Oh God, it's a serious article, too.
Interesting read.
[from the article]:
"Fifteen years ago, people thought this was completely stupid," said Dr. Thomas R. Kosten, a [...]"
LMAO.
Yeah... I heard about that Cocaine "Immunization" that they came up with...
(from my Ever So limited understanding of what is going on with that stuff,) it seems that from a scientific/medical/technical standpoint, what they are doing is pretty impressive-- Attaching the tiny little cocaine molecule to a disabled-virus to try to trick the immune system to attack the coke before it ever reaches the brain...
Everything about how unethical and insane it is, and about how things like Morphine are naturally occurring chemicals in the brain aside, it seems kind of dangerous to start programming your immune system to attack Any specific tiny Molecules-- as opposed to pathogens/viruses/etc...
But then again I guess I know fuck all about anything... But... Thanks for the article, Prof. Duckfeet.......

yeah they've been talking about this for a while. I wouldn't worry, I can't see this being used because of the need for narcotics in painful situations. if narcotics don't work on you then you are pretty much fucked if you get certain kinds of pain in the future.

Yea this has been reported in the media every few years for a decade, even if it ever becomes practical I would hope parents are smart enough NOT to expose their children to this nonsense.

at&t brings up a good point. To me, the immune system is an extremely important part of our survival. It also seems like it's a fragile system, as there are so many things that can affect how well it works.
I know there are common diseases where our own immune systems attack healthy parts of the body, and in those cases it seems like a wise idea to inhibit the system with drugs or whatever... But my immune system seems to be working just fine. I'm not going to fuck with it.
Shit, I put down cocaine years ago, haven't touched the stuff in years. Acid, amphetamines and now even benzos as well. If taking a drug is affecting your life in a seriously detrimental way, you should think pretty hard about QUITTING. How's that for a novel idea?

A wise old man once said No Free Lunch...every few years they come up w/new treatment...I've yet to run across one that was any good, or that worked better at getting over this shit....I can't stand kicking at all anymore, and get strungout on just a few perks, etc.and always, inevitablly, end up back on heroin

Drugs like cocaine and nicotine are comprised of tiny molecules that are too small for the immune system to recognize, allowing them to slip through the body's blood-brain barrier.
What the fuck?

Just like there are several endogenous opiates produced in the body, there may well be some sort of endogenous cocaine-like chemical whose job it is, is to bind similarly to the same place as coke does (pre-synaptic DA-reuptake ?).
You start fucking with the immune system and exogenous chemicals, it could easily begin affecting the endogenous chemicals necessary for a properly-functioning brain.
This could also lead to several types of auto-immune disorders.
Bad idea,

"You have to trick the body into making an antibody response to this small molecule," said Berma M. Kinsey, a research chemist at Baylor who works on cocaine vaccines.
Tricking the body into having its antibody and immune responses attack unnatural threats. Oh great. That is what my system is currently doing and it is considered to be a disease. Strangely, one of the best treatments for it is opiates. Seems like we're going full circle on this one.

it sounds like it is creating antibodies that attack just the cocaine molecule or very similar analogs, this wouldn't effect dopamine. there may be a slight chance there could be problems with dopamine through phenylalanine but I doubt it. modifying our immune system is not a new thing and it isn't necessarily a dangerous or bad thing. by tricking our immune systems in the past people have been able to wipe out polio. what would be bad is if they started forcing people to take it or parents giving their child it. I really doubt this is going to catch on though, especially with opiates. also this didn't sound highly effective, especially if you took large amounts of cocaine.

Fan fucking tastic! Now when I get into a car wreck and break all my ribs and sever a leg, the doc won't be able to give me anything for pain because the opiates will be recognized as "invaders" and my immune system will eat them up, leaving me to feel the full extent of pain caused to my wrecked body. Of course what does it matter if some stupid junky gets pain relief anyways, right? After all we're just all scum of the earth.
What a bunch of bullshit.

Absolute insanity!
Talk about redefining the human experience and the way our bodies were made to interact with our natural surroundings and elements.
Damn people . . . The poppy, coca leaf, and tobacco just to name a few were put on this earth for a reason.
What's next? a vaccination that makes it impossible to experience sexual pleasure because it's of a prurient nature!
Watch these future self righteous religious fanatics get their children immunized for chicken pox, tetanus and while you're at it addiction please.
I'm now speechless!

The scary part of this is a "what if" scenario. What if the government in its war on drugs decides to combine this latest drug vaccination technology into a standard flu vaccine. After all, it can be argued that addiction is just as valid a national health issue as the flu. Add to that fact the idea that cocaine or heroin are schedule I drugs which have no valid reason for existing let alone someone ingesting. So they would merely be aiding in "law compliance" as well as eliminating a threat to national health.

then you might hafta like, break the law or something (first time for everything right? :D)
i don't take any of their "immunizations"
even if they were required, like driver licenses, seatbelts, and soon health insurance
i still wouldn't let myself get stuck with their shit
