ADDICTS' LATEST TARGET: FENTANYL PATCHES
Users Bite the Patch, Inject Gel That Contains Synthetic Narcotic
ST. LOUIS - Justin Knox bit down on the bitter-tasting patch, instantly releasing three days' worth of a drug more powerful than morphine. He was dead before he even got to the hospital.
The 22-year-old construction worker and addict was another victim in an apparent surge in U.S. overdoses blamed on abuse of the fentanyl patch, a prescription-only product that is intended for cancer patients and others with chronic pain and is designed to dispense the medicine slowly through the skin. "I cannot tell you the amount of people I've seen and the creative ways they abuse this drug," said Dr. Scott Teitelbaum, director of the Florida Recovery Center in Gainesville, Fla. "Fentanyl has been abused for years. But recently there has been an increase. I've seen more chewing, squeezing of the drug off the patch and shooting it up."
Fentanyl, a synthetic narcotic, was introduced in the 1960s, but it was not until the early 1990s that it became available in patch form. Last year, the first generic versions of the patch hit the market.
At least seven deaths in Indiana and four in South Carolina since 2005 have been blamed on abuse of the fentanyl patch, along with more than 100 deaths in Florida in 2004. About a week after Knox's death in Farmington, Mo., in March, a second man in the same county was prescribed the patch legally and died after injecting himself with the gel that he had scraped from it. Emergency-room visits by people misusing fentanyl shot up nearly 14-fold to 8,000 nationwide between 2000 and 2004, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The figures do not indicate how many of those ER visits were because of the patch.
In Missouri, the man accused of illegally selling the fentanyl patch to Knox has been charged with murder.
"The awareness is just not out there. I had never heard of this patch," said Knox's mother, Rose Marler. "There's a new generation of drugs and people just need to be aware."

Strange how they came out with the black box warnings on anti depressants when teens etc were commiting suicide while on them, why not just put big warnings on the fent patches as well? seems like the US just wants to blame and lump opiates and the terrorists as one evil force or something. I hope someday soon, they look at opiates in a whole new light and realize their benefits, especially for minority type of people like me who only respond best to opiate based medication for pain relief and depression as well. Wish I knew the right people to talk to the right way to try to have them understand our plight and mine as well.

WOW! No personal responsibility to the user? How they can charge the supplier with murder is nutz to me. Our justice system really fucks up our definition of personal responsibility.

DaOxyMan, fentanyl doesn't suck, you just didn't get enough. 25 microcrams is a very, very tiny amount.
If you do a rough comparison, .25 mgs of fentanyl is equal to about only 25 mgs of oxycodone. Good enough for someone with no tolerance, but with a tolerance, it's nothing. So if you have any kind of tolerance to oxy, for example let's say, a habit of 200 milligrams of oxycodone a day, you'd need about 2 milligrams of fentanyl, or 2 THOUSAND micrograms, to achieve similar relief in analgesia.
And from what I've heard, while fentanyl is an excellent analgesic, it's ability to enduce euphoria is not as great as some of the other classic opiates.

I just tried my first rail of avinza this morning [2 -60mg capsules] It was harshly wonderful. I'm a new member and this site is the best thing since I first discovered opiates. Now I got somewhere to hang out without being in public.[ The public is a buzzkill]

I shot a fentanyl patch once. As I hazily recall, all I did was scrape out the gel, dilute with a syringe full of water, and heat it up in the spoon. It was a 50mg (?) patch.
I DID NOT like the feeling it gave me, like I was on fire and by chest was going to blow open. I have an extremely high tolerance to all kinds of opiates.
I would not recommend messing around with fentanyl to people 'new' to opiates. And for god's sake, don't be breaking them down and putting them up your arm.

fentanyl abuse was first reported in the 70s and it's extremely likely that it has been abused since the 60s. big deal, 100 or so deaths is a drop in the fucking bucket, especially when you consider the potency of this drug. fuck media hype. these type of sensationlist writers give journalism a bad name.

If you are in possesion of something as potentially lethal as fen, you had better do your research before abusing it.
Taking drugs is a personal choice and the responsibility lies with the user. The person that gave me the drugs is not responsible for my mistakes.
While we all would agree that it is a shame this person lost their life, we would also agree on the fact that he acted like an idiot.

Fentanyl can be an overwhelming high ( I got knocked to my knees by a 100mg patch) but there IS less euphoria than H or Opium or Dilaudid or.. It's strong, and really high doses have some weird effects:
1. You are not aware but you pass out standing up. I almost lost my job when I would be talking to someone and later they would tell me I suddenly stopped talking and then stared. Then started talking again.
2. I felt like I could not breath (respiratory depression) and would have to walk outside the house.
3. Curious speed buzz. Everything was one but that was a bad thing
4. Alcohol kills way more people than any dope in the world but that's legal.
5. The media sucks
