I'm also on a (gay) Bulletin Board discussing the annual Sleaze Ball G&L Party (I didn't attend due to the f#*king dogs). The following is the most recent discussion on the growing prescence of the dogs. This is the biggest threat to my social life and wanted to show you guys what's going on here, straight from the trenches. (I'm "Annoyed").

Re: Sun 4 Oct 2009 22:24:26 (http://www.pinkboard.com.au/graffiti/sleaze/G82692)
"I have no idea what makes them pick on some people. Is it just quantity or something else?"

One girl was picked up inside the party with something green in her pocket. Another guy lit up on the dancefloor! Are you both insane? 1. don't bring that into a dance party and 2. don't do that on a crowded dancefloor so everyone around you then smells like a can of PAL!

I agree the party was very good. Thanks NMG you've redeemed yourself after last year's debacle!

re. Busted
I almost got busted the other night in a club. If I hadn't've been generous and given some goodies away to friends, I would be facing the courts right now.

I blame it on GHB. Well, maybe. That and the damn dogs. And what good does it do? It messes up your travel plans and costs you money, time and embarrasment.

Mon 05 Oct 2009 12:54:13 - what do you mean ? what were they doing in the middle of the dance floor ????????????

David - what happened ? what did they do ? did you get taken away or what ? and can I ask what you had and where you had it ?

Best place for arriving is to shove it in a condom and put it you know where. If with a girl where they can
"accommodate" better ? When I went in no police, no
dogs at all. Saw Police all night walking around but no dogs.

And yeah why target dance parties only ? go to the Logies and all those red carpet type events as well

or better still........... if its personal stash leave the people alone to enjoy themselves.

Police could be used to fight real crime instead of piss ant small charges like this.

Even an ex Police Chief from USA who is coming to Australia to talk says drugs should be decriminalised as no country is winning the war on drugs and that Police spend too much time and wasted dollars and if decriminalised wont be as much crime. Imagine if the Pharmaceutical companies could make the stuff ? how genuine it would be.

Anyway good luck David. Hope you come out of it OK.

hahahahahaaa

walking to the party with that knot hanging out is such a pain.

I wonder if you wrapped your stuff in 2-3-4 condoms would the dogs be able to sniff that out ? if you just had it under yr balls ?

hi, in your msg i thought you said 'we all know where to stash it'..when we walked into that wall of dogs there was not a good place to be stashing anything anywhere...i had an e on me.......saw one guy saying no he had no drugs, then being asked by police were they up his bum as they took him away........it was pretty full on. thanks.

Not a chance in the world the dogs can smell them when up yr bum.

Do the police just pick on a few as come on , you could almost guarantee 90% of the crowd walked in with something.

I cant see any cop sticking his finger up yr butt. Are they that desperate for an arrest ?

And wish they would just leave personal stashes alone. Was there any crime there ? no ! let the Police get out amongst all those hideous bashers and people causing problems instead of someone just out to enjoy themselves.

So if you had an e on you where was it ? did the dogs just walk past you ?

I know the sniffer dogs are good but come on , a pill or 2 in a couple of plastic bags ?

There has to be someway around all this crap.

Police @ Sleaze

The cops were being total idiots at Sleaze.

We all expect a police presence but for them to drag a dog that was obviously confused and scared into the crowded Hordern is just cruel.

Suggest that everyone writes to their local member. And the RSPCA too.

How can anyone respect the police when their tactics just suck.

What's next -- drug dogs in your home? This stupid application of modern-day policing has to stop. If you have any ideas, I would love to hear it.

A reply that I found on that same site:

Some semi informed advice re drug detection dogs:

First and most importantly drugs are illegal and can have negative health and social impacts on your life. Just because you have used illicit substances in the past and have not had any negative consequences doesn't mean you never will (mind you this also goes for crossing the road so be careful!)

Second if you don't like the use of dogs or feel that the law needs to be changed then you need to do something about it. Neither of the major political parties are likely to relax the current situation so consider voting for the Greens, other minor parties or independents at the next election. Bitching from behind a computer screen doesn't achieve any thing.

With respect to avoiding getting caught by drug detection dogs there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

* If you don't have any drugs on you can¡¦t get caught. As said in the post above take them before you get there or don't take them at all.

* If you are going to take stuff with you then plan your night and only take what you need. Don't take extras for "in case" or for friends. If you get caught the more you have the worse it is. Explaining that it¡¦s not all for you in the eyes of the police makes you a dealer.

* Take the time to prepare your stash. Using latex gloves put it in a condom or sealable bag. Spray the outside of that with a strong alcohol based cologne and then put that in yet another bag and scent that again. If you're keen do it a third time but be aware this will make a larger parcel that is harder to hide.

