View Full Version : Wristcutters
I recently watched the movie Wristcutters: A Love Story and really enjoyed it. Anyone ever see it? It's an interesting indie movie set in a strange afterlife where people go who have committed suicide. It follows a man as he searches for his girlfriend after he finds out that she, too, killed herself not long after he did.
While searching for his girlfriend, he meets some interesting people along the way. He meets a girl who is trying to find the "People in Charge" because she claims that she did not commit suicide. It turns out she accidentally killed herself via heroin overdose and many people say that she has a good argument.
I won't give any of the plot away but I really like it because it didn't follow the typical linear storyline. One of my favorite things about it is how the characters adjust and cope with the new, not much better, world they now find themselves in. It is common in this afterlife for people to guess how other people killed themselves and it's become the new "So, how's the weather?"
I recommend it to those of you who, like me, are sick of the average Hollywood garbage that pollutes our movie theaters these days. I'm not sure when it came out as I had never even heard of it. I found it at Blockbuster.

Enjoy.

Ha, I kinda thought people would think that. Changed the title but I don't think it worked.

Yeah I loved this movie. It's hilarious how when you commit suicide the world in the afterlife is pretty much the same except that everything is just a little bit shittier and more frustrating.:D

Saw it recently on Sundance Channel--it was an interest idea and unusual enough to hold me interest.
Not typical Horriwoood fare.
One guy who was always trying to do cool things like the others, such as floating, but couldn't 'cause he was "trying too hard!" Good life analogy!!

First of all, it's always nice with a good movie recommendation, so thanks for that.
However:
I recommend it to those of you who, like me, are sick of the average Hollywood garbage that pollutes our movie theaters these days.
You DO know that it's just as ignorant to bash a movie on the merits of the studio or environment that produced it, sheepishly following some "alternative" esthetic, as it is to go watch the latest Adam Sandler flick, just because Adam Sandler is in it. Right?
Just thought your recomendation would have been just as good and relevant without a snide and elitist jab in it...

Just watched it, ending was sweet, but kinda predictable. Didn't make a lot of sense, but was good.

it's great & i love the eastern european character,
the music was gogol bordello mostly which was fitting
since Eugenes character was partially based on Eugene from Gogol

In my experience 90% of the cutters I've known were either severely mentally, physically and/or sexually abused during the formative years. That and nail-biting seem to correlate to abuse early on.

Well, I downloaded it, watched it..... and wasn't terribly impressed. Yeah, it turned my TV into a talking lamp for an hour or so, but aside from that, it was nothing special. No real character development, not plot development, 'twists' and sub-plots that weren't followed through, and in general a pretty weak movie.
It killed some time, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.
!!!
I remember watching this movie a few years ago.
This is one of my favorite movies ever...it's so funny \ witty at times...the car seat with the black hole, the russian guy who's whole family offed themselves, lolol...fucking awesome flick.

gogol is really unique..if you like Eugene watch "Everything is Illuminated" trust me
he is acting in it & the soundtrack is GB mostly as well as Devotchka (sic?), Leningrad etc,.
plays a hillarius Ukranian hipster who is obsessed with Michael Jackson, wears tracksuits
but sadly had to shave his bushy 'stash for the role
I can sugges a few likeminded musicians if u like that sorta thing. some keywords:
eastern bloc, gypsy punk/jazz, dark cabaret (good umbrella term). Most def. listen to
"Man Man" they are less punky then GB yet his voice & the instrumentation is beautiful
not to even go into the lyrics as this would require a total thread hijack

i wasnt expecting a whole lot, but it was a pretty clever feel-good comedy, and waits was the icing on the cake. i didn't dig the main kid cause of his role in Teeth (the second nerd who gets his dick chomped off), but he ends up being likeable as hell.
when i worked at a videostore we couldnt keep this shit on the shelves, everyone seemed to dig it. except old people and babies and black people of all ages.
