It's list night. Just did a top 50 albums elsewhere, in response to the NPR list.
Off the top of my head:
City Lights, Chaplin, 1931
Big Lebowski, Coen Bros, 1998
The Godfather, Part II, Coppola, 1974
Wages of Fear, Clouzot, 1953
Last Tango in Paris, Bertolucci, 1972
High and Low, Kurosawa, 1963
Youth Without Youth, Coppola, 2007
Tetro, Coppola, 2009
Manhattan, Allen, 1979
Vertigo, Hitchcock, 1958
I could go with Shadow of a Doubt or North by Northwest for Hitchcock, Ambersons, Touch of Evil, or Magnificent Ambersons for Welles, any number for Kurosawa or Allen or the Coens.
Sinful omissions: no Billy Wilder, Aldomovar, Rohmer, Ford, Hawks, Pabst, Murnau, Ashby, blah blah blah.
And yeah, it's pretty Coppola heavy. I didn't even include Apocalypse Now.
There are like, 100. And then I'd still have to make apologies. But I could watch any of those movies, pretty much any time.

yes it is a modern adptation, very politically charged..
some of my friends found it lacked energy, charcter development
but these peoplebeing depicted are suppose to be the Facists Pasolini
despised & he had lots of reasons, being a freethinker & gay..
see some of his less controversial scenes he has focused a lot onthe
underbelly of Italy of his times, his writing is decent too but I've yet
to only read one novel (Petrolio) and some poems..

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I had never even heard of it when I first saw it and was pleasantly surprised. I love watching movies when you have absolutely no idea what to expect.
There are also so many movies I didn't even think of when making my list that I later noticed on other people's lists. Like, for example, The Green Mile or Gran Torino. I'd also like to add Million Dollar Baby to my list - excellent movie. Being a movie lover, I could never narrow it down to favorites but it's still fun to see what everyone's tastes are. I enjoying seeing people's varying preferences.

"Conan The Barbarian" has one of the best lines of any movie I've watched. It sunk in my head the very first time I saw it. Conan is asked, "What is best in life?" and he gives the classic answer. "To destroy your enemies , see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of their women." Even though Arnold may not have been the best actor at the time it's still a really good movie and they were smart enough to have Mako narrate and star as a wizard.

A lot of people forget or don't know that Conan was before Arnolds breakout role in The Terminator. And although Arnold will never be considered a great thespian his acting in Conan is just awesome. There are so many scenes where you can just see the rage and hatred, the determination for vengence in his eyes, I just think it's awesome...
And to Motown and mikey5, I love Better Off Dead, it's one of the funniest movies most people don't know about. "what's your name?" "Charles DeMar"....."Shut up, geek"......great line

2- WIZARD OF OZ
( 1ST real trippy drug movie EVER)
that's like saying Dark Side of the Moon is the first psychedelic album ever. did you know they made movies across the sea as well? and some older movies fly slightly under the radar (Wizard of Oz isn't quite the most obscure, twisted experimental film, u know?) haha...

i hate to do this but i saw that someone mentioned Twilight as the best movie of all time and i just have to say this.....
Twilight is a piece of shit fucking emo vampire love story. its a fucking garbage love tale that outcast teenage girls get brainwashed by. "ooh im a gay looking vampire and i wanna fuck this werewolf oh help me." i mean seriously. this movie is a disgrace to vampire and/or werewolf movies. i swear every girl that loves it is completely consumed by it. my ex musta watched it 100x within the first week the dvd came out and read all the books like 100 times each. her and her roommates had their room completely covered wall to wall with gay ass twilight posters and blankets and pictures and shit. i cant fucking stand it. you want a good vampire werewolf film with a lil bit of love in it watch any of the Underworld flicks. i mean seriously the first piece of shit has been out for a while now and its still the number 1 move on Comcast On Demand, number 1 in DVD sales, and the books are in the top 5 in sales. its like these fuckin little wanna be goth teenage bitches dont feel loved so they have to obsess over the jerkoffs that pretend to be good actors in the movie.
sorry for the rant but every time i hear someone say Twilight is the best movie ever or Twilight is amazing or whatever i just freak out....the movie is pure garbage....AND IVE NEVER EVEN SEEN IT!!!!!! i just cannot stand seeing these fucking little brats with that cocksuckers(the main dude in the movie) face all over their clothes and schoolbags and walls, when in reality the movie is a sorry excuse for a vampire/werewolf movie. thats the other thing the fuckin people brainwashed by it swear its the greatest vampire/werewolf movie of all time...get the fuck outta here how bout bram stoker's dracula, an american werewolf in london, the wolfman, from dusk til dawn, nosferatu, the howling.....shit the list goes on and on and twilight fits nowhere in that list...its a pussy ass teenage love story that the author of the book thought would bee cool and gothic and edgy to make it have to do with mythological creatures.

It's based on a book by the same name. Basically the plot is the main character played by Elijah Wood goes to Ukraine to find out more about his family's life b4 they where forced to flee the country prior to Nazi invasion during WWII. He is an odd individual with a nack for collecting things from his relatives past which he then places into evidence bags (ziplocks) & pins them to a wall in his house beneath respective family member's portrait. He gets hooked up with a tour agency thing which is a business run by a quirky family..thats where the journey towards illuminating Elijahs grandfathers dark past begins tying in all the characters; the reality which comes to light is a gloomy one yet it's delivered in an oft. comical way which makes this a drama slash comedy & not simply a dry former..
I wrote something about this in the "wristcutters (http://forum.opiophile.org/showthread.php?t=26822)" thread, also a great film with a character of Eugene based on the lead singer from Gogol Bordello, who is a co-star in Everything is Illuminated (the young Alex):
gogol is really unique..if you like Eugene watch "Everything is Illuminated" trust me
he is acting in it & the soundtrack is GB mostly as well as Devotchka (sic?), Leningrad etc,.
plays a hillarius Ukranian hipster who is obsessed with Michael Jackson, wears tracksuits
but sadly had to shave his bushy 'stash for the role

Clerks, StarWars(Empire if I had to choose), Jackie Brown, Superfly, Taxi Driver. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, House Party, and Friday.

It's based on the book by the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer about a American Jewish dude who travels back to the Ukraine in search of his dead relatives who disappeared during WWII. He is aided in his search by Alex, and young Ukrainian man who has a fucking hilarious take on American culture and grasp of English, Alex's "blind" grandfather, and his "seeing eye bitch" (a boarder collie named Sammy Davis Junior, JR).
Elijah Wood plays the Jew, and Eugene Hutz plays Alex, don't know who played the gramps.
It's a great movie, very funny. Definitely check it out.