* Hide your stuff well. You don't have to make it easy for them to find if they search you. It¡¦s up to you come up with your own hidey spots but we are lucky that a lot of our parties involve costumes so that can be handy. If the police ask you what you¡¦ve got you don¡¦t have to admit to having anything but be warned they can be very convincing that it¡¦s easier to just come clean and hand over. Handing over is the easiest result for them and it won¡¦t get you into any less trouble if you deny, they search and then find something. Police are not allowed to cavity search you, that can only be done by a doctor in a hospital. Believe it or not the police don't really enjoy being bastards if they can't find anything on a reasonably thorough search then they are unlikely to push too far. If you are feeling violated or uncomfortable say so and ask for them to stop and speak with their superior. If you are searched and don't have anything on you then you should register your feelings and complaint with the Council of Civil Liberties or the Police Ombudsman. Its only when you register a complaint that these people that accurate statistics are collected. You should also make a formal complaint with police service themselves.

* If you get caught you are unlikely to be taken away. Normally you will be given a court attendance notice. The less you say or admit to now the more your solicitor has to work with later. Find someone good to represent you but keep in mind that as scary as and as serious as this is it¡¦s not the end of the world and the courts deal with these things every day. It is the magistrate you will need to explain yourself to not the police.

* Turn up with a plan to avoid the dogs. The police are only allowed to search you if the dog sits down next to you. Keep moving the faster you get past them the less chance the dog has a chance to do that. Simply sniffing you as you walk past does not warrant an appropriate indication. When you get there hang back and see how many dogs are in action and where they are. As best you can avoid cues where they have a chance to walk the dog along behind you. If you can¡¦t get straight through ticketing then its best to get in to the middle of things, the police and dogs will work the edge of the crowd. Have your ticket, keys, phone and wallet out so you are not held up at security. If it¡¦s daytime wear sunnies so you can keep an eye out for trouble without being obvious. If the dogs are on the inside as is now becoming common pretend to take a phone call or have some other reason to move away quickly. If you have a friend who doesn't have anything on them have them run decoy and get between you and the dog as your heading the other way. They won't like your friend patting the dog but it¡¦s always a valuable distraction.

* Avoid situations where the police can approach un-noticed. Sitting on the grass at festivals or standing in line waiting for the toilets give the dog plenty of chance to pick up a scent and the first thing you know about it you're being tapped on the shoulder. Sitting on trains and busses on the way to a festival is also a big danger, by far the best idea is to get cab it or walk the last bit if possible. They also like working the smoking areas so be warned.

* The dogs have very sensitive sense of smell but in reality are a pretty blunt instrument for real drug detection. The dogs don't care about drugs for them the whole thing is a game. They are trained to recognise certain specific smells and are then rewarded for sitting down as they're trained to. To them it¡¦s no more significant than fetching a ball and dropping it when hey bring it back. While they are well trained they are also easily distracted and tire quickly. If the dogs have been there for a while its more likely the police have are using them for "high visibility policing" rather than expecting to catch significant numbers of people. I would like some community minded person to take a box or two of Go Cat to the next party and distribute it widely where the dogs are working. The one failing of Labradors is that they are always hungry and that amount of more desirable scent will take their mind off what they should otherwise be doing. Nothing illegal with this but it could certainly be considered a form of passive community resistance ƒº

The above comments should not be taken as advice on how to break the law or in any way suggesting you should do so. It is simply to give you some insight on how to avoid finding yourself in trouble with the law.

I remember watching one of those "Make sure you don't get caught" videos, where this excop explains how the dogs go absolutely apeshit when they smell cats, which pretty much ruins the search. Might be a good idea to put some cathairs in your pockets, if you're really paranoid :)

I never go to a rave, without wearing a kitten around my neck. You know, sorta like the dude from Public Enemy. Except it's not a clock, it's a cat. And I've developed some pretty swell pick up lines to go with it!

Hey on the issue regarding dogs, I think that they are largely just a mechanism to justify unwarranted searches. Only the dogs master (whoever his officer is) knows the dog's signal for detecting drugs/bombs/what-have-you. IMO, I think that if the officer suspects you of carrying anything illegal, or has his/her mind set on takin ya down, they will pass off any sudden movement the dog makes as probable cause.

"Oh hey, you see that? The dog is making a panting noise". Or "Hey, he has been sniffing that area for one minute. That's probable cause". What do you guys think about that?

I never go to a rave <snip>

Neither do I.

The music is very different when compared to what you would hear at raves. My friends and I hosted one and have been to another couple. That was enough for me, though.

The GLBTQI (Gay,Lesbian,Bisexual,Transgender,Queer,Intersex) music scene is more diverse and factional than straight folks realise.

The highly skilled audio and visual professionals are truly brilliant -- they deliver rich, layered soundscapes with slow and sexy beats with lighting to match--I can still feel the sexual undertones even though I don't understand it.

It's not just a party, it has a significantly high social value where people who are often persecuted (and we know all about that as junkies) can express themselves without judgement or worse, condemnation.

Unfortunately, I cannot interact except by dancing with the crowd and not anyone in particular. I'm on the fringe.
