm will fall off, and you'll end up in jail.

I liked the story behind Requiem, it was a very emotional film and I thought the acting was good. It wasn't exactly realistic as regarding the drugs, but I don't feel like the drugs were the point. It was a story of having a dream in contemporary america, and that dream dieing. Literally, it is a requiem for a dead dream.

How come no one has mentioned Jesus' Son with Billy Crudup and Jack Black? It's definitely one of my favorites. Drugstore Cowboy and Bright Lights, Big City are another two. Also, what about Layer Cake and Dead Ringers?

What about Less than Zero with Robert Downey Jr?
Has anyone ever seen Christiane F.? It's a pretty old school german movie with horrible voice dubbing but an awesome David Bowie soundtrack! It looked pretty stupid when I rented it, but it turned out to be one of my favorite drug movies.
I think my all time favorite has to be Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. You may or may not classify this as a drug movie, but it is the greatest Russ Meyer movie ever! It also has a great decapitation scene whiile one of the charaters freaks out on peyote. A must see.
As much as i like Goodfellas, I don't think it counts as a drug movie. It's a mob movie with a few drug scenes.

Less Than Zero pissed me off so much. It's "based" on a book by Bret Easton Ellis, the guy who wrote American Psycho and Rules of Attraction.
The book was about a group of cynical, soulless teens, who used coke and other drugs constantly, fucked each other, and near the end a group of boys rape and murder a young girl, treating the whole thing like a joke.
The movie, on the other hand, was a typical 1980's antidrug movie. The characters had the same names, and they used a bunch of coke, but that's where the similarities ended. In the book, they all used tons of coke, loved it, and kept on using it. In the movie the main character has a cheesy revelation that cocaine is bad, and throws away his stash. The book is essentially about a group of kids who are so rich, shallow and spoiled that they don't have any kind of morals. The movie is about a troubled teen who learns that drugs are bad and turns his life around.
American Psycho was pretty close to the book... imagine if American Psycho was about a stockbroker who used a lot of cocaine, and after doing a whole lot of coke one night, has a nightmare where he kills someone and wakes up in a cold sweat. Then decides to turn his life around, quit cocaine, and lives happily ever after.
Then you'd have an idea of how the movie of Less Than Zero completely ruined the book. I think Robert Downey Jr's drug problems were some sort of karmic retribution for being involved in such a butchering of a book. It's not even supposed to be a drug movie, really. It's supposed to be about how amoral these teens are. The movie makes it seem like they're all horrible people because they use cocaine.

I never said that Less than Zero was a great movie. I've read the book and I agree that the movie has nothing to do with it. It's kinda like that cheesy 80's movie that you like, but you don't know why.

:) for all intensive purposes i agree. That movie discourages me, not from Opiates of course...just discourages me. Its kinda depressing in a way...fucked up if you ask me. That movie makes opiate users look like scum and misrepresents everything.
I thought i would add, If you use H your chick will become a superwhore, arm falling off, jail time and youll even steal your Moms TV repeadetly. LOL. I dont like requiem. peace
Buffalo Soldier with Joaquin Phoenix and Anna Paquin and for some Japanese movies try Junk Food and Tokyo Decadence.
Bad Lieutenant for an oldy but a goody... And the wife likes Gia (Angelina Jolie) for pure excess...

I'm still laughing over that one. It's like a SNL skit line or some thing.

Yeah, requiem was a bunch of bullshit. I am pissed at the great actors who played parts, for being part of such a lame-ass production.

I thought Requiem for a Dream was a great movie. Any movie that can make you feel real emotions is a good one in my book. I literally felt sick to my stomach at the end of that movie. The way the movie was made was easily overlooked by me but i'll admit it was annoying at times.
Not to mention the music in that movie is incredible, you know the song Lord of the Rings stole.

Oh! I just thought of a very good one that you should all see. It's about drug trade and gang violence in Rio de Janeiro and it's actually based on a true story.
If you like movies about drugs or you just flat out like movies please check this film out. The film is subtitled beginning to end but you won't regret picking this one up, trust me.

Some people find the scenes of pupils dilating quite irritating, because even though they shoot heroin, their pupils enlarge, not go pinpoint, as they should...
Then again, who gives a flying f**k?

One of my very favorite heroin movies and probably one of the first that was reality based was "Cristian F." The film was based on real life 14 year old German addict Christian. The film was made in the seventies and has great music. David Bowie performs. Warning the withdrawal scenes are very intense, very real. **** four stars Great film

Here is one i saw recently...They got it on Netflix..
"Story of a Junkie"
Director Lech Kowalski unstintingly documents the drug scene that was rampant throughout Manhattan's Lower East Side during the early 1980s. Kowalski's subject is heroin addict John Spaceley, whose street name is Gringo. He travels around Manhattan flophouses and brings the camera with him as he shoots the breeze with drug dealers and mainliners. But filming aside, the primary purpose of Gringo's drifting is to feed his smack habit.

It's kind of about music, but "Dig!", about the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols. It's funny to watch that guy Anton crash the CMJ showcase in new york, WASTED on rollerblades, talkin about, "I am the future of music." It's like burn-out jackass with good (er ..decent) music. That guy is out of his mind.
And also about rocknroll (oh and drugs too) is "Cocksucker Blues". SUPER hard to find. saw it on VHS at a brooklyn video place. Shot on awful early 70's video by photographer Robert Frank. It follows the Rolling Stones through ... i don't really fucking remember. Radio interviews, concerts, and LOTSSSS of cocaine. Their manager has a plate w/ appx a half oz on it, little spoon too. Casually says, "oh this stuff's the best!" They are just walking around jerked on great coke in the midle of the afternoon. Topless girls on an airplane. very random.
Their management worked on severely restricting distribution. It's bootleg....

So I just saw a new one that I haven't seen mentioned yet, "Candy" It's based on the book Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction. I haven't read the book, but I thought the movie was great. The movie is about the life of a young Australian couple, their love for eachother, and their Herion addiction. Here's a link if you want to read more about it.

For the people who thought Requiem sucked, did you guys get the point of the movie (or what I thought it was anyways) - that you have two people out there, one person gets their drugs legally and loses everything, well worse, her mind, and the other guy gets his drugs illegally and he loses everything. I thought they were making a point about the drugs laws in 'merica.
Other good movies, The Trip - ok not good, corny LSD tripping movie with Jack Nicholson I believe - talk about an oldie!
Permanent Midnight - true story about a Hollywood writer who gtes drawn into heroin. Ben Stiller plays it strangley enough. I was sure I would never fuck with that shit after I saw the movie - wrong

I have a GREAT restored DVD copy of this...AWESOME! A must for any serious Stones fan---this is the film they didn't want you to see. It has never been 'officially' released, but there are good copies floating around--if anyone's interested, PM me or I'll post a link to where I got mine.

I read the book, too. awesome. My favorite scene in that flick (which was NOT in the book) is when him and Big G are smoking crack in an empty office, up on the 20th floor. They take huge hits, then run full on into the plexiglass window. Great analogy for the crack high.
Best scene in the book that didn't make the movie is when he takes chloral hydrate to try to sleep thru monster WD's. He wakes up cover in his own piss, half paralyzed, and gets in his car to cop.
