In the south, the two most well known recreational uses of opiates are sizzurp and hillbilly heroin. This being the case, and with media frenzy over oxycodone at an all time feverpitch- the area of Western NC, that I'm familiar with, is reportedly getting a methadone clinic.

The only real opposition argument I've heard, is that users will now flock to Western NC to be able to use the clinic.

So, being as I have no experience with methadone, I'm curious to know if there's any anecdotal evidence of users moving to be near a clinic...

I'd say it's accurate that most "hillbilly heroin"-oxycodone users in the rural south aren't near methadone clinics, but I don't see the majority of those users as having the financial resources or incentive to move to a methadone clinic.

Thoughts ?

I've only heard of folks driving long distances at my old clinic, not moving. I don't believe it. If its inconvenient, what junky is going to spend the money to move before getting on at the clinic?

I think its awful that you guys are forced to travel (or even move nearer) to a meth clinic because there isn't one in your local area. Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know here in the uk that just doesn't happen, at least not in terms of the distances that you are forced to travel. I live in a small town but we have our own meth clinic which provides a service to those of us in about a 20 mile radius, ie. smaller towns and villiages in the area.

Yup, it's the NIMBY syndrome, as with all new clinics.. Not In My Back Yard!

That arguement, that users will move for a clinic, is absolutely absurd. How the hell can someone who needs a meth clnic just afford to up and move, leaving job/family/etc, just to cop? Not gonna happen. Yes, a lot of folks will travel crazy distances each day (even car pool, i've seen that), but not up and move.

It's just a cheap excuse to keep it out of their lives.. It frightens them. Misinformation is key here.

Good luck, I relly hope it works out for you!

Exactly how far west in NC are you? There are no less than 6 meth clinics in the Piedmont.
I am pretty sure that Asheville has at least one. And of course perhaps to a bit more extreme level you know what lies in the hills of Black Mountain.

Would move to the moon for dope.
Wouldn't move my bowels for done.

Actually, I don't remember coming across anyone in my travels who had moved for a clinic, but given some of the wackos I ran into, such a thing might not have seemed so memorable. People would drive 5 hours a day before they would move. that sucks

On the other hand, I and one other person I knew moved for dope.

And then there's the ones who move to get away from it.

HEY...Maybe we could set up an addict exchange program??? patent pending

I used to live in Asheville and there are two clinics in the area WNCTC is the best. Many people drive from tennessee just to get there.

When they first opened the private clinic in Lake Charles Louisiana, everybody in Lafayette would just carpool the hr ride. I was the last holdout among hard opiate crew between Morgan City and Lafayette. Only when K4 dilaudids disappeared, and everybody started snitching off the "good" docs, that I ended up making that morning ride. I finally fled. I fought being on it then, I fight being on it now. I feel that people buy stock in the pharmaceutical industry that produces oxycontin also own stock in private clinic conglomerates. Interesting how oxycontin and proliferation of private methadone clinics went hand in hand. Everybody else has conspiracy theories, why not me?

I gotta lot of pals on methadone, straightened up their lives, no offense intended, this is personal thing...just gives me a bad feeling, like I'm trapped, like I've bought into something...No buzz, I'm owned by the clinic.

Just me, I know...kind of like voting for Nixon: he got us out of Vietnam, but it still felt wrong, like I'd sold out. And now subs. These fucks. Finally found something that will get you totally strung out without any buzz at all: try inventing a whiskey without any high: become a totally addicted alcoholic without ever once getting naked and singing "Danny Boy" at 4 in the morning in your neighbor's yard.

I know people that travel pretty far to go to the clinic. I know that I got into a situation where I either had to transfer to another clinic or detox. I tried to detox but it was too much to fast and i wasnt ready yet so i had to take the transfer. I had to drive 1/2-45 minutes out of my way every day. It sucked because the clinic that i goto now is but 10 minutes from my house!! ya know what else sucked about it- the transfer my boyfriend had to transfer too well he had just gotten onto the clinic, well he had to pay the intake fees all over again. What a f-in joke that was! And then 6 months later we were able to go back to the clinic that was 10 minutes from our house and they made him pay AGaIN!!!
People say you will drive to go get your dope then you will drive to get your methadone!
