Im going to an inpatient detox and my doctor wants me to try a 14 day methadone taper.

I dont take methadone now, just pods and seed tea.

Ive never heard of a short term methadone detox like this......Anyone heard about this and would it work with less pain than cold turkey?

After to detox im going to rehab...for the second time in my life.

This sort of detox is common. For many it is effective at least to get you off of your DOC.

It's what I used to kick an IV H habit...it can be done, and I found it to be a marked improvement over a similar detox with buprenorphine.

It is pretty common, although lots of people find the suboxone taper easier too. They both work. With pods, I've tried suboxone, but not methadone. WHile I found it easy to switch, when I quit the suboxone I started pods fairly quickly again. I didn't have significant physical withdrawal from the subs, but wasn't ready to be completely clean.

Glad to hear its more common than I thought.

After detox they take me directly to rehab and I want to be clear headed when I arrive, and that makes me think a opiate with a shorter half life would be better, like same idea byt use morphine instead.

Im even considering cold turkey from opiates if they will allow it and give me something for sleep.

I dont think they will let me go cold trukey, in fact I had to beg for a methadone detox and they really pressured me for methadone long term, the trouble is rehab wont accept me if Im not detoxed or on methadone....and they are REALLY PUSHING THE METHADONE on me.

I don't know how big your habit is, but seems to me, that using methadone for just getting off pods and seeds is... Well stupid. And like shooting mice with bazookas.

Yeah, seriously... If your habit is just some pod and seeds, you should be able to it cold turkey no problem. Trust me, you'll have plenty of time for methadone ;)

I would agree with you if it was longterm, but for a taper that won't really get you hooked on methadone I think it would be pretty effective.

I would think the OP will be much more comfortable going this route than going cold turkey.

Good luck!

i thought short term methadone taper for detox had gone out of favour... they don't use it here anymore that i know of. I wouldve preferred that much more to cold turkey or bupe i reckon.

Buckshot, did you used to use other opiates - for example before your last rehab stint, or just pods?? Have u ever been on long term methadone? They will never give you morphine taper..

Actually OQ, Duckfeet was put on an Oxycontin taper once.
And you have a point Chemical Boy... Thing is though: Methadone is such a powerful opiate, I wouldn't really touch it under those circumstances. And with the longass halflife, OP will probably feel way shittier 3 weeks after starting the taper, than he would if he'd just quit CT to start with.

I was at 140 mg of methadone, was going to have it come down by like 5mg a day, but I came down by 10mg per day, over a 14-day period. I got caught shooting up the methadone pills at the detox and was cut off while still at 40 mg...I was fine. It was a miracle that the withdrawals never came, to this day I can't explain it. I felt pretty damn good through the entire thing, didn't really have ANY symptoms for some reason. I've been through so, so, so many hellish detoxes and many sleepless nights tossing and turning away in a sweat-soaked bed in the throes of dopesickness - I'm so grateful that I don't have to feel that way ever again. It all depends on your habit for the taper. Took me about a month or so to get back to a somewhat more 'normal' sleeping cycle, and after about 3 months I felt almost completely physically different. Now at 7 months, I feel like a totally different person. Again, the changes vary between all people and are dependent on a variety of factors.

man, don't underestimate pods & seeds, get a daily habit for a few years, escalating dosage as tolerance goes up and the withdrawals are as nasty as anything.

they'd probably only start out on say 30mg/day and taper down from there, i had the choice myself to do a 'done detox before i got on subs and thought it sounded like a ridiculous idea. i now wish i'd tried it!

I see your point too. Not sure really what would be the best. If they could taper you with short acting stuff it would be better I would think, but I think they can only do that if you are a pain management patient now. If it is addiction treatment, I think that you can only use methadone or suboxone. I would prefer the methadone (having done the sub detox over about ten days..) just cuz I never had that experience.

Ah well, I will be curious to get an update from OP when this plays out to see how it went.

IF me memory serves right
think OP did a CT kick form pods not long ago
Clean for a time-
then oh course it gets the best of you

have no idea which way to go is best for OP
sounds like he wants REHAB
but can get there without the done

WELL KEEP US UPDATED, GOOD LUCK MANG

PS- if you can, maybe skip every other day w/ done taper
pretty sure 3 weeks on done will get u done habit, even with taper
all depends where u are at now
